ALMA MATER In the State of South Carolina Is the School we love Hail to thee our Alma Mater Guided from above. To prepare us for life's battle, May we never fail. Mold our minds and hearts for service Lamar High School, All Hail! Honor, courage, faith and duty Are our watch words true As we work and play together As we study, too. Loyal to thee, we will love thee Let our colors sail. Red and white will reign triumphant Lamar High School, All Hail! THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER Oh, say, can you see, By the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, Were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free, And the home of the brave ? 966 Published by the Annual Staff of Lamar High School Lamar, South Carolina Volume 17 Lamar High School bif being imbed or spent, until the coming of Christ Freedom to learn enjoyably, freedom to express learnedly, freedom to share our knowledge wisely, freedom to lead others to freedom - the legacy of Lamar High School. There is a mental freedom in our formation of ideas as freshmen, in our sustaining of thoughts as sophomores, and in our labors of expression as juniors. Finally, this freedom is brought to bear in our recognition of mature understanding as seniors. Through these four years we see clearly our life's purpose as free individuals. Through the high educational standards set for us, we develop good minds for solid bodies and clean hearts for pure souls. We leave, treasuring our gifts of freedom, the legacy of Lamar High School. FOOTBALL 58 SENIOR PLAYERS 59 Robert Powers SEASON’S RECORD The Foxes started off the season by pulling off an unexpected win over the Dragons of Bishopville High by a score of fifteen to seven. The pre-season practices working up to the first game were actually spent rebuilding the team, after losing eleven players due to graduation the previous year. The only two starters to return to the lineup this year were quarterback Tommy Suggs and halfback Rocky Scarborough. Both boys had very good seasons. Tommy was throwing very good passes this year and was able to complete nine for touchdowns, while Rocky was often on the receiving end. Several others among sophomores and juniors contributed much to the team. Halfbacks Myrtis Knotts and Jamie Amerson were able to gain much needed yardage by their fine running and pass receptions. Jimmy Parnell who at one time played center, turned out to be a fine backfield runner at fullback. The Foxes line was quite small this year and averaged only 143 pounds per man. At right guard Robert Windham really helped the team with his fine blocking and tackling. 60 The second and only other win of the season was the victory over Timmonsville, twenty one to seven. Jamie Amerson had two touchdowns, one extra point and a pass interception to contribute to the win. Rocky Scarborough ran in the other touchdown and extra point while Tommy Suggs contributed an extra point. The Foxes ended up the season with two wins and nine losses. Next year every player but the three seniors, Rocky Scarborough, Robert Powers, and Harrell Jordan will return to work on a very good season for next year. I don't know when it really started. It was probably several years ago when my sister Jane was editor that I became interested in what really goes into a yearbook. Officially it began last spring when I was elected to this position by our staff. Linda and Candy were good enough to become co-assistant editors, June as business manager, and Daphene as assistant business manager. Bless their little hearts! In regards to the book itself, many changes should be apparent. The book is about the same size or a little fatter. The layout is different and takes a little getting used to. There is more copy and more pictures, bigger than in the past. As deadlines drew nearer, the job became more like work. Pictures were harder to get. Although I look at our yearbook now and see that it has been a great privilege to be editor, there have been many, many heartaches as well as headaches in making this book. I still think that some of them, students, teachers, and staff members would have been much better off if they had been more tactful and co-operative. People have hurt my feelings more than once this year. Even though I say this, there have been times when everybody was willing to do all he or she could and I've been grateful to each and everyone of them. Especial thanks go to Mrs. Olin DuBose for bearing with us through this year. Sometimes I wonder how she did it! I hope that through the coming years, this yearbook will be a joy to look back on. Much has gone into making it as good as we could. I think that all of us have summed it up in the following words. It was a lot of fun but it sure wasn't easy! You know, that's right!
