We noticed a group of people standing around a flag drapped casket I remembered reading about an army sergeant killed while taking pictures in a restricted area in East Germany. While watching this I felt lucky to live in a country where brave people risk their lives so that our nation will stay free. Rob Fender 69 People think being in the band is easy, but it is not. Sometimes we have only two days to make up a new halftime show. Marching three or four miles in a parade and playing is not easy either. Sometimes we have to march In a Darlington parade and head straight for a contest in Hartsville. We have really Improved since last year winning two Trophies and a Superior ribbon. Sammie McCullough Mr. Dwight James Director Noises, sounds, students and director get set up. “1, 2, 3 and ...” Mr. James warms up the band. From that moment on. Lamar’s band works hard to live up to their good reputation. Kim Clark 70 Mr. James tells us that the drummers are the most important part of the band. Band ------ It Is Not Easy From hearing talk among band students, they enjoy the course. From the concerts to the parades, the excitement and adventure, Lamar works hard. They are very well respected among other bands, far and near. One of the best performances the band had was at Kellytown Stadium. We were thought to be one of the best bands there. We won a blue ribbon for SUPERIOR DRUM MAJOR and two trophies. It is not easy being in the band. To get where we are today took a lot of practice and determination. Susan Howell 3rd Place District Competition Typewriting I ROLL IT UP ... AND Take These Broken Wings And . . . 148 4s stare at Ronald McNair Walking to the pad, I realize the dignity He and others must have had. This man so brave, this mem so bold, They must have made this man Then broke the mold. Space travel, that ivas his love. Now he watches from ablve. Three! Two! One! Zero! He's off! — Space is his destination. At this point all of us are impatient. Eight miles up and eighteen down range The shuttle faces total rage. BOOM! In the aftermath of the tragedy Bits and pieces fell to earth. This tragedy ends the travel’s birth. I stand here watching the Challenger fall I am aghast, I don’t believe! No! Not at all! Robert Clark Man’s struggle to achieve wisdom is like the growth of the lotus plant. The journey begins as a seed buried in dark mud. Next comes the stem beginning its climb up through the wet depths. Finally the plant reaches the water and a beautiful blossom opens to the sun. — Johnny Lowry 'True courage comes in enduring persevering and believing in oneself.” Ron McNair of South Carnlin Learn To Fly Again TRIBUTE The way you died was courageous. You died while doing your duty, and fulfilling your dream. You knew the dangers of flying And yet you went. And would have gone again. Without you and people like you This would be no world. You’ve given hope and dreams To many young people who will someday Follow in your footsteps. While we held services in your honor You watched down on us from above. There soon will be others Who will fulfill your dreams. As well as theirs. In honor of you, astronauts. I stand up. Brantlee Thomas Ron McNair 1950 — As I watch you. Friend I hardly knew. You first appeared to be different. You appeared to be a monster. The wolf in sheep s clothing. Yet now, I see you are the same as I. You saved us all. And now your noble life is gone And no one thanks you. Chris Alexander 1986 Poetry Contributed by Jane Windham — 10th English — LHS Revving Up And Rolling Out REVVING UP AND ROLLING OUT Time is like a big wheel. The futher it rolls, the faster it gets. Each year has gotten a little bit faster. Last year was gone before I knew it. I hope the senior year goes even faster, because I can’t wait till I roll out of that parking lot for the last time. Scott Jeffords 150 Rising to the top, reaching for stars Hoping one day our lives will extend far. Our high school days, fast come to end It’s time to get out. Let our new lives begin. Jeryld Stevens Winning is something you do on your own with no help. It is fabulous to win in competition. When you win, you know you have achieved something you set out to do. That is what really counts. feel everyone who runs a race is a winner. They did not quit or give up, but kept going. Winning gives that energy inside to do it again. It gives an attitude of being able to do other things better. Hope Blanton Rolling Away! Seniors can relate to being on a roll. We are rolling on out of high school and on with our lives. It is exciting and scary at the same time. I guess it is a part of life to go our separate ways. I just hope it is also a part of life for the Class of 1986 to remain a class and friends. Lucia Griffin Working on ELIXIR '85 and '86 has given me a lot of pride. I will be able to look back in years to come and say helped do this book. It has been a pleasure knowing the students appreciate the annual. James Howell 152
