TIME: The Elusive Stranger As elusive as the air itself is time. Time is hereg it is now, but it cannot be recaptured nor can it be stored. How is time related to you? Is it your friend? Do you use it wisely? Is it your keeper? Do you constantly watch the clock to see if there is yet time enough to complete your duties so as to be free of responsibilities? Is it your beacon of hope? ls it your enemy? Do you find yourself so dis- organized that you cannot accomplish things worthwhile? Yes, time is all important to every one of us. What is important is how to learn to deal with this mysterious stranger. A few Words Worth heeding: Once time is past, it can never be regained. It is my sincere hope that your time at the Lakin schools has been of great value. Dorr ell George, Superintendent Time is a very appropriate theme for this year's annual. Since time is nebulous, it is impossible to fully realize exactly what it is, why it unceasingly moves forward or why it passes. No man is immune to the affect of its constant passingg no man can alter or change its composition or nature. As a result, this year's annual will always be a constant re- minder of the TIME spent at Lakin High School. I hope that this TIME was beneficial to you and to your associates. It is a part of our life that can never be relived, but the memories will always be a very integral part of us. Daryl Olson, Principal Twila Smith Lee Romig COUNSELOR Guidance is a broad term which is often applied to a total program of activities and ser- vices which attempt to assist pupils in making and carrying out adequate plans which will pro- vide satisfactory accomplishments in life. Guidance should serve youth and their future. Within the context of education, it must deal with the individual and individual decisions. Bill Hicks John Henderson, Jack Campbell, Wallace Kuhlman, F. R. Goodnight, Merl Rider, Harlan Burrows, Richard Brown SCIENCE The general purpose of science is an appreciation of the subject and particularly, scientific investigation through laboratory experimentation. The student must be taught the basic scientific facts which would enable him to become a better informed member of society. The teacher must prepare the student for a successful completion of a college educa- tion leading to a scientific career, and the teacher must try to encourage the student to attempt to pursue scientific careers. Eldon Gilbert Roger Butler MATH EMAT IC S In our technological age, our aim is to offer a program in mathematics that will allow each student to develop mathematically to the maximum of his native ability. Although many students today expect to attend college, our basic curriculum is for the non-college bound as well as for those who will attend col- lege. We believe that our junior and senior mathematics program will prepare a person for college analytic geometry and calculus. Marlin Krehbiel Roger Butler ENGLISH Writing and speaking the English language correctly are invaluable assets to all Ameri- cans. A good command of the language will pay off in self-satisfaction and ability to make ourselves understood. A good English course will help the student to become more proficient in writing and speaking and more interested in reading. Madison Downing Lavonna Martin Ruth Henning FOREIGN LANGUAGE The foreign language department of Lakin High School is headed by Mr. Lawrence Miller. The two languages offered are Spanish and French. These courses are offered for 'those students who plan to make a vocation on lan- guage arts, and also to prepare people for sit- uations in which they might need to communi- cate in another language. SOCIAL SCIENCE World History, American History, and American Government are the courses offered in social science. The purpose of these courses is to help the individual understand die devel- opment of our country and to develop ideas of patriotism. The knowledge gained by these courses plays an important part in our learning to be a good citizen and also in recognizing the responsibilities we have as a citizen of the United States. Bill Sharpe Eddie Cram er BUSINESS Business subjects are taught to students of Lakin High School to enable them to better understand the world in which they live, to give them a background for further study, and to provide useful skills for earning a living. We believe that business subjects are useful for all students regardless of their vocation. Shirley Mc Cormack Ruth Henning INDUSTRIAL ART S The industrial arts teacher at Lakin High is Mr. Verlyn Fisher. Mr. Fisher teaches his stu- dents the fundamental steps in constructing tables, lamps, and other elementary objects. Mr. Fisher helps his students in their construc- tion but tries to let the student work for himself and construct his own material. Verlyn Fisher VO CATIO NAL AGRIC ULTURE Vocational Agriculture gives pre-training to boys who are interested in the agricultural pro- fession. This training includes farm mechan- ics, production and exploratory training in related fields. Dean Hoppas HO ME ECONO MIC S The home economics classes endeavor to prepare the student for future homemaking by establishing guides to good nutrition, meal planning, management of time, energy, and money, selection and construction of clothing, interior decoration, and studies in dating, courtship, marriage, and child care. Charlotte Mueller I. M. C. The library traditionally is concerned with books, newspapers, and magazines. Now such things as film strips, record disks, pictures, micro-film, and transparencies all are becom- ing an important part of what in informational media. In many schools the library is called the Instruction Material Center, which is short ened to I. M. C. Donald MCC oy ART The message of art is not necessarily a simple one or an easy oneg and it is quite le- gitimate that a painting or a statue be mean- ingless to persons at one level of education and yet be clear and explicit to those at another level who are particularly trained to understand it. Harold Waldrum PHYSICAL EDUCATION The mind is only as good as the body. To be healthy a person must be physically fit, which means his body must be able to work at its fullest efficiency. Physical activity in sports provides a release for tensions as well as teaching good sportsmanship. It helps a person to function as an individual as Well as learning to cooperate on a team. These sports give opportunities for practice in leadership, which will extend to social life. Fr ankie Summ ers Eddie Cram er BAND The main point stressed in the instrumental music classes is flexibility and how to use it. In order for a person to be flexible he must be trained in the simple every-day fundamentals of what he is doing. I-larold Waldrum VOCAL MUSIC Singing is probably the oldest form of music art. It is natural to sing. In order to enable students to enjoy vocal music to the fullest, it should be the intent of every vocal instructor to train students that, no matter when or where they sing, they will have developed for themselves a set of habits that will enable them always to sing to the fullest extent of their capabilities. The class writes and edits the school paper, the yearbook, and the Bronc's tale. - Through her teaching of journalism, Mrs. Martin would like to improve the attitude toward the school paper. Through the paper and the yearbook, she hopes to create a better relationship between the school and the community. Lavonna Martin SPEECH Speech is the only universal means of communication. The goal in speech class is to help students to become aware of the importance of good speech, to overcome their inhibitions, to gain self-confidence, and to establish values and principles which will be an asset in any walk of life that they may choose to follow. Madison Downing DRIVEPUS ED UC AT ION In Driver's Education, the text is co- ordinated with the various phases of driv- ing. The students drive on the highway. The classes try to simulate city driving as nearly as possible. In the latter part of the year, the students practice parallel parking. Time is also spent on physical testing by various devices. The youngest girl, tender and passionate, in order to relieve her sisters of the burden of taking care of their blind brother and hence permitting one of them to marry, allows him to drown. When she finds she is regarded as a murderess, she imagines that her brother is still with her and that the terrible occurrence was only a dream.
