±184 ELIXIR 1984 Elixir Lamar High School Lamar, South Carolina I. Opening 2-16 II. Dedica tion 17 III. Activities 20-43 IV. Athletics 46-71 V. People 74-113 VI. Supporters 116-143 VII. Closing 144-151 VIII. Editor’s Closing 152 This year in Lamar when marUh °,S Conso1‘dated, it T .ked, milestone in our history! Many were afraid of the changes it would make, but as the year be-gen, our fears faded! Lamar High School has had a new beginning and things have turned out great! No longer do we think of each as cross town rivals but as LHS students. All struggling “to make it.” We've played and worked together, we’ve laughed at each others’ mistakes and we’ve made the best of the time spent inside these walls! I’m glad I was able to be here to experience the new beginning of Lamar High School!’’ Christal Clements 3 It has been the best of times, it has been the worst of times, it has been a time of learning, it has been a time of foolishness, it has been a year of change, it has been a year of stability, it has been a season of victories, it has been a season of defeats, it has been a spring of anticipation, it has been a winter of rejections. 4 0«TW MAYING NOM! '« ANEW BEGINNING I It has been a time of sacrifice and a time of addition. It has been an ending of rivalry and a beginning of friendship. It has been a new beginning where young men and women will explore life to the fullest, follow every desire, fight with all they have, for what they want. 5 h e summer of ’83 was a busy one. For many it was a time to forget about tests and homework and a time to stay out late and sleep till early noon. Unfortunately though, for others, the summer meant early mornings and long work hours. For the remaining of our students, it was a season of just having fun! Swimming, fishing, playing baseball, and going to the beach made the summer of ’83 complete. Whether work or play was a part of the student’s summer, each one looked toward the consolidation with both anxiety and anticipation. As the year progressed, we began to see our possibilities. The dawn of the new L.H.S. would bring a brighter year. NEW FACES NEW ENTHUSIASM “We all started out making friends, and communicating about the past and the present. That was one of the first steps taken, in order to establish our ‘new beginning!”’ Paula Mack The 1983-84 school year was full of hope. Eager fans crowded the bleachers and cheered our teams to victory. Spirit and enthusiasm pervaded the school as class members competed as cheerleaders, sportsmen, class leaders, and beauty contestants. Annual and newspaper staff members struggled with deadlines. Excitement was a major part of each class activity. A new spirit of enthusiasm was definitely here! n NEW FRIENDS . iK?t ■ . K g . V “When the information to consolidate was first presented to me, I felt a bucket of tears rolling down my eyes, but as time passed I realized that this may have been the best decision ever made by the Darlington School Board! I would now like to say that consolidation is the key to success!” Sharon Gilmore “We must work and strive for the best in our new beginning Deloris Ross “It is surprising how endings and beginnings can sometimes merge together to lessen onefs excitement and the other's sorrow” Hope Windham DEDICATION The 1984 Elixir staff feels that the student body has exhibited the most desirable attributes expected of students. In the consolidation, they have been willing to sacrifice without complaining, to make adjustments when needed, and to cooperate with each other and the administration. They have demonstrated school spirit, enthusiasm, and leadership, and they have formed friendships which gave the student body a feeling of always having been one. They have made a new beginning with a renewed dedication to take full advantages of the many opportunities afforded them at L.H. S. For having exemplified these very fine qualities, the 1984 Elixir is dedicated to you, the student body of L.H.S. We would like to thank each and every one of you for being the special people that you have proven yourselves to be! Miss L.H.S. This year we were honored to have Mr. Jim Newsom as our Master of Ceremonies. There were many exciting moments during the pageant, but the most pleasurable one was when Miss Angie Taylor was crowned the new Miss L.H.S. HOMECOMING Homecoming was an exciting and hectic week. Pep rallies, the Homecoming Parade, supper, the Big game, and the thrill and anticipation of naming a new Homecoming Queen. It is either an eight or twelve page paper published four times a year and it is given to all students free of charge. Newspaper staff members must raise the money needed for publication through the sale of ads and money raising projects. The students work very hard to make their publication interesting, timely, and newsworthy. Though publishing Fox Talk entails a great deal of hard work, the reward of producing a paper everyone looks forward to is worth it. Hopefully, you'll never have to see the world this way. Last year, though, in South Carolina over 1200 people did. And almost half of them were Black. Some were mothers or fathers who left behind children. Others were children themselves—kids who will never get to run and play with the rest of their friends. Just because they were hit by a car. Its sad because you can make sure it doesn't happen to you. Watch out for cars. Wait for the light. Look both ways. Be careful of walking in the roadway at night. Now instead of thinking of the past, let’s look forward to tomorrow and the da wning of a new day. In the state of South Carolina Is the school we love. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Guided from above. To prepare us for life's battle, May we never fail Mold our minds and hearts for service, Lamar High School, all hail! Honor, courage, faith and duty Are our watch words true As we work and play together As we study, too Loyal to thee, we will love thee Let our colors sail Black and gold will reign triumphant, Lamar High School, all hail! In case you haven’t noticed already, you have come to the final page of this yearbook, but if you will observe even more closely, you will see that you have also reached the final days of this 1983-84 school year. Although, the days of this school year are fast coming to an end, the memories held within those days will never end. We have laughed, cried, lived and loved and experienced some of the best days of our lives. Hopefully, through the words and pictures of these one hundred some odd pages, this 1984 Elixir staff has entrapped a portion of those most treasured moments. As with the production of any previous yearbook, there have been many persons involved with producing this 1983-84 Elixir, and I would like to thank each for their guidance and support. First of all, there was Mrs. Matthews, although, unfortunately her face wasn’t seen around the halls of L.H.S. this year, she was involved greatly with the early planning, last spring and throughout the summer. Next there is Mrs. Knotts. Although, she was a little slow to learn the language of “yearbookology”, layout design, copy, and the rally weird make-up measurement of picas, she soon caught on and succeeded in aiding the staff in producing what we believe to be the best yearbook ever! Along with these two very important people, there was Mr. Gray, Ms. Beasley, and Ms. White. All three, I would like to thank for aiding with copy, and Ms. Beasley, also for transporting film to and from Color Kwik. Last but not least there is the most important element in producing a yearbook, — the staff. In spite of lost pictures, missing copy, and floating staff members, we managed to get the show on the road, and produce this Elixir 1983-84, and we sincerely hope that in future years as you reflect upon these pages, it will stir within you the special times that made this “New Beginning” so memorable. Sincerely, Beth Rogers Editor-in-Chief
