The Lamar Annual Staff Presents The 1971 Elixir Volume XXII WE CAN READ POETRY, AND RECITE POETRY, BUT TO LIVE POETRY - IS THE SYMPHONY OF LIFE. - FOOTE SCHOOL LIFE CLASSES DEDICATION ELEMENTARY HONORS FACULTY SPORTS ELEMENTARY ACTIVITIES CLASSES FACULTY ADS When you arc faced with a decision, make that decision as wisely as possible. We fought among oursclv es. , ■? I f ' 4 Tmm - TS Tgryiiirifr r r-. i Forgot what you have done for your friends, and remember what they have done for you. Live each day to the fullest; get tiie most from each hour, each day. and each age of your life. Then you can look forward with confidence, and back without regrets. APPRECIATION I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day. I’d rather one should walk with me than merely show the way. The eye’s a better pupil and more willing than the ear; Fine counsel is confusing, but example’s always clear; And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds, For to see the good in action is what everybody needs. I can soon learn how to do it if you’ll let me see it done. I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very wise and true; But I’d rather get my lesson by observing what you do. For I may misunderstand you and the high advice you give, But there’s no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. — Edgar A. Guest DEDICATION It is with the greatest respect and appreciation that we dedicate the 1971 Elixir to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Newsome For her helpfulness, her unfailing kindness, her unending patience, and her deep understanding, we will be eternally grateful. For his high ideals, his guidance, his sympathetic understanding, his exceptional ability as a principal and a coach, for his unfailing loyalty to both school and community, and his captivating friendliness, we thank him. We hope that they will always cherish our love as we cherish theirs. True worth is in being, not seeming — In doing, each day that goes by, Some little good — not in dreaming Of great things to do by and by. For whatever men say in their blindness, And, spite of the fancies of youth, There’s nothing so kingly as kindness, And nothing so royal as truth. We get back our mete as we measure — We cannot do wrong and feel right, Nor can we give pain and gain pleasure, For justice avenges each slight. The air for the wing of the sparrow, The bush for the robin and wren, But always the path that is narrow And straight, for the children of men. We cannot make bargains for blisses, Nor catch them like fishes in nets; And sometimes the thing our life misses Helps more than the thing which it gets. For good lieth not in pursuing, Nor gaining of great nor of small, But just in the doing, and doing As we would be done by, is all. — Alice Cary HONORS MOST ATHLETIC -- MITCHELL TYNER and BEST ALL AROUND -- GARY ANDERSON and DIANNF GRANTHAM THEDI WRIGHT l rESS IN ALL SUBJECTS. MARSHALS ’69-70 Each year those students who have maintained superior academic achievement throughout their high school careers are selected from the rising senior class to serve as Marshals for the three nights of commencement activities. Those pictured here served as the 1969-1970 Marshals. CHIEF MARSHAL — Elton Register If you think you are beaten, you are, If you think you dare not, you don’t, If you like to win, but you think you can’t It’s almost a cinch that you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost, For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow’s will, It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you’re outclassed, You are, you’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battle doesn’t always go To the swifter or faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can” — Selected SPORTS THE 1970 SILVER FOXES |§f SQUAD Managers, along with Coaches Polk, Messick, Poole, and Head Coach Bill McDonald watch the game. However, if it were not for our capable sponsor, Miss Jac-Adele , as she is affectionately called, this wonderful book of memories could never have been published. F H A RACK ROW: J. Williams, J. With the coming and going of new and old students, things were thrown into a state of confusion. The Student Government found itself unable to cope with the situation and, as a result, went into an apparent state of nonexistence. When the new school year arrived, the need for a modified Student Government and Constitution became more than strikingly evident. Those persons delegated to this task found the responsibility great. However, just before mid-term a solution was discovered. It required the addition of a bi-racial committee to discuss problems that might cause friction between the black and white students. Also, black and white co-officers, as well as black and white student council representatives from each grade, were deemed necessary to sustain a harmonious relationship between the two races. The success of this plan is yet to be seen. However, the members of the Student Government will take every step to insure that it will be a complete success. BI-RACIAL COMMITTEE: C. Stewart, D. Great is thy skill, O Builder, Thy fame shall endure for aye.’ A teacher builded a temple; She wrought with skill and care; Forming each pillar with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None saw the unceasing effort; None knew of the marvelous plan; For the temple the teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the builder’s temple; — Crumbled into the dust, — Pillar and groin and arches Food for consuming rust; But the temple the teacher builded Shall endure while the ages roll; — For that beautiful, unseen temple Was a child’s immortal soul.” FACULTY Mrs. Bobby Mozingo — Social Worker 74 Mr. Cliff Saverance — Lamar Area School Superintendent Mrs. Sharon Blackwell — Secretary Mr. Harry Frampton --Title 1 Coordinator Mrs. Vonnc Andrews -- Secretary Mrs. Ann Hudson -- Secretary Mrs. Jac-Adele Beasley — English, Spanish Mrs. Lurline Dubose — History, English Mr. Albert Gray — English, Math Mrs. Thelma Beasley — Guidance Counselor, English Miss Barbara Andrews — Science Mrs. Susan Bell —French Mrs. Blanche Thomas — Science, Biology, and Math Mrs. Dene Donohoe — Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Mrs. Garon Whitaker — Shorthand, Typing, Office Practice, and Business English 79 Miss Flossie Cousai __ Math Math and Senior Mrs. Jane Wait - Algebra, Geometry, Mr. Donald Poole — Physical Education and Drivers' Education Mrs. Juanita Edwards — Home Economics and Family living.
