Cardinals Trounce Howard Payne, Sul Ross Lamar Tech gained undisputed lead of the LSC with a 99-78 triumph over Howard Payne University in McDonald Gym. The playmaking of guard Willie Williams and shooting of Richard Smith made up for the loss of James Barrum and the Howard Payne height advantage. Smith was high-point man with 27. The Yellow Jackets led 40-38 at halftime, but the Cards came back to tie it up 40-40. Lamar was tied 42-42 a moment later and then went on to build up a lead which it never relinquished. The Yel- low jackets went into a stall in the final minutes to prevent Lamar from going over the 100 point mark. Coach Jack Martin cleared the Cardinal bench in the closing minutes of the game. Richard Smithis 24 points led the way as Lamar defeated Sul Ross 89-73 at McDonald Gym. The Cardinal bench was cleared early in the first half and Lamar led 48-30 at the half-way point. Other Redbirds scoring in double figures were Weldon Higgin- botham with 13, Larry Augsburger, Wesley Newman and Willie Williams, 11 each, and Carrol Aulbaugh, making his first start for Lamar, with 10. l Cardinals Continue LSC Win Streak l Lamar Tech rallied three times to nip the Sam Houston State Bear- kats at Huntsville, 66-63. The Cardinals were down 30-28 at halftime and the lead changed hands six times before the Redbirds emerged on top to stay. James Barrum returned to action at the halfwav mark in the first half for his first appearance in several weeks due to a leg injury. He made up for lost time by scoring 19 points. This was I.amar's sixth straight LSC win. An easy 85-64 victory over the East Texas State Lions was won by Lamar Tech in NIeDonald Cym. Lamar closed out the first half with a 41-25 edge over the Lions. Richard Smith led the Cardinals with 20 points followed by Jerry Parker with 15. Fighting off a full court press, Lamar Tech took a 72-63 win over the Southwest Texas State Bobcats in Nfclionald Cym. The outside shooting of guards james Barrum and Willie Williams saved the das for the Cardinals. Lamar led 39-27 at intermission, but the Bobcats came back with a tight press to hold the Cards scoreless for the first three minutes of the final half.
