In between were some pretty respectable showings. The Cardinals as a team, failed to scratch in lifting the lid at Laredo's spectacular Olympics. Distance ace lan Cthat's Scottish for Johnl Stewart salvaged something by pacing the mile in 4113.7 to crack the College Division mark and equal the University Divi- sion record. The following week, the Redbirds made a respectable showing in Houston, placing third behind Texas and Rice in a four-way meet. At Huntsville the next week, Card cindermen swept a five- way meet and Stewart placed first in the 880, mile and two-mile runs. Lamar Tech repeated the victory at a triangular track meet here and came through again in a triangular meet at Natchitoches, but the Birds were virtually shut out in the Texas Relays and South- western Relays. The LT 440-yard relay team garnered a second in the Texas Relays for the only points. Leon Bryant's second in the 400-meter hurdles and a scattering of thirds and fourths crowned Lamar's ef- forts in the Southwestern Relays. A triangular meet scheduled here between the Cardinals, Texas Aggies and Northwestern Louisiana was rained out. The Birds placed second in the Northwestern Relays and handily won a triangular meet at Nacogdoches to set the stage for the Lone Star Conference championships, also at Nacogdoches. But Lamar Tech wound up fourth, a point and a half behind third place Texas A8zI and 32W points in the wake of champion East Texas. This gave the Birds four wins and a third place in smaller meets and a second and a fourth in the only large meets in which they placed. Stewart, in addition to his mile record in the Border Olympics established a new two-mile mark of 9:4l.5 in the LSC meet. Other consistent point-getters for the Birds were sprinters Jimmy Davis, Garth Heitshusen, and Jerry Dunn, distance runner Simon McNamee, hurdlers Sonny Jolly and Bryant, weightmen John Butler and Jim Landrum, high jumpers Bobby Jancik, Jack Steele and Her- shel Edwin.
