A Democracy of Thoughts Language is more than simply an instrument for intelli- gent communication with our fellovvmen. Its utility as the primary lever of thought is its greatest contribution to civilization. Civilization is based upon our relations with other humans g language is the concrete expression of ephemeral ideas. The progress of our civilization depends upon the interchange of these ideas which is made possible by the vocal expression of the symbols We consider our lan- guage. Our cultural heritage depends upon the Written rec- ords of our ancestorsg it is upon their permanent recordings of their language that We judge them. Of all the languages English is known to be the most pliable for shaping thoughts into words. Because of its tre- mendous vocabulary, it is also capable of commanding the Lctf to right7Mr. Slater, Mr. Hanna, Miss Miner, Miss Kleinmeyer, Mr. Hutson, Miss Coney, Miss Moore, Miss Beech Miss Monroe, Mr ullcn, Miss Brown, r S aw Miss G C ok, Miss c ' dden .M 1 .. . Z r' akewood High lives on day after day, smoothly organized, never hesitating in its performance of education and preparation, progressing regularly in the vanguard of Amer- ican high schools. And back ol' it all is the Board of Education acting as the link between the community of Lakewood and the school of Lakewood High. The Board, and Superintendent George A. Bowman, have successfully united the two in a tie of mutual dependence. Economically dependent upon the community is the school, and socially centered around the school is the community. The foresight and faithfulness of those pictured below have brought the two into closer con- junction than ever before. To their Board of Education the school and community alike owe a debt of gratitude. Board of Education tlfloi-k-x-sism-it Mr. 'l'. F. lVlcDonalml: Mr. 'l', IJ. Aulmlu: Mr. S. S. One of our greatest heritages is the literature of our Eng- lish language. It is here that all things We hold dear and valuable are preservedg it is here that We will continue to influence the world of action as long as mankind has the desire for progress. The aims of the English department are: to give us a working knowledge of the construction of English grammar so that We may accurately communicate with our fellowmeng to help us attain the Vocabulary essential to clear thinkingg to give up a general knowledge and appreciation of the value of this heritageg and to introduce us to the great masters of literature through their works.
