I To aid the development of natural talent is one of the most gratifying things one can do. To nurture and direct a student of arty to see the blossoming of true abilityg to guide the timid or hesitant pupil into a confident, poised studentg to awaken the appreciation of beauty in a boy or girl: all these are the function of Lakewood High Art Department. The results of the tireless efforts put forth by the faculty of this department give great satisfaction to the pupil, the school, and the community. It must also give much joy to those whose efforts have made our practiced and matured artists possible. True appreciation of beauty can come only from actual contact with objects and portrayals of objects of beauty. Even more diflicult to truly appreciate is the expression of a beautiful sentiment or thought. We all have within us an inherent sense of what is beautiful and what is notg but if our discretionary powers are to be sharpened, they must have the expert guidance of teachers who are truly inter- ested in their subject. To transmit a love of beauty, an en- thusiasm for exact work, and a perception of true values is the constant aim of this department. Left to right! A Woman's Place . l i Left to right-Miss Sing Miss Taylor, Miss Mill Miss Merrills, Miss L Miss Campbell. er, er, Cook, Despite Wars, social and economic revolutions, and political maneuverings, the home remains the most vital insti- tution in our daily lives. The responsibility of managing this primary establishment falls upon the Women of our com- munities. Their duties of maintaining the highest standards of conduct, tolerance, and understanding increases in time in which bigotry, barbarism, and chicanery seem to be the prevailing forces of our World. Just as our home is the fundamental group, so are the subjects taught by this department essential to the care of the home. We must all eat and Wear clothes and live in houses with other people. These primary Wants must be sat- isfied by the Women of our communities. Perhaps more important than the creation of various articles is the attitude which is developed in the student. Here she learns how to adopt herself to changing conditions and how to intelligently meet and solve the problems which will confront her in her role in the community. Page 26 Q. X
