We are privileged to have at L.H.S. a dedicated teacher and friend. Mr. Albert Gray has helped our school in many more ways than one. He has been Senior Class sponsor for several years, has taught us English, has helped raise money for the senior trip and other school functions, and has supported other extra-curricular activities. To you, Mr. Gray, we dedicate the 1980 ELIXIR. Thank you for all you've done. 2 Table of Contents DEDICATION........................2 LIVING............................3 PARTICIPATING....................18 LEARNING ........................80 TEACHING........................116 SUPPORTING......................130 3 A Time for Us A Time for Memories The ELIXIR celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. During these past years, times have changed and so have the people. To you. ELIXIR, happy anniversary: without you the great memories of Lamar High School would be lost. A place to give, a place to receive, a place to just be you. Here at L.H.S., we are a proud Student Body, because of the experiences and excitement that take place during the school year. Here at L.H.S. we enjoy dances. Pep Rallies, the Homecoming parade, lunch breaks, and just walking down the halls smiling or saying hello. We work hard learning vocabulary words, doing term papers, studying, listening to lectures, and working on extracurricular projects. We try hard because we know that one day it may help us reach our desired goals. We are one of the best schools around, and we will strive to keep it that way. There is a time for us. This is our time; this is our place. A Time for Participating L.H.S. has many activities, organizations, and honors that students can join, be elected to. earn, or be chosen for; such as, softball, baseball, football ... band, Beta Club, cheerleaders ... scholarships and beauty contests. We all have the opportunity to participate in our time and our place. Varsity Football (1) The 1979 Varsity Football Team: left to right — top to bottom — TOP: Coach D. Poole, R. Washington. J. Lost were 16 members from last year’s squad, so this year's season was spent to rebuild for the future. Many young players gained valuable experience on the field. The team showed promise for the next season as they displayed much talent, patience and dedication. 20 (2) Coach Poole has a conference with quarterback Manson. KEEPING THAT SPIRIT!! This group of girls was the backbone of the football spirit this year. They strongly supported the team and cheered in freezing temperatures and drenching rain. They prepared spirit banners, rendered us moving pep rallies, and raised money for the Booster Club, all of which was greatly appreciated. So, let’s take time to commend them on their everlasting spirit, continuous hard work, and never-ending dedication. Thanks a bundle!! (1) Varsity Football Cheerleaders of 1979: left to right — M. Bell JV’S HAVE THIRD STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON Talent, determination, inspiration, and perspiration led the JV football team of 1979 to a six and two season record. The well-coached and well-disciplined team demonstrated their unconquerable abilities by completely overpowering their opponents in their victories. Each of the wins can be attributed to team effort and team spirit, in the traditional LHS fashion. (2) Charlie prepares for rough play. (3) Running back Evander Gerald outraces pursuers. The nine young ladies chosen cheered at both JV football and JV basketball games. They supplied that magic ingredient of spirit in the gym and on the field. They did a fine job of supporting our JV sports, and a tremendous job of representing our school. GO JV’S!!! (1) Left to right — L. Howell, P. Allen. P. Jones, K. McDonald, S. Lane, S. Munn, C. Lloyd YOUNG TEAM HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS The 1979-80 Edition of the Foxettes was composed of young players. There were no seniors on the team. The girls had a new coach, Perry Bell, who had to rebuild the team. He did a fine job of it, and the Foxettes proved to be real fighters. They lost some tough games and won some tough games. Next year should turn out to be very successful for the girls, since the entire team will be returning. (2) Sonya with the rebound. (3) Lamar gets the tip-off. (4) Pam makes an easy lay-up. ROCKIN' STEADY Rockin' steady was only part of the contribution these girls donated to the basketball program this year. They stuck with the teams through thick and thin. When the team was down, the girls worked even harder to rouse spirits and get the momentum on our side. Their vivacious support was always nothing less than superb; we thank them for it. As costs go up and money is harder to get for such things as high school publications, we hope the student body and faculty support continues and, in fact, grows. Every time we hear it play or see it march, the band is more and more of a harmonic unit. It is gratifying to see that the band, under the direction of Ms. Ellen Dubord, has come such a long way in such a relatively short period of time. Four flag girls were added to the band this year. These girls have learned their maneuvers well, and they certainly add a certain zing and liveliness to the L.H.S. marching band. It is great that Lamar High has such a fine band. It is thrilling to hear and see these accomplished students. 9 Rifle Girls: 1. to r. — Pearlie Mae George, Charlotte Coe.
