Lamar Tech's 1959-60 Basketball team included Danny Shaddock, manager, Jerry Cammack, Charles Anderson, Larry Ainsworth, Roy Meneses, James Barrum, Jimmy I-laugland, Larry Lopez, Cuy Davis, James Mellard, Herman Matt- hews, Wayne Aaron, Larry Augsburger, Jerry Trotman, Bob Shepherd, Johnny Flowers, Royce McCain, Johnny Johnston, Dale Godfrey, and Coach Jack Martin. JACK MARTIN Basketball Coach 13 ASKETBALL Eight field goals separated Lamar Tech from an untarnishecl Lone Star Conference basketball record and the crown during the 1959-60 season, but the Cardinal basketeers still had much to crow about. They finished second in the LSC race with an 11-3 won-lost record, compiled a respectable 18-9 season mark, successfully defended their title in the Monroe, La., Christ- mas Tournament and came within a couple of points of perhaps capturing the National Collegiate Athletic Association CNCAAD Southwest Regional crown on first try. Lamar Tech became affiliated with the NCAA on January 5, 1960. Loss of center Johnny Johnston, Grfoot-6 center, for the last half of the conference campaign probably badly damaged title chances. Johnston, who was sidelined first with a sprained ankle and later with flu, was the team's leading scorer for the past two years. Another high point in the chase was a 66-63 victory over Southwest Texas which snapped a 40-game home victory skein for the national champion Bobcats. Lamar Tech, without the services of Johnston, lost to Southwest Texas here by 55-53 after having dropped a 62-59 overtime decision to Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. The other LSC defeat was to Sam l-louston, 63-53. The Redbirds bowed to Northeast Missouri 82-81 in the first round of the NCAA tourney and then crushed Colorado College 88-67 to capture third place. Lamar Tech's schedule was a challenging one, including such strong foes as Memphis State and Mississippi Southern. The 1960-61 card promises to be even more demanding. Such perennial cage powers as Dayton University and VVestern Kentucky have been added along with always potent University of J-louston and highly respected Rice Uni- versity. The Cardinals' Bob Shepherd made the All-LSC team for a second time last season.
