World o Tomorrow Stimulated by the prevalent theme of the WORLD OF TOMORROWV, the 1939 Orenda Staff deemed it pertinent to use in its art work the forward-looking note of TOMORROW. No better theme could they have chosen than: A happier way of living through a recognition of the interdependence of men, and the building of a better WORLD OF TO- MORROW' with the tools of today. Is it not true that we should focus our attention on the means of making the WORLD OF TOMORROW a better world than the world of today? As a means to this end, TOMORROW calls upon us to renew our faith in education. Back in 1890, the Student of the little red schoolhouse dreamed not of the consolidated school of today, nor did that Student who walked miles each day have any idea that in less than a quarter of a century students would ride to school in a new and shining school bus. Today American Education has a S10,000,000,000 plant, 1,500,000 employees, and a i52,500,000,000 budget. It ministers to 30,000,000 children. With these facts before us, the question may well be asked: Where do we go from here? The short answer is that the ends of education are to promote the ends of human life and of organized society. The ends of life and society are, in turn, individual happiness and the common good. The method of promoting them is to develop the moral character and the intellectual ability of the community. Today none of us knows a tenth of the things that are known. The thought of TO- MORROW' will set before us many ideas for our imaginations to incubate. Now, the wisest students are stuffed with bits and jumbles of ill-adjusted knowledge, but it is not too much to anticipate a far clearer-headed boy and girl in the schools of TOMORROW. The school of TOMORROW will certainly be a world of intercommunicating individuals. Today is almost 'TOMORROW' when it will be possible for teachers and pupils housed in buildings made of glass to sit in conference, seeing and hearing each other by radio, television, tele- phone, when, in fact, they are hundreds of miles apart. Methods will be designed to stimulate the minds of students and to promote and graduate students in terms of actual achievement rather than in terms of ability to master a teacher's habits. There are big changes ahead for education. The schools look forward to an amazing future. Today there is an excess of materials, an excess of money, and an excess of man power. That means there are not enough projects to work on. New fields must be entered, men canit go on doing the same things they are doing now. Students of today must realize that the whole field of knowledge and achievement is ahead of them. Fortunately, they haven't learned that things ean't be done. They aren't afraid of new ideas. The Orenda Staff, therefore, believes that the Students whose school history is re- corded in this volume will be able to meet the changes and difficulties of TOMORROW,S WORLD with a measure of equanimity, and courage, and with a capacity of self-discipline. Civilization is moving ahead and not even TOBIORROWV is the climax. it 2' i nm-.,.. gr-ww vw-un as--A H4 9 3 i I
