The accurate arm of Windell Hebert served up the initial score in the second period as he located end Armour McManus in the end zone 25 yards away. Walter Smith converted and Lamar led 7-0 at the half. In the third period East Texas used a mixed attack to drive to the Cardinal four where their fine fullback, joe Bob White, carried over. Late in the same quarter, the Cards scored the winning touchdown when fullback Barry Kerr, leading rusher for the night, dived in from the one. The loss, coupled with an earlier tie, dimmed Lamar's title hopes. ASLI dominated the first quarter and reached the Redbird I0 yard line before Sid Blanks was jarred loose from the ball and Malcolm McKay recovered for Tech. An A811 touchdown was erased in the second period when the Javelinas were judged guilty of an illegal use of hands penalty. The Cardinals scored in the second quarter and led 7-0 at halftime. The Javelinas came roaring back in the third period for a touchdown and then went for two extra points which proved to be the winning margin. A Lamar field goal attempt by Walter Smith was blocked as time ran out and ASLI had its victory. Pat Day, Lamar,s defensive quarterback and punter, sustained an injury in the game and saw limited service for the remainder of the season. DAVID WEBB ,,.. Sam Houston Downs Cards,9-7 Playing as though the conference championship were at stake, the Cardi- nals gave Sam Houston its sternest test of the year before finally bowing, 9-7. The Redbirds had the medicine for the Bearkats' air and ground games but lacked a remedy for the kicking fortunes of Sam Houston quarterback Calvin Pope. The conferenceis leading scorer, Pope kicked as he never had before, boot- ing in goals from the 36, 33, and 21 yard- lines. To set up the efforts, the Bearkats called on their talented backfield which rolled up 206 yards in the process. Behind 9-0 in the waning minutes, the determined Tech squad organized its forces and moved on its toughest march of the season. Taking possession on their own 6, the Cardinals used 22 plays in grinding 94 yards to their touchdown. Ralph Stone smashed over to climax the march and Walter Smith converted to finish the afternoon's scoring. g 15' JIM BRAD DERRICK RICHARD LEGATE Tockle-lVL-Senior Tackle-FL-Freshman if ,Q Y ' - -1 3 , l Af! ln f Ji '13 KENNETH CONES fs 1, .. fy -51s1 4i' y GERALD HAGAN Guard-FL-Freshman A- ,4 ' ,Q-s 1 2 ,V!,V,, , , lfygv B y , JONNY DANSBY Tackle--FL-Freshman Guard-FL-Freshman
