1965 ELIXIR THE STATE As youth of the Palmetto State, we are ever conscious of our great tradition and proud of our marked progress. Our Southern heritage has been held in high esteem in the past; we, as leaders of tomorrow, shall endeavor to uphold the ideals of our great forefathers. With these thoughts in mind, we present our 1965 yearbook, the ELIXIR. 4 ALMA MATER In the State of South Carolina Is the School we love Hail to thee our Alma Mater Guided from above. To prepare us for life's battle, May we never fail. Mold our minds and hearts for service Lamar High School, All Hail! Honor, courage, faith and duty Are our watch words true As we work and play together As we study, too. Loyal to thee, we will love thee Let our colors sail. Red and white will reign triumphant Lamar High School, All Hail! CAROLINA Call on thy children of the hill, Wake swamp and river, coast and rill, Rouse all thy strength and all thy skill, Carolina! Carolina! Hold up the glories of thy dead; Say how thy elder children bled, And point to Eutaw's battle-bed, Carolina! Carolina! Thy skirts indeed the foe may part, Thy robe be pierced with sword and dart, They shall not touch thy noble heart, Carolina! Carolina! Throw thy bold banner to the breeze! Front with thy ranks the threatening seas Like thine own proud armorial trees, Carolina! Carolina! Girt with such wills to do and bear, Assured in right, and mailed in prayer, Thou wilt not bow thee to despair, Carolina! Carolina! 5 OLD HIGH SCHOOL “YE OLE STOMP LAMAR HI ELEMENTARY ING GROUNDS” GH SCHOOL STUDENT Mrs. Lurline A. DuBose It is with love and gratitude that we dedicate the 1965 ELIXIR to Mrs. Lurline A. DuBose for her many hours of devoted work at Lamar High School. The character portrayed in her daily life has been a guiding example to her many students and friends. It is she who has taught us to appreciate the lovely state of South Carolina, which was chosen as our theme. 10 n ADMINISTRA TION 1 1 SUPERINTENDENT Mr. D.K. Brasington SECRETARY Mrs. Carl Fountain A school whose primary interest is to create an outstanding academic ability in its students, has as its leaders Mr. D. K. Brasington, Superintendent, and Mr. W. E. McIntosh, High School Principal. Men possessing the strength and courage necessary to do right consistently, and the development of an outstanding character in the lives of the students have received their foremost attention. Their daily examples have elicited the admiration and respect of their many students. The efficient operation of Lamar High School would be impossible without well-trained secretaries. The smoothness with which the many operations of the school are performed is evidence of character and dependability. Many thanks to Mrs. Carl Fountain and Mrs. Charles Hudson for a job well done. He must consistently be an example of spirituality; he must exhibit that vision and courage which will become a lasting part of the character of his students; he must constantly seek to give them a sense of practicality and usefulness. This is the role of the teachers at Lamar High School. Their influence upon the lives of the students enrolled here continues in lives of graduates long after they have left the halls and walks of Lamar High School. 17 IN MEM OR Y MR. R.L. SPEARS We honor the memory of Mr. R. L. Spears for the many years of service he rendered to the schools of our area. He wanted the best for our schools and worked with great zeal to promote the welfare of our schools and our youth. As a trustee for thirty-four years he gave many hours of his time and energy. We are happy to have had him as our trustee and as a citizen in our community. MRS. LOUISE RINEHART In memory of one who was completely dedicated to her work with little children. For thirty-two years she gave unstint -ingly of her time, talents, and love, to the education of the youths in several parts of the country. She taught for seventeen years in the Lamar Schools. With infinite patience she nurtured and molded the Little Ones entrusted to her care. Her great love for children was reflected inthe response of her students, who were devoted Miss Louise. •a. 18 FEA TURES 19 MISS LAMAR HIGH MISS MARILYN TOLSON 20 MR. The Lamar High School Football Team started its 1964 football season with a squad of sixteen varsity players; of these, eleven were seniors with previous experience. A pre-season glance at the height and weight of these youths would suggest a season of no wins for the Lamar Silver Foxes. The squad was the smallest, both in physical build and in number, that had stepped on the practice field at Lamar in many years. But physical appearance does not show team spirit, cooperation, self-discipline, and the tremendous desire to win. These young men understood the handicap they would be working under, due to their size and number, and the sacrifice of individual honor and praise would have to give way to a team effort. The 1964 football team may not be remembered for its record of 4 wins, 4 loses, and 2 ties, but it will be remembered as a team that played above its potential, due to the individual efforts of a small group of youths. Each individual player took pride in the achievements of his team mates. With integrity, desire, composure, team unity and its will to never quit, this football squad will long be remembered by its fans and especially by the Lamar High School Coaching Staff.
