When Diane Thomas, a senior, was asked what could be done to promote more school spirit, she said, If students find an interest in coming to school or if students become involved more in the way school is operated, I feel school spirit would be given a big boost. In rating Lamar High School on a scale of 1-10. Diane rates it as 5 and rising. In a one-word description of the school. Diane says that the school is influential. She believes that it is an opportunity knocking at the door. Lamar High School can be described as a school of spirit, happiness, and experiences, according to senior. Dale Munn. He adds that the faculty and custodial staff are positive aspects at Lamar High.” In rating our school. Dale rates Lamar a 9. which means he thinks it is exceptional. What can be done to promote more school spirit? Have more pep rallies and more school activities. said Jamey Ard, a junior at LHS. Being a junior, Jamey feels great because he only has one year left. This idea was also shared by Sandra Jacobs. another junior at LHS. When asked how they felt about seniors being dismissed for lunch two minutes earlier than underclassmen. both seemed to hint that it was alright by them, because when they become seniors, they look forward to this. An average of eight was concluded when asked, on a scale of 1-10 how do you rate Lamar High? Describing LHS was also easy for Sandra, who in brief said, It's an Experience! If you could use one word to describe Lamar High School what would it be? Genovia Harell, a sophomore thought that the word intellectual would fit the bill. That is one of the many positive aspects of Lamar High School. Do you think this year will be a good year for you? Steven Morrell, also a sophomore, replied Yes, it's going to be 25% better than being a freshman. Members include homeroom representatives, class officers, and student council officers. These students attend regular meetings and sponsor acitivties. Some activities that have helped improve school spirit include selling LHS buttons, putting up bulletin boards, having a drop-in on parent-teacher conference day, and sponsoring spirit week and the homecoming parade. The Student Council members also have helped with activities to support the school. Its members exhibit qualities of leadership and caring. They are actively involved in their club, school, and community. The club sponsors several fund raisers. The money is then donated to various organizations. They sponsored the Miss LHS Pageant. The money raised from this was donated to the state-wide Special Olympics. For the past several years the Jr. Civitans have done a Walk-A-Thon in the spring. The funds raised from this are given to Leap-for Love then on to Special Olympics, a Jr. Civitan Scholarship, and Children’s Hospital of at Arms. Carla Jacobs. Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville. Members also get involved in service projects. They help in the consession stand at football games in the fall. CIVITAN 1 , « Beta Club “Higher Level Thinking The National Beta Club is a leadership service club. Its purpose is to encourage effort, to reward merit and to promote those qualities of character that make for good citizenship. The Beta Club meets on the first Wednesday in every month during lunch. Here they discuss projects that can be done. The department is made up of the marching band, flag girls, chorus, and pep band. This year the marching band performed several numbers including Ajtares, This Old Man, Walk Like an Egyptian, and Somewhere Out There. These were all crowd pleasers at football games. The members also took the show on the road and participated in a marching band competition in Florence. Several fund-raiser were undertaken by the group to earn money for new uniforms. 74 The chorus is an active musical group also. They get together to perform a Christmas concert and a spring program. On Monday, we had hat, shades, and tee-shirt day. On Tuesday, we had class day, each class was designated a certain role. The Seniors were famous people, the Juniors were bums, the Sophomores were cartoon characters, and the Freshmen were nerds. On Wednesday, we had support your team day. And Thursday was crazy day. The event was set in a patriotic theme, “We the People.” The contestants opened the show with a dance routine arranged by some of the Jr. Civitans. Then Dale Munn presented the emcee for the evening, the honorable Denny Neilson. The girls were judged in two categories, then the five semi-finalists were announced. The Senior Trip included going to Washington, D.C. and New York City. Many sights were seen such as the Smithsonian Institute and the FBI Building in Washington, D.C., and the Statue of Liberty in New York. The team came out with a 4 and 7 overall record for the season and a 3 and 2 conference record. They made it to the state play-offs, but were defeated in the first round by Central of Pageland in a very good game. We commend them for their earnest efforts throughout this season and hope they have gained the experience to go farther next year. 100 1. Keeping The Spirit LHS Cheerleaders The Lamar High School cheerleaders are a very spirited group of girls. They sponsored the Homecoming pep rally. Where Bernard Coe was crowned Homecoming King. This helped boost the spirits of the fans and players, the team had their first home victory that night. The cheerleaders attended a UCA cheerleading Camp at University of South Carolina during the summer. The camp really paid off, the girls brought home a superior trophy, several ribbons and a spirit stick. The girls played a 22 game season that opened with a win over East Clarendon. The boys worked hard and played a tough schedule. Ill SH.VER FOXES C I EICU Take It To The Limit Girls Track Lamar's girls track team completed their season with a 16-4 record under coaches Terry Styers and Randy LaCross. They became region champions for the ninth consecutive year and finished 4th in the state. On Tuesday, May 12, 1987, Teresa Brown was named most valuable player for the girls track team at the athletic awards banquet. Teresa also qualified for All-Conference along with Regina Hudson, Twannia Price, Deidre Mack, Alomie Moore, Loretta Hawkins, and Keidre Mack. Six of these young ladies went on to qualify for All-State. They were as follows: Twannia Price, Deidre Mack, Alomie Moore, Loretta Hawkins, Teresa Brown, and Regina Hudson. They brought six silver medals and one gold medal home with them. Twannia Price won two of the six silver medals in the 300 meter hurdles and the 1600 meter relay. The gold medal was captured by Regina Hudson, who set a new school record for the girls high jump with 5'4”. This performance allowed Regina to become South Carolina's nominee for All-American honors in the girls high jump. Running successfully on the mile, two mile, and the 800 yard run, Obey Martin went on to become the MVP for the boys track team on May 12, 1987 at the athletic banquet. Although our record was (6-8), our team continued to stick with the winning spirit which is well known throughout Lamar High School. Everyone played their best and gave their all. Coach Barbara McNamara coached her best and also stuck with the winning spirit. Even though we were tied for third place in the 4-AA conference, we did have two girls named to the All-Conference teams. These two girls were Tonya Price and Loretta Davis.
