The running of Lakewood High is more closely associ- ated with the technical than with any other department in the school. In the rooms of the Men's Building may be found voca- tional backgrounds in printing, foundry Work, metal shop Work, carpentry, graphing, and specialized engine studies. Civilization is always gauged by progress in these, the indus- trial arts. We Learn By Doing Page 24 that one of the conditions governing the prosperity en-- joyed by any nation is the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which the labor of that country is applied. Therefore our path is clear: in a progressive community we must ever increase our industrial eiiiciency. Lakewood High does its part through its Technical Department. Here one finds that part of American youth which tomorrow is to turn the wheels of industry, studying the problems of that industry, preparing for its task. Here, more than in any other cur- riculum, one finds practical application superceding theoreti- cal knowledge gained from books. Here are the future ma- chinists who will equip our factories, the skilled laborers that will turn out automobiles and airplanes almost beyond our comprehension in their capacities, the ones who in a few years will be supplying the reeds of the defense of America. Much of the mechanical part of the life of Lakewood High is run by students in the technical course. A Woman's Place . l i Left to right-Miss Sing Miss Taylor, Miss Mill Miss Merrills, Miss L Miss Campbell. er, er, Cook, Despite Wars, social and economic revolutions, and political maneuverings, the home remains the most vital insti- tution in our daily lives. The responsibility of managing this primary establishment falls upon the Women of our com- munities. Their duties of maintaining the highest standards of conduct, tolerance, and understanding increases in time in which bigotry, barbarism, and chicanery seem to be the prevailing forces of our World. Just as our home is the fundamental group, so are the subjects taught by this department essential to the care of the home. We must all eat and Wear clothes and live in houses with other people. These primary Wants must be sat- isfied by the Women of our communities. Perhaps more important than the creation of various articles is the attitude which is developed in the student. Here she learns how to adopt herself to changing conditions and how to intelligently meet and solve the problems which will confront her in her role in the community. Page 26 Q. X
