Only through understanding will the problems of the world be solved, and public education can, if giv- en the chance, play an important part in solving those problems. Such is the belief of Mr. Paul A. Rehmus, superintendent, in an interview with a Cin- ema reporter. Looking into the future, he hopes to see public education broadened and improved. Al- though Lakewood has advanced tremendously in this direction, he believes every school in the country should have a varied curriculum and many extra- curricular activities with an opportunity for students to concentrate in one field of study. Schools should cultivate in students an awareness of the community and a desire to serve it. No one is truly happy, stated the superintendent, unless he is serving oth- ers. Mr. Rehmus himself is a fine example of his own philosophy. His life work is serving others. Page 28 School We ' ' ' nalanf Paul Q Hehmu, Smiling and friendly, Mr. Paul A. What part does the Board of Education play in the lives of Lakewood High students? To most of us this board seems rather remote, but actually it has much to do with our school activities. As the policy making group of the Lakewood educational system it is composed of prominent citizens of the community who take a keen interest in young people. Selecting the faculty, taking care of the upkeep of all school property, and providing ad- equate buildings are among the many duties they perform. Their main purpose is to give Lakewood's youth the kind of training and environment that will help them to meet the problems of a post war world. The World at Our Door lecture series, which is sponsored by the board, presents an excellent example of their deep desire to further the education of the community. Indeed they have contributed much to Lakewood's standing. Membus of the Board of Education meet regularly to right are Mr. T. D. Auble, Mrs. H. D.
