Moyes. To him we look for guid- ance and fairness and he has not yet let us down. He offers friendship and thoughtful consideration to all students. He has won our admiration and loyalty. J. HERBERT WRIGHT Anixtant Principal fe 'I WILLIAM j. MOYES P rin ripal Mr. H. Wright, our assistant principal, performs his job well and commands respect from all who know him. He is interested in all student activities and works tirelessly to solve any problem that arises. TQYIOF Ferrell Miss Ruth Taylor, secretary, and Mrs. Edith Ferrell, registrar, in their own sweet and quiet way do their part in making the affairs of Lamar run smoothly. Leavell Wgfford Mrs. Selden Leavell, dean, and Mrs. Her- bert Wofford, attendance clerk, always friendly and efficient, do a little bit of every- thing to help everybody. Page Seven RECOLLECTIONS TEACHERS What won't they think of next? Now students can sit back and relax while Shakespeareis plays come forth on the Victrola! Miss Gehring and Wookie Sinclair hold an album of Macbeth records to show the pictures to an absorbed class before playing the recordings. Fascinated students watch with anticipation to see just what the out- come is going to be of the formula Mr. Bailey is ucookin' up in the Chemistry Laboratory. Mr. Edwards looks skeptical about the whole thing. Mathematicians Brinton and Porter try to figure out some Way to explain this theorem to their classes. The solution is really as easy as can be. Why, all you have to do is-. Mr. Keding, Lamar's dynamic music director, beats out on the key- board while Mary jo Little, Nina Urqubart, and Patsy Moellering form the admiring audience. He must really be solid from the gleam in Fred Bunde's eye. Miss MacMaster and Martha Hudson display one of the flags to be used on the Pan American Day Pageant to Misses Wilson, Morris, and Pleasants, the usenoritasi' of the school. When those four get together and start rattling out Spanish, it's as cosmopolitan as Mexico City. FOR OUR ALBUM STUDENTS Mrs. Hennes, the dramatics instructor, supervises the weekly News- cast as it is presented. Here Bert Kadell awaits the go signal from Tom Carter, managing the broadcasting mechanism. R. C. Butts quickly scans his lines for the last look before hc's Non . . . Wfhether in the 1890's or the l940's, there is always history! They who really know the history are the teachers of this subject here in Lamar. Mrs. Robb points out to the others some spot of interest on the map. Miss Bryan looks anxiously to see just what it is while Miss Eaves and Mrs. Rochefort gaze intently. Miss Wfeinberg turned her back to the camera to get a better look . . . Directing the boys on how to be ncater and more skillful craftsmen is Mr. Carr. With a twinkle in his eye, he takes time out in class to give 'em :i few pointers that lead to smoother lines-in woodwork! Standing fashionnbly is Eddie Jean Adkins, who has her hem straight- ened by Mrs. Sandel, Lamar's popular clothing teacher. Mrs. Longcope confers with jack Read and Bobby Ricks on her newest recipe for sho'ten- ing bread. Boys, that prune whip was divine-thanks to Mrs. L.! . . . Art for art's sake -and so it goes. With a speck of green, a dab of yellow, n bit of blue here, and a swish of red, they industriously go about their work. They can do the most amazing things with those funny little twists given to brush and pencil alike! Anah June, Lynwood, and Joyce watch Nancy, Mollie Claire, Joyce, and jackie, all of whom are pupils in Miss Mary jo White's classes. .lr ,pf I . -.,. S-x ,,. KN Bryan M , Howard President ......... Despite the return of only four veterans-Bunde, Russ, Duggan, and Miller-Coaches Duggan and Pasche fielded a spirited and Wellbal- anced team. Playing steady ball throughout the season, the Redskins lost many close games though outplaying the opponents. With nine lettermen returning, Lamar promises to have another topnotch team in the fall of '44. Although Lamar won three games' this year, her basketeers gave their usual gallery-pleasing performances. On account of the lack of height, the lack of experience, and the handicaps resulting from injuries, the team never seemed able to hit full stride. Captain Richard Berg, tree- top center, Connie Pontikes, long-shot artist, and hustling Jim Morgan were the stalwartsof the team. Rounding out the year's athletics with a bang, Lamar's track team is the best in the school's history. Coach Pasche has uncovered some re- markable talent in the persons of jack Nini, a very promising sprinter, Roswell King, ace high jumper, Settegast, Read, Gallie and Nini, who compose a fine sprint relay team. Placing a close fourth in the Houston Invitation Meet, Lamar is expected to be a strong contender for the district title. J ACK MARSHALL Page Fifty-Two COACHES Here are the chiefs of those fighting Redskin w a r rio r s. Mr. Edward Duggan, back- field coach and Mr. Alden P a s c h e, Lamar's new line coach. The Cherokee Club is a sports club whose membership is open to any girl in Lamar who participates in Cherokee sports tournaments. Tournaments in all sports on the following pages are held through- out the school year. The club elects one girl each year to head each sport and to supervise the tourna- ment of that sport. In this way the Cherokee Club develops leadership among its members. At the end of CHEROKEE CLUB Sponsors: Mrs. Mae Bourgeois Mrs. Opal Cowan Mrs. Helen Speer WALKER, Prrxizlmt each year bracelets are awarded to the three girls who hold the highest score records. Winners of the vari- ous tournaments are awarded letters. This year two new sports, bowl- ing and golf, were added to the Cherokee list and the sports heads were elected. However, since this was done so late in the year, organi- zation has been put off until next year. The two sports heads elected were Bettye Phillips and Earline Douglas. -il THOMSON, Vice-President BARNES, Srrrrfur ,K Page l-'iffy-Nine CHEROKEE CLUB ali' mini as 1. That was in grandpa's day-the time when there was no one swooner- crooner but a group of four with the famous-or was it notorious?- title of Barber-Shop Quartettef' ' Today in our school we have the Arrowhead Club. It is the ultimate goal by which a student may reach the highest scholastic honor in Lamar. Attaining this honor means days and weeks and months have been spent in worthwhile efforts. The qualincations are not only high averages, but also high ratings in leadership, cooperation, and loyalty. Every spring Arrowhead sponsors the May Fete of Lamar. Also it awards to the Arrowhead who has contributed more than anyone else toward maintaining Lamar's high ideals and standards, a loving cup which he may keep until school reopens in the fall. In '43 Evelyn Burke was chosen outstanding Arrowhead. Whether or not this explosive destruction of each other's manuscripts is responsible for any literary honors conferred on the members is hard to say, however, Sequoyha points with pride to Malcolm Herndon, Helen Chillman, Fance Frank, Clarence Lohman, Clarita Fonville, and Glen Brooks, Whose poems have Won places in the Texas High School Poetry Anthology, and to Helen Chillman and Marcia Weiss, who represented Lamar in the Interscholastic League Essay Con- test. Also, the club has compiled its own anthology to present to the school library, so that Lamar may gaze at the next generation of literary leaders and say, I remember, I remember. The club's purpose is to promote interest among the cadets, to make more efficient officers, and to maintain a high status in military discipline. Relieving the monotony of drills and parades, the annual ball is held for officers and their dates from every public high school in the city. This year the dance took place on January Z0 at the Arabia Temple. As a flash from a shining saber adds sparkle to a parade of cadets, so radiated the sponsors who increased interest with their appearance in all reviews. Dressed in real militar I st fle and tailorin 1, each irl marched 5 5 B 3 with the company to which she was chosen by the officer in charge. By their charm and vivacity girls played a large part in the elevation of the cadets' morale. The club elected no officers this year. Since it's customary for the cadet-officer of highest rank to act as president, Lyle Cashion, Lieutenant Colonel, filled this position. Noi in Pirllzrzw Ralph L. Atmar, james B. Belin, Louis R. That all work is not without reward is easily seen not only by the invaluable training the students receive but also by the credit they get which amounts to one-half a credit per two semesters and 30 points. This year for the first in the history of our family, the assistants bought pins which they showed off with much pride. What could be more fitting to single out these assistants than a tiny gold scroll and quill fastened together to make a mighty attractive pin that only these students are eligible to wear! Throughout the year she found many other things to be proud of such as the junior members being taken in with that beautiful ceremony, the selling of war bonds and stamps, the making of Christmas trees for the Red Cross, the selling of Christmas seals, and the planning of the Formal which was really something to shout about! Last of all she was proud of all her older sisters in the club to h w om she had to say good-bye. This, indeed, is Z1 year to add to the family album because it is worth remembering. They were in our first album back in '37, f ' and they're still carrying on with that well-known Chums enthusiasm. By contributing a year's subscription to the Heritage Press Books, E' Chums has proved to be a valuable asset to our family. The Christmas idea was truly displayed when the air was filled with V holiday spirit, the ornaments on a huge Christmas tree, which was later il' presented to the U. S. O., glittered in the glow of green, red, blue, and , ,sig yellow lights and added that certain tingle to the gaiety in the room. tr - : ,A Their formal was extraordinary and memorable. Already in its hardly begun career it has been organized twice, the first time in '41 by girls the same age who graduated last yearg the second by thirty-five of our cousins in the junior class of ,43. Niwauna, like the other clubs, donated its services by selling Christ- mas seals, making favors for soldiers at camps, and giving a party for the Mexican children at Hawthorne School. A young club with young ideas--and mighty good ones too-is the Niwauna. Valentine greetings delivered by the girls and the Four O'Clock Frolic, an afternoon dance, were two of their very novel inspirations. A noteworthy thing about the Seminars is their interest and cooper- ative UD attitude. Both characteristics are prerequisites for admission into the club. TAWASI Maybe it's the power of suggestion since Tawasi is the Indian word for friendship, but you'll not find a friendlier group of girls anywhere. Contrib- uting to charity, participating in all family activities in our big house of Lamar, and promoting social affairs are the principal interests of this club. Speaking of promoting social affairs, they can really put over a dance! To prove this, just ask any- one about the Pigskin Prom and the annual always- awaited Sweetheart Swing. Their formal at Christ- mas was a maze of lovely girlsfilovely dresses, and lovely decorations. The members are those inter- ested in discussing world events in round-table fashion. This club has done exceptionally good Work despite the fact that it was late in organizing. It supplied the Debate Team of Lamar for the Interscholastic League Meet, developed speech talent, and prepared students for other speech activities besides debate. Those who were on the team were Don Lasof and Jack Sams. The club has high hopes and expectations for next year and years to come. Judging by what has been done in the past, they will fulfill all of these. The officers are George McElvey, president, Jimmy Myers, vice- president, Frank Jungman, secretary-treasurer, James Wright, sergeant- at-arms. The promotion of brotherhood, the Indian meaning for Irari, is the main purpose of this organization. It also donates money and service to all worthy undertakings of Lamar. During the year the boys had a number of social activities on the calendar. They had that dance of dances, the hit of them all- The Farmers' Frolics! The members participated in the stage show. It seems Super-Ashbyl' and the Uke Boys brought down the house. Their formal was a gala occasion, and the installation of junior members at the sunrise service was a most impressive ceremony. P O W - W O W Another new-comer in our midst is this praise-worthy organiza- tion. Their principal purpose is to give aid to all benevolent causes whose drives are endorsed by Lamar, also to enrich the school library with Worthwhile reading material, and to promote wholesome social and recreational activities for club members and all of Lamar's family in general. Quite a big undertaking, dontcha think? Well, they,ve given us good reason to believe that they can do it even in their short existence. The giving of dances and engaging in sports are their chief activities and they really go all-out', for them. However, there's noth- ing backward about these boys. Although this club has been in existence only since November of 1943, the enterprising members have already sponsored several social events of note for Lamar's nieces and nephews. The Ramal trophy for the most out- standing junior boy or girl is to be awarded at the end of the school year. Members hope to make the presentation as well as the organization a permanent institution. Their admirable contributions to the Red Cross and to other causes have given them a trait of real generosity. The New Year had a real send-off with the flourishing Q'Ramal Rampagef, and their beautiful formal really gave the term a uwown ending. LOS HABLADORES Almost every American family has several kinds o' blood in its veins, and our Lamar family is not different. The Los Habladores Club is for our Spanish-speaking kinfolk. The club consists of fifty-two members interested in the Spanish language and in the work they are doing in regard to our South American neighbors. Among the things done by the club this year was the making of pinatas at Christmas to be sent to the Mexican children of Rusk Settle- ment. They also sent a Christmas box cointaining books, crayons, paper dolls and lots of other gadgets to an orphanage in Mexico. And more-they wrote and produced the Pan-American Day Pageant. They also presented us with a Pan-American flag that completed the set. They've been busy as can be this year and have set a new high in their record of activities. The officers: Clarita Fonville, president, Martha Hodson, vice- presidentg Ellen Hopkins, secretaryg Carl Hall, treasurer. The co-sponsors of this club are Miss Helen MacMaster and Miss Julia Pleasants. Page Om' H Il11l,I'f't1 Eigbf IXUH k 'fm K, Ai , K1 N.. V -5' V pl: V f .f :Q H Y g I x 1, . ., ,--I ,C .
