confined to the annals of technical, scientific, and engineer- ing schools and oflices. We no longer have the physical frontier of the westg we still have the challenge of the unknown in science. Industries cannot base their plans on an expanding physical economyg they must plan on an expanding technological economy. The increased efliciency which will result with more precision may be attributed to the undeiiable figures of production, consumption, distribu- tion, and exchange. Our entire industrial system reduced to its lowest terms spells mathematics. Each of us must realize its importance in our indi- vidual lives. Aside from what others' knowledge of mathe- matics has done for us, we must consider the invaluable addition to our thinking and reasoning powers which the logic and precision of this theory can give to us. A study of this subject develops our ability to think in mathematical terms. It is this clear cut, precise logic which will be an asset into whatever field of endeavor we venture. ln the removal of all unnecessary factors, in the discarding of all false roots, in the step by step procedure, and in the indisputably accurate answer may be found the success of the mathema- tician and tomorrow's community. Upon its precision of method, accuracy of logic, infalli- bility of laws, and theoretic knowledge are the other physical sciences based. Their progress can be no greater than mathe- matical knowledge permits. Few of us realize the extent to which we are indebted to the discoveries of our con- temporary mathematicians. The inventor relies directly upon the knowledge of the theorist for his material for the invention of new articles. Bridges, electrical appliances, dams, speedways, and skyscrapers are only the most ostensi- ble results of the practical application of theory. It has been said that one man, Steinmetz, discovered enough laws to keep all the inventors busy for over fifty years. We highly praise those who have the vision to apply impersonal figures into personal servants of our everyday life. We do not, however, give thought to the painstaking effort of the unobtrusive scientist which made these con- veniences possible. Increasingly in industries, a working knowledge of mathematics is essential. No longer can this subject be

We Learn By Doing Page 24 that one of the conditions governing the prosperity en-- joyed by any nation is the skill, dexterity, and judgment with which the labor of that country is applied. Therefore our path is clear: in a progressive community we must ever increase our industrial eiiiciency. Lakewood High does its part through its Technical Department. Here one finds that part of American youth which tomorrow is to turn the wheels of industry, studying the problems of that industry, preparing for its task. Here, more than in any other cur- riculum, one finds practical application superceding theoreti- cal knowledge gained from books. Here are the future ma- chinists who will equip our factories, the skilled laborers that will turn out automobiles and airplanes almost beyond our comprehension in their capacities, the ones who in a few years will be supplying the reeds of the defense of America. Much of the mechanical part of the life of Lakewood High is run by students in the technical course.
