For the first time we were now a three-year high school. The effect of this change was felt in various ways. All activities under this new plan ran smoothly from the first day of school. The halls, classes and assemblies were less crowded. Although we recognized the advantages to all, the students felt there was a definite loss in not having a large student body. We missed the fun of initiating the freshmen, and the senior girls always enjoyed their picnic with the fresh- men girls. For us there were many advantages and disadvantages of the new plan, but we were quite sure the freshmen were happy to be in their own new three-year junior high school. This is progress, and the students of Lamar High School are proud to be a part of this progress. It is therefore with great pride that we present to you a record of our new three-year high school in the form of the 1964 CHIEFTAIN. X ri b KE v A ' w W 1. N rf, LH x., K ,, wx W . To insure a sound system, the board decided policy, hired personnel, and fixed the budget. Their decisions were guides that left the execution of specifics to Superintendent Alfred R. Young and his competent staff. A member of the board of education receives little recognition for the many hours spent in planning, We would like to say to all of you who have played a major roll in our school life, a very sincere, Thank you! QHLSS NINETY-NINE SENIORS ONE HUNDRED SIXTY -FOUR IUNIORS ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY SOPHOMORES Pl Q L CG3llfllllOlll'S As the end of the year grew nearer, seniors began to look at LHS from a different view--that of a graduate. We remembered all the things we had done in our four years and realized that they were now only memories. Looking back, it seems such a short time ago when we enrolled as freshmen. Initiation and the Big and Little Sister Picnic were some of our first activities. That year we did our part to help take State in basketball, become District Champs in wrestling and League champs in baseball. Studies were harder, but the fun made up for that. A5 sophomores we Chose our rings and were well represented in all activities. We were represented on the State Champion football team, State Run- ner-up basketball team, District Co-champion wrestling team and State Champion Track team. Then as juniors we all entered into the magazine sales to set a record profit. Our play was S-gr, Beware! Several of us became members of the National Honor Society, Thespians, and Sasi. Our boys were part of the wrestling team which took League and District, and the baseball team and track team, which were State runners-up. We climaxed this year with our prom, Some Enchanted Eve- ning. Our senior year, like the others was exciting. We chose our class flower, the Pom Pom, and motto: It matters not how long we live, but how! We were State runners-up in football and bas- ketball. We broke the State Basketball Tournament scoring record by racking up 108 points in the semi-finals. Our class play was Stranger in the Night. We were honored by the juniors at their prom, Bon Voyage. We had a wonderful time at Star Ranch, appreciating it more because we were to be the last class from LHS to spend a senior trip there. Then came baccalaureate and com- mencement which ended our four years as Lamar High School students. Lynette Brooks, Class Vice-President, Lawrence Brase, President, Jim Flynn, Secretary, and Jean Grauberger, Treasurer hold some of the trophies our class helped to win during our four years in Lamar High School. 20 This page is sponsored by COLE'S PRESCRIPTION PHARMACY RICHARD BOLSER HAROLD BOXLEY QNO Picturej LAWRENCE BRA SE JOHN BRESSLER LYNETTE BROOKS JACK BUXTON ALAN CASE ERNEST ALONZO IANICE APPEL DOROTHY BAUERSACHS MIKE BEAN MARCIA BENBROOK NORMA BENTLEY DELORES DUNN BOB DURHAM DEAN EASTEPP LARRY EBERHARDT ELDON ELARTON HM FLYNN Y 22 Y Fmniors RITA CHAVIRA VICKIE CHAVIRA LARRY COBERLEY JOE BOB COLVIN RICHARD COOK CNO Picturej RUBY DAVIS JANE DOWNING SHARON HIERONYMUS DAPHNE HILL SYLVIA HOLDREN TOM IDLER LARRY JOHNSON PAULA IOHNSON 24 o R CGETIIIIOTS GA RY HA RBE RT SHIRLEY HA RM S KEN HA RRI S MARTHA HEITSCHMIDT LINDA LOU HELTON NANCY HENRY CLAUDIA MCCANLESS MIKE MCCLURE KAREN MCGINNIS IANE MARTINEZ PHILLIS MAUCH VICTOR MILLS fic I964 LIZ IOHNSTON KENNETH JONES MARION KINDER BOB KING LENORA KOEHN ERIC LILIJEBERG RODNEY PREISSER CONNIE PROETT SUSAN QUINN TRUDY RANDLE JERRY RIDER GENE RITCHART o R CBEUUICCDTS TRESSA MOOR MYRA MORAN RON MULBERY MIKE OPALKA ROMA ORR GUY DEAN PLOWMAN WR IIM SPROUT JAN STATLER CORKY STEWARD KENT STRONG CNO Picturej JOHN SUTPHIN TOM THOMPSON PAT TOMBLESON 191614 KATHY RODGERS TOM SANDAVOL KAREN SCHROEDER CLARA SCRANTON DAN SCRIVEN PETE SIPES LESLIE WALKER LYNETTE WARREN RUTH WEIMER PAUL WIDLUND DAVID WILLIAMS A CHIIOIPS ROBERT TROSPER GEORGE VALLEJOS KAY VAN SKIKE KATHLEEN VARGAS LBANNE WACKER I IM WALKER our Active ERNIE ALONZO: Track 15 F. S.F. Howard University 25 Looms School 35 National Merit Semi-Finalist5 Senior Play 1 HHHUTS This year the juniors were faced with new responsibilities, and met them with enthusiasm and efficiency. We elected Sheila Ray, Sue Hill, Carla Clark, and Larry Hartman as our officers. Members of our class took part in every type of activity in school. We sold magazines, al- though our enthusiasm was dampened by the fact that our senior trip was cancelled. After all, our class was the largest ever to become seniors--much too large for a trip. Our play, We're All Guilty was a great success. Five cheerleaders were juniors and our boys participated in all forms of ath- letics. Although the courses are roughest in the junior year, we managed to keep our share of names on the honor rolls. Fourteen members were selected for National Honor Society, and six became members of Senior Seminar after the first semester. Our prom, Bon Voyage, given in honor of the seniors, was enjoyed by our guests, the faculty, and the juniors. This year was brought to a close by the election of student body officers for the coming year. Sheila Ray and Steve Creaghe received the honor of being elected Head Girl and Boy. We hope to make our senior year the finest and most rewarding of the four we have spent in Lamar High School. Linda Sue Fife Our officers represented many elements at Lamar High. Sheila, our efficient president, was a member of the band and a top student. Sue, who was vice-president, was an outstanding art student. Carla, our secretary, represented us well on the honor rolls, and Larry, who was the keeper of our money, was active in sports. This page is sponsored by the VALLEY AGENCY INC. This may have been an advantage in some ways but we still felt we weren't making much headway toward becoming upperclassmen. Holding class offices were Tommy Likes, president: Virginia Eddy, vice-president: and Nicki Bowen, secretary and treasurer. Barbara Brantley held the important office of treasurer of the stu- dent body. Throughout the year many sophomore names appeared regularly on the honor rolls. Among qther honors, sophomore boys worked hard in sports to earn the coveted orange and black letters that they wore with such pride. Among the many exciting events that took place during the year was the choosing of our class ring. And as usual competition was keen for servers forthe prom. We were very honored to be the first class to experience the B. S. C. S. Green Version Biology which is 85070 lab work and 15070 text. And now we enthusiastically look forward to our junior year as we advance one step higher in our goal of obtaining the best education possible. The Savages ended the regular season with a 13 to 5 won-loss record and were sec- ond in the Southern Colorado League with 9 wins and 3 losses. Fine team play and out- standing support from the reserves contributed to the team 's success throughout the year. On their way to a second place finish in the Class AA division of the state tourna- ment, the Savages turned back Mapleton 72 to 61 and set an all time scoring record for the state of Colorado by beating Cheyenne Mountain 108 to 80. The Savages found the going tough against a tall, talented Salida team and lost in a very exciting and excel- lently played ball game. Thus the basketball season drew to a close with Lamar ac- cepting the State Runner-up trophy. The junior varsity this year was coached by Walt Harris. Coach Harris is a strict fundamentalist, and his well drilled junior varsity compiled a 10 to 7 record for the season. The important ingredients of this program are to perfect the fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, and passing, plus the desire to improve, arouse competitive spirit, and hard work. The winning margin came in the last match of the finals between two wrestling giants, Dan Godinez of Lamar and Mike Winant of Mapleton. Winant was a third place winner in State the year before. Dan beat him 4 to 2. Lamar also had its best year at the State Tournament for some time. We ended up thirteenth, which is quite respectable considering the fact that both AA and AAA schools compete together in wrestling. Godinez was again the big point getter, going all the way to the finals before be- ing beaten by Tom Beeson of Denver Lincoln.
