Without their help and guidance Lamar High student body would not be what it is today. Area Office Mr. Jimmy H. Newsom took another big step this year to help make Lamar High School the best school possible; he is now Superintendent of Lamar Area Schools. He received his Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1976. Mr. Dowling has been a great new asset to Lamar High. Being a Marshall is one of the highest honors Lamar High has to offer. This honor is conveyed on the juniors with the highest academic averages in the class. The honor of being Chief Marshall goes to the rising senior who has the highest academic average. Thorny Windham Mark Segars 86 Scholars Lamar High School is extremely proud of its scholarship winners. These students are the epitome of the kind of student our school is striving to produce. The four scholarship winners from this year’s senior class are our school's best examples of honor, leadership, and academic superiority. Sometimes, a boy, more than anyone else on the staff, devotes time and effort and creativity to the Elixir. Therefore, the staff has decided that there should be a Mr. Elixir as well as a Miss Elixir. This year’s recipients have dedicated several years to meaningfully producing a better and better Elixir. Priscilla Greene Angie Meggs Teacher of the Year Ms. Jane Waitt was named “Teacher of the Year in an election sponsored by the Student Council. C. 163 Lamar High Student Council 164 165 In Memoriam William Lee McDonald October 31, 1922—February 4, 1978 On Saturday, February 4, 1978, Coach William Lee McDonald passed away, leaving a tremendous gap here at Lamar High School. We all loved him dearly and will treasure the memories of him we hold in our hearts. Coach McDonald, as he was referred to by the students, or Mr. Mac, by some of the teachers, served our school faithfully in many capacities. He was baseball coach for five years, football coach for seven years, and athletic director for the entire eight years he was at Lamar High. He taught us well as a history and social studies teacher; and he served as chairman of the social studies department. Coach McDonald came to us from Florida, where he had taught and coached many years.
