MOYES Principal A CENTLEMAN WITH A VARIED PAST. . . . is Lamar's principal, Mr. W. J. Moyes. Originally from Abilene, Texas, he graduated from the University of Texas and did graduate work at the Universty of Chicago, Univer- sity of Wisconsin, Columbia, and the University of Houston. He taught four years at Allen Academy in Bryan and four at Marshall Training School in San Antonio, where he was co-principal for two years. Mr. Moyes came to Houston to teach Latin and English lhe was chairman of the English department! for seven years at South End High School. Moving then to Central High, he served a half-term as assistant principal before becoming principal of Central in the fall of l923. lt may be news to many Lamar students that while Mr. Moyes was making a name for himself in the academic field, he also chalked up some fine athletic records, During his ten years as track coach at Allen and at Marshall, his teams won eight state championships and were twice runners-up. He coached seven seasons of track and football at South End High School. After fourteen years' service as prin- cipal of Central-later Sam Houston- Mr. Moyes became the first principal of the newly-built Lamar High School in the fall of l937. W. E. MORELAND: Superintendent of Schools JESSE MADDEN Assistant Principal E KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT . . . . when he impresses on Lamar boys the importance of an education: for Lamar's as- sistant principal, Mr. Jesse Madden, learned the hard way. He left high school to work on a rice plantation and in the oil fields. When he lost all his savings on a wildcat well, he came back to graduate from high school at the age of twenty-one. Mr. Madden entered Rice Institute in Fall, l923. He was a member of Rice's football, track, and cross-country teams. After gradsiating in l9Z7, he worked in a Port Arthur oil refinery until his desire to teach became a reality and he began work at Lanier Junior High School in February, l928. He left Lanier in the fall of l935 to Coach football and teach biology at San Jacinto from l935 to l94l. Meanwhile, in i938-l939, he completed his master's degree at the University of X ,S Houston. He became assistant principal at Bur- bank High School in l94l, and soon be- came acting principal .when Burbank's principal entered the army. Mr. Madden has been at Lamar since the fall of I9-45. He immediately be- came popular with the students, who never wait to be hauled into his office for punishment, but just drop in to visitl J. O. WEBB: Assistant Superintendent KW ' A lg32S,,hih,ll..' rm W r 1 Miss RUTH TA OFFICE The heart of Lamar is of course the office on the second floor, and the four ladies whose pictures you see on these pages help keep that heart a smoothly-beating one. Just outside the office of Mr. Moyes is Miss Ruth Taylor's desk. Over it and into her hands comes a steady stream of work. Her biggest job is as Mr. Moyes's secretary, but that is only the beginning. After attending to Mr. Moyes's correspondence, Miss Taylor takes care of secretarial work for the teachers, secures substitute teachers, looks after keys and supplies, and supervises the student cashiers in the lunchroom. Across from Miss Taylor sits Mrs. Edith Ferrell, the school's registrar, whose files contain the grades of all Lamar students. Mrs. Ferrell also interviews parents and students about courses, and enrolls new fiygr students. lt is herjob to mail transcripts of W V MRS. EDITH FERRELL MRS, ALICE HARRELL STAFF scholastic records to colleges, to check eligibility for sports, and to rank the Senior class. Mrs. Alice Harrell is Lamar's treasurer and bookkeeper. Clerical work is her specialty. She moved recently from the office she shared with Mrs. Leavell into the center office to help Miss Taylor and Mrs. Ferrell. Lamar's dean, Mrs. Selden Leavell, handles discipline problems. The supervision of girls and of school attendance are her major duties, but she also finds time to manage the book room. Miss Taylor, Mrs. Ferrell, Mrs. Harrell, and Mrs. Leavell are helped by a busy group of office assistants, who collect attendance slips from the rooms each period, take phone calls, and deliver messages. For in order to become a member, a senior must have a grade average ot 4,6 and a record of service to the school. The clubls first act last tall was to elect officers to serve during this year. They are Walter Clemons, president, Al- fred David, vice-president, Bertha Gray, secretary, Tim Weakley, treasurer, and Mary Alice Sanders, attendance clerk. When Alfred David graduated in Feb- ruary, Charles Wolf was elected vice- president in his place. Arrowhead is spon- sored by Miss Nell Morris and Miss Drew Black Staggs. In order to raise money to give a gilt to the school when they graduate, the members of the club sold stickers, book covers, and pencils emblazoned with the red and blue of Lamar, Arrowhead also presents displays in the museum case which last year's members presented to the school library. Climax of the year is the presentation on Class Night ot a cup to the most valuable Arrowhead member. This cup was last year awarded to Ann Poyner. In February, four new members, net pictured on this page, were taken into Arrowhead. They are Finis Cowan, Don- ald Eddy, Betsy Ferguson, and Geraldine Smith. LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL HOUSTON, TEXAS SPRING i947 Spring President In l922, the National Honor Society established a chapter and adopted an emblem. There are today in American high schools over 2000 chapters with an enrollment of over 250,000 members. The object of the Lamar chapter is to create an enthusiasm for schofarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the develop- ment of character. Also on hand to help him select that certain book are Mrs. Edith Cox and Mrs. Mabel Orman our librarians Mrs Cox and Mrs Orman are aided by a staff of l brary student assistants who devote one period a day and time after school to the library. Co-chairmen of the staff are Hubert Mills and Patti Purser who have both worked in the library for three years The long sun filled room contains more than books One growing asset of the library is its collection of phonograph records, begun last year, The P.T.A. donated a record player, so that now English students can hear Shakespeare read by fine actors MRS. THE LAMAR LIBRARY In the museum case which Arrowhead presented to the library last year, interesting exhibits may always be found. This year the case has been filled with Christmas books, rare books, a Roosevelt display, army insignia, stamps, an exhibit based on The House of the Seven Gables, antique cups and saucers, and a costume display of little girl's dress worn during the period of l85O-l86O. Mrs. John F. Dickson, who last year gave the library a rare book on the history of cos- tumes, gave this Christmas a book on South American dress. Mrs. Dickson also contrib- uted to the Fenwick White Shelf, commemorating the president of Lamar's first senior class. So it might be said that a student at Lamar really has more than the ten thousand advantages mentioned at the beginning. MRS. EDITH Y. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Lamar Chapter of the Junior Red Cross was born in I943, when the whole school was doing its best to aid the war effort. The chapter was organized to help in the wartime program of the National Junior Red Cross. Through the efforts of the Lamar chapter, the art and home economics classes, and the student body, much has been accomplished. The art classes designed menus and tray covers, made posters and wall decorations. The Home Economics department co-operated by making such things as bed jackets for wounded servicemen in hospitals. The student body and the various school clubs filled gift boxes for the needy children of Europe. The officers of the Junior Red Cross are Charles Wolf, president, Louise Baker, vice- president, Olwyn Davies, secretary, and Martha Eubank, treasurer. Mrs. Eleanor Huddles- ton is sponsor. Founded by Mrs. Ula Hennes during Lamar's first year, the club devotes itself to spreading interest in drama. Originally limited to those students who studied drama or speech, Kachina's membership has now been broadened to include all those at Lamar who are interested in the theatre. The club has helped develop the talents of many young actors and actresses who have done fine work in the Houston Little Theatre and the Community Players. At least two girls who were once members of the club have gone on to become actresses in Hollywood. ln order to obtain school credit in drama, Kachina members present scenes from plays At left, Pat Hindricksori applies make-up to Mary Sue Sheffield. Kachina has always made an admirable showing at the state lnterscholastic League One-Act Play contest. The club's first soc'al event was a dance lrefore Christmas called the Yuletide Yump, which put Lamarites in a holiday frame of mind. But the biggest social event was the Pow Wow formal, February Zl, l947, at River Oaks Country Club. Here a bouquet of gladiolas was presented to Susie Gilbert, who was chosen the club's pin-up girl, and Mr. Bailey was presented with a gift for thoughtful work with Pow Wow. New members of the club were installed at the home of Hampton Oliver. They were Gordon Day, Troy Whitehurst, Kenneth Lewi, Marlin Cruse. Row Six. Sergeant Daniel and Captain Bill Smith, who sponsor the club, help the boys carry out this purpose. It is customary, instead of electing officers, to have the highest ranking members of the R.O.T.C. act as heads of the Officers' Club. Thus, Richard Leach is the club's president this year, W. A. DIST lCTl3AA Head Coach Edward Duggan's career ended in a blaze of glory in his last year as head coach of the Lamar football team. His team had gone to the quarter-finals of the State Tournament undefeated, conquering all in its path, through a glorious season of football, but it finally lost in a heartbreaker to Thomas Jefferson of San Antonio. Led by a strong line, which boasted three all-district men lWillard Rhynes, Bill Repass, and Gordon Whitel and a brilliant backfield of two all-district men lRobert Smith and John Champion? it crushed everything that came along. Whenever the chips were down, our boys would al- ways seem to come through. The season started with Lake Charles, Louisiana, the victim 25-O. On the second play Robert Smith bulled his way 80 yards for a touchdown. Next, Port Arthur was stomped l4- 7. Then Mexico City was entertained with a 27-O setback. Hardworking managers this year were Phil Brochstein, Bob Wills and Gene Hamilton, At right, Juanie Champion goes over for a touchdown. Lamar's first string-ready for action. On the line are Mueller, Nowlin, Davis, Repass, Rhynes, White, Bolton. Backfield: Smith, J. King, Beard, Champion. 1946 CHAMPIONS The following week, with some of the starters absent, we outplayed Sunset of Dallas, and gained a 6-6 tie. The district race began the next week, with San Jacinto playing in- spired ball to come within 8 points of victory, nevertheless, Lamar won 20-12. After this, the other five members of the district were held scoreless. Sam Houston, Jefferson Davis, Reagan, Austin, and Milby, respectively, were downed. This ended our regular season, but the team had its eye on greener fields. The following week in the bi-district contest, we de- feated Pasadena 27-6. Cn a hot day in San Antonio the Redskins were upset for the first time by an evenly matched team that got the breaks. All in all, this was considered the greatest season a Lamar football team has ever had, and it certainly deserves the praise it received. B TEAM.
