Echo- ing with enthusiastic shouts of spirited footballers early in September, the campus finds its magnitude of activity is carried through the winter with the continual pounding of the basketball backboards and on into the sunny spring when participants of track, swim- ming, and baseball begin to limber up sore muscles. Standing: J. B. Millsap, Don Longcope, and Harold FRED PEPPER Head Coach Johnson. The chief reason for Lamar's having excelled in every sport in which it has engaged rests firmly on the shoulders of the Redskins' well co-ordinated coaching staff. lt is an estab- lished fact that Lamar is blessed with one of the finest coaching staffs in the State of Texas. The 1954 Lamar staff is led by Fred Pepper, whose energy, popularity, and ability in his first year as head coach have shown him to be a great leader. Backing Mr. Pepper in their various fields are Don Longcope, head basketball and golf coach, Bert Kivell, head track and assistant football coach, Coy Stewart, baseball and B team football coach, Harold Johnson, B team football and assistant track coach, J. B. Millsap, B team basketball coach, and new- comer Ray Corder, swimming coach. 100 The spirit of a school as well as that of a team depends largely on a very few and yet very important individuals. These students are the little thought of, however, much looked at cheerleaders, who this year have done an excellent iob in arousing the tremendous spirit of all Lamar students. Lamar proudly presents her fine crew of ambitious and hardworking cheerleaders in Harvin Moore and Fran Morye, Johnny Brown and Fay Veyon, Garrett Tucker and Shirley Zapp, and alter- nates, Jim Gallagher and Suzanne Summers. Whether win, lose, or draw, their support has been admirable, and we extend our heartiest congratulations for a wonderful iob and a wonderful year. Led by such All-City First stringers as Bobby Stillwell, Hart Peebles, Ed Shipe, Preston Weatherred, and Robert Blaine, the Redskins maintained a high state ranking the entire season and showed the same fighting spirit characteristic of all pre- vious Lamar teams. The fact that all four of Lamar's defeats were lost by a total of only five points must not be ignored. Mr. Fred Pepper, in his first year as head Redskin Football mentor, has shown tremendous promise of powerful State Championship football teams in the near future. An able staff, composed of students from iournalism classes, who have shown an interest in the writing field or who have done outstanding work, puts out this bi-monthly paper. The stu- dents will agree that the Lancer staff's aim, to inform students of school activities, to pro- mote support of all community functions, and to entertain while educating, is accomplished. The routine of working on the Lancer includes all phases of newspaper work. Such as: re- porting, typing copy, making-up pages, photographing, copy-reading and, last of all, proofreading. Lamcr's Library At Any stu d e nt in Lamar will readily agree that our library is essential to school life, for it is here that the necessary material needed in the varied studies can be found. The library is under the direction of Mrs. Edith Cox and Mrs. Josephine Gallagher, and they are assisted by student workers in the endless filing and cataloging. Our library consists of over eleven thousand books and extensive bound and un- bound periodicals. The Fenwick White collection, consisting of rare books, limited editions, and other valuable volumes, is a source of pride. The library derives much of its support from the student contributions during Book Week and from the numerous donations made by the scl'1ool's clubs. The library staff is in charge of the second floor exhibit case, and there is always a colorful and in- teresting display appropriate for the season or the coming holiday.
