In balancing a paltry defensive effort with a flashy run- ning and passing attack, the Redbirds set a pattern for later performances. A Lamar freshman, Walter Smith, surprised Cardinal fans by kicking a 30 yard field goal for the season's first tally. Other Cardinals scoring in the initial half were All-America candidate Bobby .Iancik and Ralph Stone. Leading 17-14 going into the third period, the Birds increased their lead to 10 points as Ronnie Fontenot skirted end from 8 yards out. This seemed to ignite the visitors. With quarterback Ron Myrickis passing heading the assault, the Indians parlayed Cardinal miscues into three fast touchdowns before dazed Redbird fans. Rising to the occasion, the Cards took the ball after an ensuing kick-off and set the Hebert-Jancik combo to work. Hebert wasted only one play before connecting on a beautifully executed 64 yard touchdown aerial to Jancik. Smith converted and the Birds trailed by only three points, 34-31. Less than three minutes showed on the Greenie Stadium scoreboard when the Cardinals received their final chance. Taking the ball on its own 43, Tech tr' d t ' U ' ' ie wo running plays and on a third and one situation, Hebert re- treated and tossed another perfect pass to Jancik to clinch the contest.
