Originally from Abilene, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas and did graduate work at the Universty of Chicago, Univer- sity of Wisconsin, Columbia, and the University of Houston. He taught four years at Allen Academy in Bryan and four at Marshall Training School in San Antonio, where he was co-principal for two years. Mr. Moyes came to Houston to teach Latin and English lhe was chairman of the English department! for seven years at South End High School. Moving then to Central High, he served a half-term as assistant principal before becoming principal of Central in the fall of l923. lt may be news to many Lamar students that while Mr. Moyes was making a name for himself in the academic field, he also chalked up some fine athletic records, During his ten years as track coach at Allen and at Marshall, his teams won eight state championships and were twice runners-up. He coached seven seasons of track and football at South End High School. After fourteen years' service as prin- cipal of Central-later Sam Houston- Mr. Moyes became the first principal of the newly-built Lamar High School in the fall of l937. W. E.
