The coming years will bring new faces and changes to our school but there shall be this record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memories that are still dear to us. This year ix over now, but it's spirit will remain with us. IN MEMORIAM SENIOR MEMORIES Esther Ruth Ward ln the fall of 1956 our class of 60 entered Lamar High as Freshmen. lt didn't take long for us to adjust to high school life, The Big and Little Sister picnic for the senior and freshman girls was the first event, Then came our initiation, and the ice was broken, Our basketball team went to state and we all shared the glory when they brought home the second place trophy. The following fall the newness of school had worn thin, and we came back ready to settle down and make a niche for ourselves, In the spring we chose our red and gold class rings and looked forward to wearing them as Juniors, The theme of our Junior year was work, work, work - magazine sales, concessions, our play Anne of Green Gables, and our prom Ne ptune's Gardens ke pt us more than busy, School spirit was high during our Senior year. Football season was climaxed by our semi-final game at Littleton, Our Senior play Nuts in May was really outstanding, Mardi Gras was the theme of the prom - the Juniors did a terrific job and the Seniors agreed it was next to perfect, The traditional Senior trip to Star Ranch was something we will never forget, It was our last time to be together and we made the most of it, With mixed feelings we reached the end of our high school days, We proudly wore our black and white caps and gowns for Baccalaureate and Commencement, Our class motto, We have opened the door, the world lies before us, appropriately expressed our thoughts as we marched up through the audience and bid goodbye to Lamar High School, CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT ,,,, Roger Baker VICE PRESIDENT ..... JU IOR MEMCRIES We chose to lead us during this active year the officers pictured below, Eddy Henry served as treasurer, Marguerite Broyles was secretary, Bella Stumbo carried the responsibility of president, and Bud Krausnick was vice president, We raised money for our junior-senior banquet and prom and our senior trip by working hard on both of the football concessions and the magazine sales, Also our class play, Twelve Angry Women, was a financial success. Jo El Heath and Eddy Henry represented us at the State Student Council meeting at Fort Collins. Many honors came to us this year, Jo El Heath was elected both football and wrestling queen attendant, and her sister, Jan Lee was a wrestling attendant, Monte Midkiff was chosen by the Pep Club as one of the athletic king attendants, Marguerite Broyles was a cheerleader, The student body chose Marguerite and Monte as the two students with the most personality, Sandy Williams was elected a best dancer, Ten juniors were elected to the National Honor Society including Judy Brase, Joe E1 Heath, Nancy Stanfield, Marguerite Broyles, Kay Osborn, Monte Midkiff, Kirt Smith, Gene Hiigel, Mike Steward, and Ed Reish. Kay Osborn, Nancy Stanfield, Bella Stumbo, and Moya Barker were selected to attend Girls' State. Jim Deeter, Gary Ditson, Gene Hiigel, Ray McCall, Kurt Smith, and Monte Midkiff attended Boys' State, On April 9, we honored the seniors with a banquet and prom, the theme of which was Mardi Gras, After a spirited campaign, the student body elected Marguerite Broyles and Monte Midkiff as Head Girl and Head Boy for the coming year, Now we are anxiously, but somewhat regretfully, awaiting our final year at LHS, Bella Stumbo V' W ? By that time we were tardy and that meant a trip to the office for an excuse. It didn't take too long, though, to get into the swing of things, After our formal initiation we felt we really belonged to the LHS family. Sports, clubs, dances - any place the high school crowd gathered, we were there, We elected Danny Randle president of our class. He presided at all class meetings which were always held in the gym, Everyone sat on the floor, but it was fun, Other class officers were Carla Thurow, vice president, Bill Reish, secretary, and Ricky Bryson, treasurer, Castro, Adame, Jessie Adame, Joe Adams, Fran Adams, Ron Alonzo, Ernest Alvarado, Reita Baldwin, Glenda Ball, Karen Batterton, Joyce Batterton, Wayne Beggs, Gerry Bevers, Lonnie Birkby, Alan Bock, Esther Bosley, Mikki Brase, Richard Browning, Robert Brown, Norma Bridge, Randy Bridge, Dinah Broyles, Bill Bryson, Ricky Bundy, Darla Buster, Stephen Ml Buxton, Kenneth Camacho, Jesse Ernest Coberley, Helen Colbert, Jack Colbert, Pat jf if K5 . Report to Room 36! These are familiar phrases to those who work on the Savage Chieftain, Our mimeographed paper is distributed during fourth hour once a month, Much of the news is old but it is a record of the happenings in classes, clubs, and activities of LHS, and there- fore valued by everyone. Gary Routh, art student, designs the front page. The girls in the Office Practice class type and run the stencils, They also assemble and distribute the papers. This year the Chieftain staff sponsored the Eastman High School Photo Exhibit. This exhibit was hung in the library where everyone had a chance to enjoy the excellent pictures. Several members of the staff including Judy Havens, Sandy Dowell, Bella Stumbo, Babette Brown, Karen Moss, and Beverly Walker attended the Journalism Conference in Boulder last fall. Reporters pictured below are Roger Williams, Sandy Dowell, Karen Parsons, Babette Brown, Ruth Jones, Royetta Sublett, and Diane Lavender, THE CHIEFTAIN Last year we tried a fall delivery annual for the first time, While everyone hated to wait that long they did like the complete story ofa year at LHS, so there was no question in the minds of the staff members about the delivery date this year, The books will be distributed the first day of school with an annual signing party that night. The first big job for the staff was selling ads. The girls worked hard and had a very successful campaign, Many hours were spent planning, gathering information, and drawing up the final pages. With the last day of school the final copy was on the way. The staff proudly presents the 1959-60 annual for your approval, We hope in the years to come this book will help you recall this year at Lamar High School. Not much work was getting done here. Bella had found a picture the girls thought was very funny. Pictured are Brenda Brown, Sue Andersen, Marsha Havens, Susan Nye, and Bella Stumbo. Senior girls who worked on the staff were Babette Brown, Janice Hollifield, Maisie Giles, Donna Dillon, and Judy Havens, When the weather became nice the girls often found an excuse to work outside, usually on the fire escape in the sun, This time they were found out in front of the building, ln the next picture they were busy even though Judy appears to be protesting, IJ. s DEBATE The members of the Debate Club pictured with their sponsor are Ray McCall, Bob Ragsdale, Mr, Dan Markwyn, Roger Williams, Tom Kirbey, Joe O'Laughlin, Lyle Rising, Curtis Keith, and Carl Shinn, Under the guidance of Mr, Dan Markwyn, a debate club boasting three active teams was formed at LHS, Through competition with other regional schools, and within the club itself, the members learned the principles of logic in argumentation, and in addition something about the vital, topical issues in- volved in the debate propositions, This year the discussion concerned the pros and cons of increased governmental regulation of labor unions. A good start was made, for not only did the teams participate in the district qualifying meet at Springfield, and a tournament at La Junta, but also a Class B competition was hosted here, CAMERA CLUB These boys all have good cameras and a lively interest in photography. Through the sharing of ideas with each other and their sponsor they hope to develop their hobby. Their services will be valuable to the school and especially the yearbook when they become proficient in taking pictures, The boys pictured here with their sponsor Mr, Bradley, are Joe O'Laughlin, Leland Johnson, and Carl Arrowood, Y in SPANISH LUB Members of the club are Carla Thurow, Flavia Estrada, Bill Rags- dale, Carl Shinn, Mr, Earl Bradley, their sponsor, Leland Johnson, and Maraleta Searl, Habla usted espanol? Their devotion to our teams and the school is unquestionable, Each spring many girls try out for the coveted honor of being a cheerleader for the coming year, The Pep Club selects those who they feel will best uphold the high standards set by the club and the school, These girls work very hard at every game, Theirs is the responsibility of keeping the Pep Club and the student body working every minute, They also are on the alert to see that our school displays the very best in sports- manship at all times, For the first time this year the Pep Club selected a Little Savage to help with the important job of promoting sports- manship, Jennifer Bray was a perfect Little Savage in her black, fringe-trimmed suit, Often she wore a large feather Indian head dress, Her success undoubtedly has started a tradition at LHS and we hope we'll always have a Little Savage. 2+-1 W! The Champion Orange and Black team swept through the league schedule undefeated, In the state playoffs they lost to the excellent Littleton club, a team that went on to win the AA state championship. The Lamar vs La Junta game, billed by many as the game' in Southeastern Colorado, lived up to its advance publicity, Hard gang tackling and sharp blocking were the order of the day. The Savages rose to the occasion and downed the Tigers 27 to 7. Ken Bauer, Don Butler, Jim Diets, Jerry McVey, Rich Nye, Ed Reish, and Delbert Hawk were selected for the all-league first team, Kent Warren, Roger Morris and Homer Strain received an Honor- able Mention in the league, Ken Bauer and Jerry McVey were named to the all-state second team. The Varsity tied for third in a well-balanced league with this brand of basketball. The Varsity Savages were guided throughout the season by the steady play of senior Co-Captains, Jim Diers and Rich- ard Nye. This leadership coupled with the rebounding of sophomore chief ball-getter Home Strain, and the 10070 efforts of sophomores Roger Morris and Moe Vallejos, and with the readiness of the support troops of seniors Roger Baker, Pat Barry, Mike Collins, Dick Venn, and junior Colin Smith, wrote a 9-win, 9-loss record in the regularly scheduled season Glen Hipsher, Junior Varsity Coach, stressed the funda- mentals in his program for the future varsity hopefuls. The boys at this level concentrate on the mechanics of passing, shooting, dribbling, and the intricacies of team play, The coaching duties for the Freshman team were divided by Coaches O'I-Iare and Hipsherg This team played on Saturday mornings and had a separate schedule from the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads, The importance of these two squads cannot be minimized because the future and success of Lamar High School Basketball will eventually rest in their hands. Juror Number Eight, played by Sandy Williams, was the only one who had thought over each possibility and decided that the boy might be innocent. Throughout the play she endeavored to convince the others of the boy's innocence by presenting good points in his behalf, She was violently opposed by the others, especially Juror Number Three even though they could seldom present a good point to back up their blind accusations. ln the end Juror Number Eight won out and the boy went free.
