And before I know it join in. Get me near a melody And I sing Yes, I sing Let me sing along. I I hear that long lonesome highway Calling out my name. And soon I'll he leaving Cause our love's not the same. And as I look hack, I wipe a tear from my eye. And it’s not easy to try not to cry. Then suddenly there’s a memory. Of that day long ago. The first time that I met you, A nd then you loved me so. But not it’s all over, and I just can’t stay. So darling let me kiss you And I’ll be on my way, Yes, I’ll be on my way. “ There are smiles that make us happy. There are smiles that make us blue. There are smiles that steal away the teardrops As the sun beams steal away the dew, There are smiles that have a tender meaning That the eyes of love alone may see, A nd the smiles that fill my life with sunshine Are the smiles that you give to me. “Everything is beautiful in its own way. Like a starry summer night and a snow-covered winter's day Everybody’s beautiful in their own way Under God’s heaven; we’ve going to find a way. ” Words and Music by Ray Stevens e Copyright 1970 by A HA B Music Company. Inc 10 Today you cried, you were all alone. No one anywhere was to be found. You thought the world could never go on You couldn't think straight cause you were so down. When you wiped the tears away from your eyes, And finally looked out over the land. There stood there much to your surprise, A friend just waiting to give you a helping hand. 14 “ As it began. So I will end it. Singing a song of long ago Loving the people I’ve befriended, A nd singing a song of Long ago . . . ” We are deeply indebted to Sandl per Press and to Mrs. Katharine Boling, South Ca ina author of A PIECE OF THE FOX'S HIDE, for wing us to use a replica of the jacket cover of her book as the cover for our 1973 - 74 yearbook. A PIECE OF THE FOX'S HIDE is a chilling history of the most notorious family South Carolina has ever known--the Binghams. Numbered among its members were doctors, prominent landowners, a civil engineer and a state senator; and for 5 generations they dominated and expanded their influence along a considerable section of territory situated along the Pee Dee River. What a Bingham wanted, he took, in utter defiance of the law, and the family name commanded a respect engendered mostly by fear of their unscrupulous practices. Their reign ended in 1921 with the mass murder of all the remaining family members except Edmund Bingham, who was later tried and convicted for the slayings. The Binghams brought such terror to their area of South Carolina that to this day, there are residents of the River Road who acquire a frightened look and will turn away with a haunted expression at the mere mention of the Bingham name. Mrs. Boling's home is in the little town of Pamplico, right in the heart of what was once known as Bingham country and much of the present Boling farm land was once owned by the Bingham family. Because of this and the fact that her husband's great-grandfather died on the witness stand, testifying against the accused murderer, Edmund Bingham, Mrs. Boling has always had a deep interest in the Bingham story. Mrs. Boling is an attractive housewife, the mother of 7 children, a newspaper correspondent and a freelance w’riter. In addition to A PIECE OF THE FOX'S HIDE Mrs. Boling has just published a new book, COUNTRY BUNNIES. ■ ® Tombstone of the late Senator Leonard Smiley Bingham, father of the infamous Bingham family. -' +' ' !-■ ?vA4iM yitfitri r. . i Jp ABOVE: The old Bingham home has burned but pictured here is one of the 2 original structures left standing. Because . . . of your dedication to us, Mrs. Donohoe, we the Yearbook Staff, are proud to dedicate our 1974 ELIXIR to you. We appreciate the endless hours spent on behalf of the students, the guiding and comforting words given. And most of all, for the love shown to all. We dedicate this book to Mrs. Dene Donohoe. The Foxes got off to a slow start as they lost their first three games of the campaign. They then came on strongly and convincingly won their next three games. The team then won 2 of their last four games to finish the season at 5-5. With a little more effort on the part of the players, coaches, and fans we feel this record could have been much improved. Next year some of the younger players must move up to fill the void left by the graduating seniors. If these young players improve and perform adequately, next year’s team could be a good one. We feel that we have two of the finest coaches a team could possibly have. Head coach William McDonald, and assistant coach John Bloom have done an excellent job considering the lack of facilities and the small number of players from which to choose. Since coming to Lamar 4 years ago, Coach William McDonald has instilled a winning tradition that we hope will continue indefinitely. KNEELING: Coach Don Poole and Manager Doc Blathers. The 1973-'74 version of the Lamar Silver Foxes has been a very promising one. This team is very deep in talent with players who can step into any situation and perform capably. The Foxes at this point have a 7-1 conference slate with a 9-5 overall record Of the five defeats, three have been by two points or less. They could have been very easily turned into wins. Coach Don Poole has done an extremely good job of preparing his charges for the tough, schedule they have to face. As the tournament approaches we are expecting big things of this team and wish them the best of luck. The Griffins The people of Lamar, and especially L.H.S., are deeply indebted to Dr. and Mrs. Sidney T. Griffin for their many hours of unselfish service. Dr. Griffin is president of the Booster Club and is always available at ball-games to attend injured players. Mrs. Griffin is very active in the community and accompanies Dr. Griffin to all the ballgames. BACK ROW: Manager Jenny Yarborough, Angela James, Patricia Daniels, Yetta Ivey, Tammy Turner, Judy Garner, and Coach Roy Jaynes. The Lamar Foxettes in their first year of competition after four years of layoff have gotten off to a slow start. Their record at midseason was 1-9. Under Coach Roy Haynes, who is in his first year as coach, the team has shown steady improvement. Despite a lack of height and experience, the team has shown a great deal of hustle and a desire to win. Injuries to some key players have also hurt the team's chances. Mr. Jaynes is a very dynamic coach. He has instilled in his team much of his dynamic spirit. This spirit is evidenced by the team's drive on the court. As the team steadily improves, all eyes turn toward the tournament where a good showing is expected. Good luck girls and keep on working hard! BACK ROW: Thorny Windham, Rocky Hudson, Robin Benson, Chester King, Pavolyn Chavis, and Coach John Bloom. As this yearbook went to press, the Lamar JV's were experiencing a very disappointing season so far. Their record was 2-6, with victories over Olanta and Ashwood-Central. This is a young team with many inexperienced players. These young players have not become discouraged, however, and have played very well in recent games. Coach Johm Bloom works very hard to prepare his team and he expects them to improve greatly before tournament time. With more hard work and a great desire to excel, this team could easily repeat as conference champions. The Elixir Staff The Elixir Staff of LHS is composed of many dedicated members. Without the many Tfiours of hard work by the staff, this yearbook would not have been possible. Mrs. Jac-Adele Beasley and Mrs. Dorothy Campbell are the catalysts that make this staff go. So far this year they have studied foods and nutrition, taking into consideration the high costs and the food shortage, and knowing that as future homemakers they will have to cope with these problems. Also, in order to cut down on expenses, they designed and made their own garments. TTiese clothes were shown in a fashion show presented for the Lamar High student body. We are very proud of our girls and we know that they will be great homemakers! ! Mrs. Edwards has done an extremely commendable job in her work with these girls and with the FHA. The role of the Bus Driver at LHS is an extremely responsible one. The drivers transport hundreds of children each day. To a small child the bus driver is one of his first heroes. We are very fortunate to have such capable and dependable students in our program. B Student Aides Ester, Rebecca, books. Gloria, and Mamie all seem to enjoy Teresa has an important announcement! Library Student aides furnish a valuable service at L.H. S. in the office and in the library. In the office they help Mrs. Jones keep up with the many demands made of her and do clerical work. Mrs. Ann Hargrove is the director of the program and is assisted by Mrs. Augusta Saverance. The tutors as well as the ones being tutored, are better students because of this program. We have our own brains, our own kooks, and our own regular people. The brains study every night for that A in biology, while other people get it by unknown sources. However, we'll see who ends up the best in the long run. The kooks are the people who dress up like ladies for womanless weddings and the ones who dress Beta Rats. Of course there are the ones who dress naturally and still look like kooks. The regular people are the ones who walk around school looking regular. They make average grades and never seem to get in trouble. They really do, only they're smart enough to get out of it. ¥ People from the sophomore class take part in every activity. The football team probably wouldn't even have a team if it wasn't for the sophomores. We make up half of the team (in numbers). . The boys I basketball I team wouldn't be the same at all. We have a few Randy Coe Ronnie Coe very good players on the team. The girls basketball team would be minus about four or five of its best players. Without the sophomore cheerleaders you might not be able to hear them at all. That Bernice Damon Patricia Daniels is because our sophomore girls have big mouths. All for the better to cheer with.
