Senior pitchers Mike Rudnitsky and Bob Kovachs and junior fastballer Vic Beatty had just begun to loosen their arms, and receivers Paul Benn and Ron Runyon were oiling their gloves. Iron Mike was dead, and Mr. D. was shooting for 40 years. Two new faces, Sy Palo and Dave McKelvey, joined the coaching staff, while old reliables like Barney Griggs and Gary Gunderson were finishing up their high school careers on the diamond. George Brown, Wayne Jupiter, and Greg Lindsey were reformulating their thoughts from winter to spring sports. Questions were being asked about the eligibility of All-State center fielder Billy McCarthy, who was born 28 minutes too late, and newer and younger freshmen were struggling to survive the cut. Spring was coming, and with it a chance to revive the national pastime.
