With the help of the 1959 ELIXIR, we will not - -for in its pages are outlined our curriculum, our activities, and the events of the year so that they will live on in our hearts forever. As we turn the pages of the ELIXIR in the years to come, we shall recall the faces of friends we grew to love, the clubs we were so much a part of, and the long hours of work and study we underwent. All of this is, and was, truly L. H. S. In order to thank her, on behalf of all the students, we, the students of the yearbook staff, dedicate with pride the 1959 Elixir to her. Since Mrs. Joye has been here at Lamar High School she has molded a basketball team which has brought laurels to our school. She has worked as sponsor for many junior and senior classes. For her genuine character and human understanding we are grateful. For her loyalty, devotion, and ceaseless efforts to accommodate, we thank her. The crowd shivered and waited in the freezing night . . . Suddenly, over the loudspeaker rang a voice announcing the winner, the moment of suspense had passed, and the spectators began to cheer! Miss Jean Stewart was handed the winner's bouquet and officially became Football Queen of 1959! FOOTBALL SPONSORS Mary Sue Rogers sponsored by Don Bochette Judy Windham sponsored by J. B. HOMECOMING HOMECOMING QUEEN The students had a hard choice to make - - all the contestants were well qualified and popular - but when Miss Peggy Watford was announced homecoming queen, every one was sure that the choice had been an excellent one. Homecoming this year had been indeed different and more enjoyable for past and present students, and Peggy, with her sweet conscientious, and gentle manner, was certainly the one to reign over the event. At first it was only a dream - - a dream that started early in the summer. In this dream we didn't visualize the time, work, and patience required to shape it. We didn't consider the complications of getting cars every week to get ads or planning beauty contests or conducting picture sales. It all seemed so simple until we began the real work. But after many long hours of thinking, drawing, and planning we have seen our dreams become a reality in the 1959 ELIXIR. I Solving our biggest problem money to finance the annual. Ml Adeadlineto meet......... BETA The Beta Club, which this year is one of the largest in our school’s history, has had a full year. Being a service as well as an honor society, they have contributed much to the school. The friendly faces in the supply room each morning and the haggard, but willing, ones at the consession stand at ball games belonged to none other than Betas. Officers: Efford Windham, pres.; Penelope Galloway, v. pres.; Sara Ann Tallon, secy.; Pat Truluck, treas.; Mrs. D. K. Bras-ington, sponsor. 28 CLUB You know the saying All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” - well, the Betas know it, too? Besides the socials after each meeting, they had a Christmas party and attended the Beta Club Convention. They know how to have a good time and uphold the Beta Club principles at the same time! The Betas would like to leave a message to the students who were not among the ranks this year: Work so that you, too, can become a part of this wonderful organization. THE SPECTATOR VOLUME XIII NO. 6 LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 1959 Have you read the new Spectator ? It's great! f These are the kind of remarks we hear every time the Spectator reaches us hot off the press. All this praise is due to the wonderful work of the sponsors, Mrs. Garon Whitaker and Miss Lucy Rasheed; the editor, Ethel Parnell; and the diligent staff, who have put themselves wholeheartedly into the publishing of a paper that will truly give the students of L.H.S. freedom of the press. Bonnie White Peggy Watford President Janice Weaver The Student Council is the govern -ingbodyof our school; it's members, the leaders of tomorrow. It is composed of a legislative body elected on merit by the student body. Its purposes are: to be a median between teachers and students, to enforce laws, and to take charge of certain school functions. 31 Thompson Lou Tolson Jackie Watford Billy Watford FUTURE HOMEMAKERS ASSOCIATION The F.H.A. is a national organization composed of home economics students. The officers of the organization are: Gordan Weaver-President, Don Watford-Vice President, Joey Doriety-Secretary, Byrd Fountain-Treasurer, Richard Lloyd-Reporter, Bud Casper-Sentinental, and Mr. Alton Jeffords-Spon-sor. L.H.S ELEMENTARY BAND That little band that gave the high school band so much competition at the concert was none other than our elementary band. The members of it are getting their training early so that they will one day be able to become first rate members of the high school band. ♦ Is it possible that the racket we heard in the band room at the beginning of the year is now music? !? It's hard to believe that the music that poured from the instruments of silver foxes as they marched in the Hartsville Christmas Parade, Homecoming Parade, BAND DANCE BAND The dance band is composed of selected members of the band who were chosen after stiff tryouts. These people have received experience through additional opportunities to perform in public and have made further advances in their music as a result. and all the football games was produced from the same questionable sounds? These musicians led by Gus Moody, director, Douglas Jordan, drum major, and Robin Scarborough, head majorette, thrilled many at these events as well as at concerts given jointly with the L.H.S. Glee Club. L.H.S. MIXED CHORUS Have you heard the glee club lately? Well, it is really what is termed as an excellent singing group! It wasn’t easy to become this; but under Mrs. Bell’s expert direction and with Mrs. Scarborough’s patience at the piano, it finally became a mixed chorus that won one rating at state and the approval of everyone it entertained. mixed quartette Gordon Weaver, Aliene Frost, Elaine Kelly, Marion Kelly SEXTETTE Seated: Robin Scarborough, Jane DuBose-alternate, Sandy Howell-Standing: Sara Ann Tallon, Penelope Galloway, Rut h Mims -alternate, Linda Carter -alternate, Roberta Carter, Faye Fields. BLOCK The Block L Club is composed of any sports minded student who has earned a letter in any sport. The active program of the Block L Club enters into many phases of L. H. S. life. The club's biggest function each year is to award a trophy to the member of each team voted most valuable by his team mates. Sock-hop dances after the football games, sponsored by the Block L Club were enjoyed by all. All in all this has been quite a successful year for the Block L Club of L. H. S. 42 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The basketball team has put forth a great effort this year to be one of the best teams that Lamar has ever had. Mr. McIntosh, the coach, has worked hard to teach the girls all the skills of playing basketball and has stressed to them the need of good sportsmanship. We hope that the success of the L. H. S. teams will continue, and we will remain champions through the years. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The '59 basketball season has really been a fighting one for the Silver Foxes. It saw defeat a number of times but showed a definite improvement as the season progressed. The backbone of the team was formed by several returning letter men, but they were sparked by some new starters. As the ELIXIR goes to press, while the majority of games have been lost, the winner has been determined during the last few minutes of plav. I r n n r FOOTBALL ... 1959 With a deliberation unsurpassed, the football team played throughout the season this year. The odds were against them in size and experience, but nevertheless they fought hard each game. Maybe they didn't win them all, but we’re proud of our team just the same because of their never give up spirit and determination. That spirit shone when at the biggest game of the season, homecoming, our boys defeated Bethune two touchdowns for a truimphal ending to the football season.
