The Commercial Department has assumed much of the responsibility of preparing the students to fulfill their position in the business World as efficient, eager and capable citizens. It has prepared many of its students to step directly into vocations requiring office knowledge and abilityg it has in large measure assumed the responsibility of uninterrupted economic progress through practical, advanced training. ' .fe ' The ever-increasing demand for efficient and well trained office workers has been the impetus for the growth of Lakewood High's Commercial department. In former years, a purely academic curriculum sufficed for the privileged few who could afford attendance in the better secondary schools or colleges. Few positions were open for the trained office worker. These positions were filled by apprentices who had learned their trade from the master craftsmen. As our apprentice system has vanished, there has been a demand for the training essential for skilled business jobs. The metropolitan high school is the logical institution wherein thist raining may be acquired without losing the cultural education necessary for the better balanced individual who will characterize tomorrow's community. The great advantage of the apprentice system was that in

Upon its precision of method, accuracy of logic, infalli- bility of laws, and theoretic knowledge are the other physical sciences based. Their progress can be no greater than mathe- matical knowledge permits. Few of us realize the extent to which we are indebted to the discoveries of our con- temporary mathematicians. The inventor relies directly upon the knowledge of the theorist for his material for the invention of new articles. Bridges, electrical appliances, dams, speedways, and skyscrapers are only the most ostensi- ble results of the practical application of theory. It has been said that one man, Steinmetz, discovered enough laws to keep all the inventors busy for over fifty years. We highly praise those who have the vision to apply impersonal figures into personal servants of our everyday life. We do not, however, give thought to the painstaking effort of the unobtrusive scientist which made these con- veniences possible. Increasingly in industries, a working knowledge of mathematics is essential. No longer can this subject be
