' ' ' l Lamar Teclfs undefeated 1960 Tennis team included, left to right, Rudy Hernando, Jim Tattersall, Warren Jacques, Robin Spengler, Reginald Bennett, Al Driscole, Tim Heckler, Manuel Lopez, and Armando Ferla, AIAA LSCTENNIS CHAMPIO Lamar Tech's freshman and sophomore dominated ten- nis team of 1960 could make a well justified claim to best in the country in 1960. Undefeated in 15 dual meets, the Cardinal netmen went on to capture their ninth straight Lone Star Conference and sixth consecutive National Association of lntercollegiate Athletics crowns. The Redbirds counted among their victims such peren- nial net powers as the University of California, UCLA, Stanford, Southern California and Pan American College of Edinburg. Lamar Tech whipped the California quartet on their home grounds. The Birds became the first non-Cali- fornia team ever to beat Southern Cal at home. LT netters were unextendecl in 10 of their matches. The Bird doubles duo of Warren Iacques and Rudy Hernando bested Pan American's John Sharpe and Don Russell who last year won the NAIA doubles title. Lamar Tech had things all its own way at the LSC Con- ference meet in Nacogdoches. It was an all-Lamar finals in both singles and doubles with Jacques downing Reginald Bennett for the solo diadem and Iacques and l-lernando beating Bennett and lim Tattersall for the doubles crown. Rain in Kansas City marred the NAIA meet, resulting in a delay in the singles playoff and co-champions in the doubles with Sharpe and Russell of Pan Am sharing the title with Bennett and Tim Heckler. Hernando and Bennett were even at the end of two sets in the singles finals. 1-lernando copped the rubber set later in Beaumont. Individually, Lamar Tech netmen fared well. Heckler vvon the Junior Division crown in 1'louston's River Oaks Tournament and the Oklahoma Open and lrlernanclo an- nexed the title in both the Fort Wortli Invitational and Southwest Open in Little Rock, downing teammate Bennett in the finals of both meets. All but two members of the 1960 team, described hy Coach Lewis 1V1. I-lilley as the best he has ever handled, are due back next year. jacques, Hernando, Heckler, Tattersall and Robin Spengler were freshmen while Bennett, Al Dris- cole and Manuel Lopez were sophomores. Team captain Armando Perla, a senior, and Tattersall, who plans to transfer to Cambridge University in his native England, are the only losses. Both are seeded seventh.
