i The Savage Chieftain Volume 4 Lamar, Colorado, February 3, 1948 Number 5 Annual Senior Formal Features Spanish Theme By MARILYN PEECHER With its theme, Serenade de Siboney, the senior class pre- sented its annual formal dance in the Junior College auditorium, January 24. Forty-seven seniors and guests danced to the music of Alden McKinley of Rocky Ford under a ceiling of festive Spantsh t-olors. The windows were hung with red,' blue. yellow green and orange drapes of crepe paper. Sombrerns. scrapes and typical Spanish decorations Orna- mented the walls. Soft light was provided by floor lamps, The programs featured gay little yarn dclls and carrying out the theme, everything was writ- -en in Spanish. intermission entertainment in- troduced by Master of Ceremon- ies, John McCall included a trom- bone solo by Todd Haveyg a trio. Sibonev. by Margaret Baird. Pam Pollock and Ileta Sterretti a solo LaPaloma by Bob O'Dell, Highlighting the evenings enter- tainment was a Spanish dance by Marilyn Peecher, Jack Eddle- mang Mildred Hendrie, John Hermes: Ileta Sterrett, Sim Hall. Refreshments were served fol- lowing the program. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred R. Young and Mr. and Mrs. Max Coffman served as cha rones. Nineteen students are enrolled, in the driver education class.- This course for which one-fourth. credit is given, is taught after, school by the football coach, John Allen. The course includes thirty- three class hours in the dual-con-I trolled Chevrolet. 24 of which will be observation. Nine periods will be spent in actual driving.1 The requirements allow four stu-, dents in the car at one timef three looking on and the other one driving. No back seat driv- ing, Mr. Allen wams, just ob-' servationf' Of the six week spent in the clasmoom, two wili be spent in learning actual driv- ing technique. Orchestra School To H Music Festival And Au The School of the Ui of Denver has just annoui two-day orchestral Festival Scholarship Auditions to in Denver on' March 6 and 7. In addition to scholarship auditions for each instrument, participants will appear in a festival orchest- ra, a special radio broadcast and attend a special concert by the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Successful contestants will re- ceive free instruction on their ma- jor instruments during the aca- demic year 1948-49 from the first chair players of the Denver Sym- phony Orchestra. The doors are now opened at 8:10 and 12:45. This plan will continue through the cold weather as long as oroper conduct is maintained in the halls. Also the members of the council decided that to carry on tradition. the last dance in the vear will be sponsored by the Student Council in honor of the Senior class of that year. The Council has requested that they be notified of any organization desiring to sponsor an activity. The award of member- ship comes to students who strive to follow these four cardinal principles. Since it is not easy to earn, it is a greatly coveted honor. Its winner wears the pin, which is recognized throughout the nation, with justi- fiable pride and satisfaction. Ileta Faye Sterrett, Marilyn Peecher, Laurice Carlin, Bob O'Dell, Bob Birkby, and Margaret Jane Baird, who were elected during their junior year, presided at the impressive candle light ceremony in which the follow- ing juniors and seniors were honoredg Pamela Pollock, Spencer, McGrath, Marilene Damon, Raymond May, Geraldine Carrillo, Joy Martin, Marian Chenault, Joy Ann Shank, Joyce Bowman, and Bob Sweat.
