The loss, coupled with an earlier tie, dimmed Lamar's title hopes. ASLI dominated the first quarter and reached the Redbird I0 yard line before Sid Blanks was jarred loose from the ball and Malcolm McKay recovered for Tech. An A811 touchdown was erased in the second period when the Javelinas were judged guilty of an illegal use of hands penalty. The Cardinals scored in the second quarter and led 7-0 at halftime. The Javelinas came roaring back in the third period for a touchdown and then went for two extra points which proved to be the winning margin. A Lamar field goal attempt by Walter Smith was blocked as time ran out and ASLI had its victory. Pat Day, Lamar,s defensive quarterback and punter, sustained an injury in the game and saw limited service for the remainder of the season. DAVID WEBB ,,.. Freshman Bill lYorsham set up the run when he red-dogged a jacket passer at the Howard Payne 12 and came up with a fumble. Hobby jancik tallied the fourth TD as he left four defenders on the turf in circling left end from 10 yards out. Lamar's second unit, Red 2, was never more impressive, especially toward the end of the game when they marched 65 yards to retaliate against the final Howard Payne score. Instrumental in the drive was the passing and field generalship of quarterback Ronnie Wright and the twisting runs of halfback Bruce Land. The key play was Don Phillips' diving catch at the two-yard line. Wright went in for the score as time ran out. The victory kept Lamar within reach of Sam Houston which continued to lead the conference with an unhlemished record.
