Austin, 34-22 The Lamar Tech Cardinals continued to roll merrily along, trimming their first conference foe, Stephen F, Austin, 34-22. Playing before a home crowd of 8,50tl, the Birds relied on their running game to defeat the stubborn Axemen. Trailing 0-7 in the first quarter, the Cardinals came back to tie the score with a 67 yard march climaxed by fullback Ralph Stoneis one-yard smash. Bobby Jancik then came in to lift the Cards into a 21-14 halftime lead, jancikis first score came as he gathered in an SFA punt on their own 47 yard line and dashed to pay dirt in a brilliant scoring maneuver. Minutes later, he returned another punt 41 yards to the Jack 10. Un the next play, he charged in from the 8 to score. A successful 80 yard march provided the Cards with their fourth touchdown of the night. A 17 yard strike from Hebert to McManus was the fatal blow. Fighting back gamely, the Lumberjacks shook loose Jimmy Clark for an 84 yard touchdown ramble. lVith seconds left, the Jacks took possession deep in their territory and began heaving the ball in a desperate attempt to score. H Fullback Ralph Stone paced the Redbirds, scoring twice and gain- ing 71 yards on 17 carries. Bobby Jancik tallied once and Ken McRill and Harold Mayo caught touchdown passes. Walter Smith booted four of five extra points for the Cards. The first time the Redbirds got their hands on the ball, they began a drive which ended in a touchdown. Techis second TD came as a result of an intercepted Lobo pass which ended a Sul Ross drive decp in Cardinal territory. Using only eight plays, the Redbirds scored again. Three more touchdowns were picked up by the Cardinals in the second half. Stone scored in the third quarter. Mayo went over for the Cardinals' final tally as time ran out. sito N, X.
