The staff designed, drew, cut, photographed, agreed, and disagreed, and finally produced with a sigh the tenth Orenda. We hope that this book will serve to record for you your years at Lamar, which will soon merge in your memory into one day-the happiest day ever spent. Find so, to the students of Lamarfto you individually and to your futures collectively-We dedicate proudly the 1948 Orenda. Q Q-gunman cjbagdo Sri FAEULTY CLASSES HUNUHELUBS PUHLHUUIUNS STUUY'ELUBS . la The largest part of our day at Lamar is consumed in gaining knowledge. The hours we have spent in the classrooms and the associations we have made there will undoubtedly be the basis for our cultural and intellectual life. 14 Wedaage Lam mr. maya LHMFNTS PHlNClPQL They tell us that in the lndian tongue Orenda means The Great Spirit I like to think of it also as meaning our Recording Plngel, for on its pages ol White are chronicled the events of the passing years. From its pages peep the 'faces of those, our friends, our associates, and our teachers, whom relentless Time shall all too soon consign to the realm of memory and the land of used to be. ln the years to come, our Orendas will serve to keep alive memories of our achievements, our triumphs, our good times, and all that goes to make the years of high school both pleasant and profitable. The members serve for an entire school year, which is always a busy round of publishing and selling the school directory, selling Coronet magazines, conducting elections, collecting subscriptions for the Orenda, and furnishing the school with scholars ship merit awards which are presented twice a year to students with all Pl averages. Besides these indispensable services to the schoolj they contribute annually to the Community Chest, Red Cross, and Book Week. We tum now to a proper balance of recreaiion, because in the outside life of a school is the underlying spirit for which it is remembered. .Sgoorb in euiew Lamar has triumphed again in the field of sports! For the second consecutive year the Bedskin football squad captured the District l3-HH Championship and produced one of the finest teams ever to play in the Bi-District tilt. Not only was the line recognized as the best in this vicinity, but the backfield was one of the fastest and smartest combinations ever fielded by any high school. Three of Lamar's players, Doyle Beard, Bill Davis, and Iim Bolton, were chosen on the all-district team. Hmong the other men, Lamar students and rooters will not soon forget such Redskins as Perryman Collins, George Pontikes, Marvin Dur- renberger, Wayne Scherwitz, Gerry King, Sammy Hamilton, fake King, Ray Bright, Bay Winters, and Bill Chanslor. Plt the end of the season, Doyle Beard was given the Most Valuable Player Flward, and Perryman Collins was voted an award for outstanding sportsmanship. Hs the basketball season closed, Lamar finished third in district competition, but more than once the league leaders had to come from behind to nip the Bedskins in the closing minutes of the game. Many thrilling battles were pro- duced during the season, and Lamar participated in more than her share of them. Stalwarts of the team were Earl Bellamy, Bob Church, Larry Walton, George Pontikes, and Doyle Beard, while Sam Croom, Lewis Mattingly, Tommy Brunson, Marvin Durrenberger, and Sammy Hamilton proved to be capable reserves. Pls the Orenda goes to press, it is still too early to speculate on the outcome of Lamar's entrance into spring sports. However, we expect our track team to excel, and to be sparked by such athletes as David Knox, I. K. King, Bay Bright, Tommy Graham, Buddy Truitt, Bill Fagan, and Tim Gentry. Harry Webb, Tommy Browder, Bobby Brodnax, and Dudley Epps should prove invaluable as swim- mers, and the golf, tennis, and baseball teams are in fine shape for a successful season. May the Orenda give commendation to the boys who have again placed Lamar in a coveted position on the athletic map! Here are three of Lamar's coaches: Coach Bob Schulze, Coach Donald Longcope, Coach Fred Pepper. f Calofainq Cjlzeeraaclem cigar! fhe way '1'1If' 19411 C11111-11'w1111'11.: 11-1111111 111101 111111 pup 10 1.4111141112 m1111f111r' .1fw1::o11 Sf-1111 .:1r1111.1111q mbovw mv Ollkllflily S11l!11'Y 12-1wn1w1:: 111111 Ioyvw Frmwnvr 1111141111111 C11111w 1711 1'11111111111 11111 1?+111m11y 11wm1 c111w11m1-1011 111111 1011 1'111C11f'0v1c KIlY'Q?11HO 1110 p1ry11y Carolyn Tllfww kmygz 11111 LA111111' 11110111111 FI ::11c'ro:a::f111 f11111w11C YOCII' On 111111-N11 mv 1fr'1r1 13-1111111151 :1nf1 Bob Churr. , 11w111111111:: of 1111- 111111146-1111111 1WF1I11 S1c'1r1+1ir1q on 11111 ric1111P11'Q B111 1jC1V1.3f'IT'l1'1 150y11'1 Beard who WMC ro-Cr1p1C1ir1:2 1 11115 1'11c1111p1o11 1001111111 ::q11m'1 4 5 1 , '5 A 2 1 1 1 1 5 1 f , 11 14 1 1 119 ,kcfl 'V .Uk , ' rf x 5 , -4' yu -sf fs ' Xfsfwfr X' sz, fi-,Z -, -.t Q + ,. ,- , Q , I .. .. Besides the at'ain ment of the District l3fQQ crown, the year brought important changes in the coaching staff During the fall semester, Hal Mickelson and Stoop Dickson coached the Pl squad and fohn Vaughn coached the B team, fanuary brought the resignation of all of them. Hs a result, Fred Pepper and Bob Schultz came to Lamar to fill the vacant places. Thus the many Lamar victor- ies were farewell gifts to the departing coaches and welcome presents to the new ones, When recalling the season of '47-'48, fans will remember the muddy fields, the unusual :spirit in the stands, and the extreme versatility ofthe players. They will recall the blocked punt in the Davis game, the elation after Lamar tied Reagan, and the heartbreak when we finally lost to Goose Creek. These moments typified the football year.
