- - - Une Year at Lakewood who leave the portals of this high school. We as a nation real- ize that however superior we may be, We are not rich enough or strong enough to remain an unprepared citizenry. We in- voke patriotism, sometimes forgetting that patriotism means more than a salute to our flagg more than a blind simple belief that ours is the best country in the worldg different from a readiness to sacrifice our lives. Real patriotism, in peace or in war, is more than these things. It is intelligent, purposeful citizenship. Our Education must develop the disposition as well as the capacity to serve the best interests of society.

Concern over commercial and industrial growth has not characterized our community enterprises. The institution we call public edu- cation is a definite and integral part of the community. We owe a debt to those who have planned these institu- tions so well: we must carry them forward on ever increasing standards of quality.
