Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1982 volume:

Dedication Mr. TEC. Dowling I As the members of the Elixir searched for someone to dedicate this year's edition to, we found one of the most deserving people at Lamar High School: Mr. T.E.C. Dowling. Mr. Dowling holds one of. if not the. most controversial positions in the school. We students may not always agree with his decisions, even though he makes them in our best interest. In the short time he has been here, we have seen vast improvements in our school. We have new additions and truly the best school in Darlington county, not just because we help keep it that way, but because of the helpful guidance he gives to each of us. He has won the respect of the students and faculty alike. To you. Mr. Dowling, we dedicate the 1981 Elixir-, and thanks for being such an understanding and helpful person. B Searching for the rainbow's end it's something we all do in one way or another. It doesn't necessarily have to be a rainbow-, it can be anything we look for: The answer to a question, the meaning of a dream, or the fulfilling of a lifelong goal. But we never really find the true end, because when we think we have, we realize that it's just the beginning of another rainbow we must follow. M The years we spend here learning and growing and laughing together is one very big rainbow in our lives. It seems that graduation will be the end of that rainbow, but we will find that its only the beginning of a much bigger rainbow that will take us through life. But we will never forget LHS and its magic, just like we never forget a rainbow that enhances the sky. A Rainbow Of Expressions As you stroll through the halls of Lamar High School, you will see a glowing rainbow of expressions. You will see a various array of smiles, and unfortunately, frowns. It’s nothing unusual to hear laughter every inch of the way. There are expressions of surprise and anger, happiness and frustration. If you walk into a classroom, you may see students in intense thought or misbehaving”. You can see students listening intently or daydreaming. But whatever the expression, it’s just one of many that makes life at LHS what it is. Summer Memories Ah! Summertime! The time to forget about homework, failing tests and bringing home report cards. It's a time when you can stay out late and sleep 'til noon that is unless you have a job like many Lamar High students do. Although not all of us worked, we found other ways to occupy our time. There were vacations and camps and lots of practice for the coming school year. Summer '81 was fun; let’s hope this summer is even better! Do You Know What The Name Of Our Annual Means? If Not Here's The Story Behind Elixir Have you ever wondered what the name of our yearbook means? In the Middle Ages, the early chemists gave the name to a mythical substance that could supposedly turn metal into gold or silver, restore youth, and lengthen life. Although this book cannot be turned into gold or silver, the other two can be accomplished. Years from now as you look back over the pages, it will restore the memories of your youth and lengthen those memories to last throughout the rest of your life. 1 MISS LHS On December 10. 1981, several girls competed for the title of Miss LHS. This year's theme was a Winter Wonderland”. Entertainment was provided by Linda Howell, Scott Gardner. Mr. Alonzo Davis, and Elixir Staff members. Finally the long awaited moment arrived. Our Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Jim Newsom, announced Kathy McDonald as the new Miss LHS. Donna Middleton was first runner-up and Donna Kirby was second runner-up. The Elixir staff would like to thank all who made this event a success: the beautiful girls who participated-, the entertainment; the Master of Ceremonies; the coordinators of the pageant; and the host of people that attended. 20 1 4 Pictures show the following: Opposite Page — (I) K. PALMETTO SPORTING GOODS Hartsville, S.C. 147 ADDING THE FINAL TOUCH Searching for the rainbow’s end ... reaching out to grasp our dreams ... asking questions that are yet unanswered . . . setting goals that will someday be achieved . .. The answers to these concepts and ideals are what the student is continually trying to discover in his ongoing search for the rainbow’s end. Whenever you see the splendor of a rainbow stretching across the sky, do you ever stop to think what its true meaning really is? Perhaps if you look back about 2000 years, you will remember the first rainbow. It appeared as a symbol of promise and beauty to the entire world. LHS is synonomous to a rainbow because it too represents beauty and promise to those students that pass through its halls and classrooms throughout their high school years. Because of all the fond memories and close relationships we have experienced at LHS, it is appropriate that we might call it a beautiful place in which we have spent a portion of our lives. By introducing the students to a vast world of knowledge, obtaining a positive attitude, giving individual support and making us aware of life's responsibilities, LHS offers many promises to students on their quest to find their true rainbow’s end. —— J E RAINBOWS END? Well, looks like we've made it to the end of another rainbow-, the rainbow that stretched from the Fall of 1981 to the late Spring of 1982 In the past several months, we ve laughed and cried, lived and loved, and even fought a little as we participated in the activities that make LHS an unforgettable place to learn and to grow. Sometimes it hasn’t been all that easy, but we've all seemed to pull through it with flying colors and even learned from those experiences. The staff of the Elixir has tried to capture those moments and the emotions that went with them in this year's edition. When you look through this book, we hope it stirs the memories and the nostalgia within you, and hope that you will think of all the dedication and hard work each staff member has mustered in order to make this one of the best Elixirs evert If it wasn't for the cooperation and creativity, there would be very little, if anything, to look back upon years from now to recall those special occasions. So, would like to thank them for a job well done. I would also like to thank Ms. Karnuth for her patience and guidance that helped us meet deadlines on time and helped us iron out all of those problems that popped up from time to time. I’d also like to thank Mrs. Knotts for her help with the finances, and our publishing company, Josten’s, for their instructions and ideas. Thanks to these people, we have a finished product that will hopefully help you to remember this rainbow of a year” forever. I HUE ENID €E ONE RAINBOW . . 1
