It deals with the basic concepts of nursing and introduces them to the nursing process. The clinical experience encourages development of basic nursing skills such as taking blood pressures, temperatures, pulses, and respirations, giving baths, doing range of motion exercises, and taking nursing histories. The second hali of the course, which is entitled The Nursing Process in Health and Illness , includes the study of and the passing of medications. The Nur ing Process fl , W Freshman students must also take several courses at Danville junior College. These include Anatomy and Physiology, Chem istry, Nutrition, Bacteriology, Introduction to Psychology, and Rhetoric. Instructors include Ann Muench, Curtis Huffman, Barbara Poole, Brenda Aden, and Carl Davis. These courses provide a basis for further nursing studies. 2,1 , if tiff lr if ' gl 2 as , The ursing Process And The Individual This course deals with the health problems of gen- eral medical and surgical patients. It has a reputat- ion of being the hardest course in the program. Some of the trials and tribulations include getting the CAADS done on time, studying every waking hour, doing what we students consider busy work, and going for a patient interview. It's also been found however, that this course is often the most rewarding. Knowing your patient is appreciative of everything you do for him, seeing his condition im- prove as a result of your nursing care, and the feel- ing of success after a job well done are three of the greatest rewards. Three of the many musts in this course: Participating in pre and post conferences, charting and Working on nursing care plans, and giving medications correctly, after contemplating the five rights . While several hours are spent working on the floor, many more are spent sitting in class. One tires you by running your legs off getting this and that fO1' yOur patient, while the other tires you because your're trying to write as fast as your instructor talks. Whatever free hours are left, are spent just trying to decide what to do next! . ,.Qf 'fizfi si wg -ee: sg -'-' ff Q15 .-e x.. gi vb Sm .isis - fits? Q 2 0 Q . . . . . It is at this point where students fin- ally realize exactly what they're getting into -- only it's too late to do anything about it! It is made up of three general areas of study. These include critical care nursing, emergency nursing, and the theory of team manage- ment. Such things as learning to read EKGS, learning common adult and pediatric emergencies, and learning bas- ic nursing management skills are taught in the classroom. Students then have a chance to apply this theory as they rotate through various medic al and surgical units, the intensive care unit, and the emergency department. Another interesting aspect of the course is the exposure to the renal dialysis unit. Instructors of the course include Miss Tay- lor flimergency Departmentj, Mrs. Steward flntensive Care, Renal Dialysisj, Miss Ricketts fFour Northj, Mrs. Roth fThree South, j and Mrs. Litwiller fThree Northj. - 1 M' 4: 'SN 'ff X? -sw - fi , . --fs. . ti 11'-jf' . - -saw - iiffigmv' .. .
