The original building was of only one building. The south wing Cstill in useb, known as the Minta Harrison Wing was built in 1915 as a mem- orial from the publisher of the Commercial News. The Title Page of this book shows the original hospital, then known as The Vermilion County Protestant Hospital. It was used initially in 1892 and was located on Fairchild street across from the present Danville High School. Prior to this time it was the Mc- Crone residence. I l This picture shows a hall way as seen in the origin- al hospital as pictured above. The elevator on the left was bought by proceeds from a benefit ball in 1904. Prior to the installation of the eleva- tor, patients had to be carried up the many flights of stairs. This was the old surgical unit of the original hospital as shown in the picture on the opposite page. Later student nurses used this room to assume their re- sponsibility of packaging bandages and gloves for use in surgery. ll The Revolutionary Spirit O Health Care This picture, taken in 1912, was the home of Student Nurses while re- ceiving training at Lake View. It stood at the present site of the School of Nursing annex. i X N xxx. ax ,, Or Warden demonstrates some new equipment in the x-ray Dept. during the 193O's. Doctors yell at them, head nurses criticize them, interns tolerate them, residents overlook them, mothers worry about them, and patients love them. A student nurse is a composite. She eats like a team of hungry interns, and works like the whole nursing staff put together. She has the speed of a gazelle, the strength of an ox, the quickness of a cat, the endurance of a flagpole sitter, the abilities of Flor- ence Nightengale, Linda Richards and Clara Barton all rolled into one. To the head nurse, she has the stability of mush, the fleetness of a snail, the men- tality of a mule and is held together with starch, adhesive tape and strained nerves. To an alumnus, she will never work as hard, carry more trays, make more beds, or scrub on more cases than her predecessors. A student nurse is a wonderful creature: you can criticize her but you can't discour- age her. You can hurt her feelings but you can't make her quit. Might as well admit it, she is your personal representative of the hospital, your living symbol of faith and sympathetic care. She may not be Elizabeth Taylo r, but she is an example of the American way. She is judged not by her race, religion or social standing: She is measured by a professional yardstick that measures her ability to make a bed, apply a bandage, or sacrifice her time to ease the pain of a patient, simply for the satisfaction of a job well done. She is a hard working determined young girl doing her best for her school and hospital. Whenever she becomes discouraged or the lamp gets heavy, she should remember that there is a reward for her, because surely some of God's angels wear white caps instead of halos and carry medicine trays instead of harps. --Unknown, Class of 1947 at l-Iotel Wolfred after Spring Banquet. The new EmergencyfOut- Patient building was open and ready to serve the community on May 17. A open house was held on May 7 for all of the Lakeview employees and the Dedication Ceremony was held on -. May 9. Public tours were conducted on May 16. With the opening of these new facilities and with the increasing trend toward out- patient care, the hospital's name has been changed to Lakeview Medical Center. The New Emergency The concept of the community hospi- - P D p tal is changing, not only in Danville, but e I nationally, from the traditional role of an in-patient facility to the health care center of the community. -- Richard V. For one thing, the patients are smaller than the nurse, for once! The senior class so enjoyed their experiences in Pediatric Nursing that many of them have decided to work there after graduation. Students at LVMH gain experience at both LakeView and at St. Elizabeth hospitals. This helps us to learn more about children in addition to gaining experience at more than one hospital. Yes, even though we have ripped off our caps lots of times and often gone home with cough syrup on our uniforms, we still enjoy our Pediatric Nursing exper- iences. , if +.. ' 1' V' S39 if-2514?
