Cardinals Defeat Middle Tennessee, 2I-I4, in Tangerine Bowl The Tangerine Bowl clash at Orlando, Fla. was one of the most exciting events in Lamar Tech's history For the coaches and the team it was the reward for an outstanding season's work. Their opponents, the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raid- ers brou ht t l f ' ' ' ' , g 0 tie Bowl a team similar to Lamar in style and record, young and fast, the Raiders showed only two defeats on their season slate. A come-from-behi d n team, the Raiders finished second in the Tennessee Valley Conference. The Cardinals' first quarter touchdown was made by quarterback Win Hebert in a sparkling 52 yard sprint. Lamar's next tally was, to say the least, a bit unusual. The Card d f ' ' s rose from their own 17 to the Raider 2. Here the Redbirds received one of their 13 penalties of the game, this time for a loss of 18 yards. Coupled with an incomplete pass, Lamar was left in a fourth down situation. A field goal attempt was short but the ball was still rolling inside the field of play when a guard for Middle Tennessee kicked the ball over the goal line. Both teams rallied in the last period, but Lamar TeCh sewed up the game with a pass from Hebert to end Armour McManus. Walter Smith added the extra point for a perfeCf night. Thus, paced by fullback Ralph Stone and Win Hebert, Lamar Tech officially came of age as a four-year institution by winning the 15th annual Tangerine Bowl. Sophomore fullback Ralph Stone was the Redbirds, lead- ing rusher and a terror on defense. For his outstanding play' mg, the Beaumonter was voted the most valuable player ill the game.
