What part does the Board of Education play in the lives of Lakewood High students? To most of us this board seems rather remote, but actually it has much to do with our school activities. As the policy making group of the Lakewood educational system it is composed of prominent citizens of the community who take a keen interest in young people. Selecting the faculty, taking care of the upkeep of all school property, and providing ad- equate buildings are among the many duties they perform. Their main purpose is to give Lakewood's youth the kind of training and environment that will help them to meet the problems of a post war world. The World at Our Door lecture series, which is sponsored by the board, presents an excellent example of their deep desire to further the education of the community. Indeed they have contributed much to Lakewood's standing. Membus of the Board of Education meet regularly to right are Mr. T. D. Auble, Mrs. H. D. Abernathy, onu 1 month to decide matters of policy and finance Mr. T. F. Maellonald, president, Mr. Clarence C. tomuctul with the Lakewood schools. Only through understanding will the problems of the world be solved, and public education can, if giv- en the chance, play an important part in solving those problems. Such is the belief of Mr. Paul A. Rehmus, superintendent, in an interview with a Cin- ema reporter. Looking into the future, he hopes to see public education broadened and improved. Al- though Lakewood has advanced tremendously in this direction, he believes every school in the country should have a varied curriculum and many extra- curricular activities with an opportunity for students to concentrate in one field of study. Schools should cultivate in students an awareness of the community and a desire to serve it. No one is truly happy, stated the superintendent, unless he is serving oth- ers. Mr. Rehmus himself is a fine example of his own philosophy. His life work is serving others. Page 28 School We ' ' ' nalanf Paul Q Hehmu, Smiling and friendly, Mr. Paul A. Rehmus, superintendent of the Lakewood school system, shows his deep interest by taking part in all high school activities and giv- ing them his whole-hearted support. Mr. S. S. Dickey, assistant superintendent, capably attends to many necessary details.

QA. Umzclcuwn Since coming here in 1941, Dr. Vredevoe has encouraged more student responsibility through self government and has promoted more student activities at Lakewood High. I don't know whether the atomic bomb is the beginning or the end of things, remark- ed Dr. Vredevoe in an interview. If youth learns how to use this power as well as the new political, scientific and economic powers, the atomic bomb can mean progress. Cor- rectly used, these powers will mark the un- folding of a new era, but incorrectly used, they will mark the end of our progress and prestige. Understanding the powers which are ours, scientific, political, and economic, and what a great force they can be for good or evil is the main thing facing youth. Page 30 Assisting Dr. Vredevoe in planning and car- rying out the scho0l's policies are the assist- ant principal, Robert L. Meeks, the Dean of Girls, Miss Lucy Helen Kimball, and the fac- ulty advisory council. Mr. Meeks acts as boys' counselor, and supervises the schedul- ing of classes. The understanding of Miss Kimball and her readiness to help girls and give counsel are appreciated by everyone. She also has the task of supervising Lake- wood's Student Council. The Faculty Advis- ory Council, members of which serve three years, is helpful in planning school affairs.
