At a pep rally the cheerleaders lead student body in the give me an L cheer. 56 CHEERLEADERS Our cheerleaders, under the leadership of Cathy Segars, head cheerleader, and Mrs. Gordon Brown, faculty sponsor, have done much to lead our teams to victory as well as to promote school spirit. The cheerleaders are chosen in the spring by Mrs. Brown and Athletic Director, John Socha. Many girls try but only a few meet the qualifications. At a basketball game, the cheerleaders look on hoping for two more points. This year the varsity cheerleaders were Jeannie Fields, Racheal Harris, Jenny White, Cathy Segars, Cindy Watford, Pammie Parnell, and Beth Stewart. Quarterback Warren Jeffords hands off to Myrtis Knotts, no. 21, as he goes for the hole opened by tiie linemen. Under the leadership of head coach John Socha, the Lamar Silver Foxes faced the 1967-68 season with tiie hope of winning the 5-B Conference. Tilings looked bright most of the year but the 19 to 6 loss to Latta killed the team's chance to come out on top of conference 5-B. Tiie defensive unit proved to be strong during the first part of the season. They were able to hold down the scoring of the opponents so the offense could take possession of the ball and put some points on the scoreboard for Lamar. This season's record (7 wins, 4 losses) could not have been possible without the determined effort of each member of the team. The Lamar fans also helped by their fine support and enthusiasm toward the games. Our Foxes lost tiie conference championship by the close margin of one-half game. Lamar lost only the conference game which was to Latta. With Latta having only one more conference game (with T'Ville), it was Lamar's only hope that Timmons-ville should win; thus, causing a tie for first place between Latta and Lamar. However, all hope was diminished when T'Ville fought Latta to a tie. This ended the Foxes' chance for a conference championship. It was a sad occasion for nine boys on the team because it was their last season on the Silver Foxes' team. These boys will truly be missed by their teammates during the next season. Without the true devotion and love of the sport, our team could not have gone as far as they did. 63 Quarterback, Kenneth Reynolds, calls the next play for the junior Foxes. The Club provides opportunities for boys and girls to help plan and carry out goals and programs based on their interests and needs. The 4-H youth of today is being trained to carry on what adults have started. In order to be successful all members need the cooperation and interests of adults in all of their many projects. The price of membership in 4-H clubs is that each member shall complete during the school term, one or more projects, keep a record of all work done, and turn in the record at the end of the year. In South Carolina the first Boys 4-H Club was organized in 1906. The Girls Club was organized in 1910. In America there are more than two million members. In Darlington County alone there are more than a thousand. The work of these clubs is guided throughout the United States and its territories jointly by the Cooperative Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Land-grant colleges. 4-H is promoted by many business organizations including Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and Olin Chemical Company. One of the ultimate goals is to win the award of being an I F Y E Student with all expenses paid for a six months visit to a foreign country on an exchange basis. More than 45 other nations now have 4-H Clubs patterned after ours in the United States. The work of the 4-H Club is certainly a program of activity, adventure, and achievement. 133 LIBRARY CLUB Mary Fields, Cindy Windham, Gordon Windham, Marilyn Huggins, Cheryl Lloyd, Dawn Galloway.
