Page 18 Social Studies Correlates the Past with the Future By a thorough knowledge of the past We develop a tolerant understanding of our ever-changing society. A realiza- tion of the interdependence of the entire social structure and an understanding of the relations of the movements and the trends of our history prove a sound basis for good citizen- ship. An awareness of the social problems confronting us is necessary in order that we may see our individual obligation to society and may treat these problems intelligently. In these times when many economists are discussing the proba- bility of a world economic revolution emerging from our expanding industrial system, it is essential, in order to maintain our equilibrium, that we are well grounded in the fundamentals of our present capitalistic system and even more important that We analyze critically the various laws which economics has long regarded as infallible, so that We may clearly see the results of contemporary legislation. The aim of the department is to give the pupils such appreciation and knowledge of this that he may discover for himself the most worthwhile activities in life and may become a compe- tent citizen and worthy member of society, intelligently able to cope with the problems confronting him.
