X i Woman of Vision Look not mournfully into the past, it will not return. Wisely improve the present and go forth to meet the future without fear and with a courageous heart. These, her own words, well describe the life of Mrs. Charline Gry- giel, the director of nurses at Lake View Memorial Hospital and its school of nursing until july of 1971 when she died after an extended illness. Under Mrs. Grygiel's direction, the school of nursing enlarged its educational program and became more liberal in its attitude. Mrs. Grygiel wisely set forth a goal of national accreditation for the school. With her guidance, and after many long hours of hard work, the school received that award only a month before her death. Always she looked to the years ahead, predicting and preparing for the educational needs of her nurses and the health care of those they served. She was a lady with vision, but more importantly, Mrs. Gry- giel was a woman with the conviction and strength to make those visions a reality. 3 :TW fff 'f M: ii -. k,?+, . q we 5 f ff X , 51 x Q f 'M 1 if 5x if 'S 9 w 9 9P Q A-'3 5 4 9 A 5 fi J, A in 1 if Z 1 4 1 Avi V Q2 if f , Y 'K 1 4 -i mf 'Y 3 x Q M ik 5 gh Q 1 X Af Q f N 1 Q . -2 MQ 7 Q 'fm fel alute to Lake iew Physicians Men and women to whom God has given the special talents of car- ing, comforting, and healing--men and women who dedicate these abilities unselfishly to the needs of the people they serve. Mrs. Shernock's affiable personality makes her an individual not to be easily forgotten. Whether she was coaxing a doctor, curing a student, or recruiting help for Dr. Ochoa's cow, Mrs. Shernock was always the same vi- vacious, gregarious personality--whether she be Miss Rebel in Faculty Follies or Mrs. Shernock of 4th floor rear. Q Q' ' ll 28 A 2 E I I The greatest moment in the long history of the Lake View Memorial Hospital School of Nursing arrived on Friday, july 2, 1971. This is when the letter was re- ceived from the National League of Nursing telling of our School's complete, 6-year accreditation. What an accomplishment! Accreditation for a school of nursing is equivalent to the stamp of sterling on silver. How proud I am of our Director, Mrs. Charline Grygiel, her faculty and staff. It took years of hard work, great intelligence and unbelievable perseverance to achieve this ultimate goal. How fortunate we are to have the finest nursing leader in the country right here at Lake View, Mrs. Grygiel. This remarkable lady dreams great dreams and then proceeds to make them come true. With a noble history, with cherished traditions, with devoted community support, our School of Nursing can now advance under the banner of accreditation in a way never before possible. The future has never been brighter. I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who worked so hard to help Mrs. Grygiel lead us to victory. Austin J. Evans Administrator Mr. Rush is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. degreeg and a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. I-Ie has had ex- tensive administrative experience climaxed by a tour at the joint Chief of Staff level of the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. He has also had civilian administrative experience with a local industry. Mr. Rush stated, Lake View Memorial Hospital is my first experience in hospital work, however, I enjoy Lake View very much and feel that the people I associate with are the greatest. I am looking forward to a long stay. Mr. W. M. Rush I I Asst. to Administrator I 1 , I I. This lady has been Mrs. Grygiel's right arm in matters concerning hospital nursing personnel. i , ,,,, , if ' I , H+: Mrs. Miiewski 30 Asst. Director of Nursing ationall ccredited. 19 1 The Lake View Memorial Hospital School of Nursing educational goal has been to be able to provide quality nursing education. We esteem to provide the very best quality of nursing education that we can. And by improving our pro- gram through a very definite plan of steps beg1m three years ago it has proven to be sufficient to meet the criteria as established by National League for Nursing--the highest level of accreditation available to programs leading to a diploma in nursing. An ongoing process of evaluation in our method for continued improvement of our program, aiming to further improve the quality of patient care. Q M, ,.,,,.... am...-n-nun Mrs. Carolyn Bolander Asst. Director of Nursing Education Mr. Larabee graduated from Maumee Valley I-Iospital School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio. I-le received his B.S. degree and master's degree in nursing education from Mary Manse Col- lege and the University of Toledo. This milestone in the history of Lake View launches a new era for both the school and the homital. We should see a greater influx of interest in both institutions. We have dem- onstrated to professional nursing groups, the local community, and the general public that we provide quality care and qual- ity education. The presence of a school with such recognition can only serve to vitalize and improve the quality of care rendered the consumer of nursing services, the patient! 31 Mr. james Larabee Asst. Student nurses do put in long hours of hard study and are constantly searching for new challenges and greater knowledge as individuals and nursing students. But they are young men and women who enjoy getting the most out of livingg and who work diligently to help those persons who have physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual problems and illnesses to regain their health as much as possibleg and to use what poten- tials these persons have to get the most out of life. However, these are just two of the many activities of a hospital and the nurse. Unfolding, in the next few pages, one can see the much broader spectrum of nursing--the integration of basic nursing sciences to the complexity of nursing specialities. i V. --X .Q ,ff ,MW , wx' x I , Q., A xx -3 ' vi 4 fmswsxiszxffwwx K mfs 4 , f f Mm x WW Nw-W Z 2 W? Affiliating at jacksonville State Mental Hospital is one of the most fulfilling experiences in the nursing education of LAIGE VIEW stu- dents. After moving to the newly erected dormitory and finding new friends in the students from the affiliating schools, this year's juniors and seniors spent the remaining eight weeks discovering themselves and others while studying and gaining an understanding of the nature of human behavior. Insiruction, both clinical and classroom, is unique on the Jacksonville affiliation. Dramatized television case studies provide exciting, more meaningful education whereas the meetings and talks with an assigned patient provide opportunity for actual performance of the video theory. Outpatient clinics, the adolescent center, long cafeteria lines, the aides, team conferences, decorated bulletin boards, card games, and ward parties finish the description of this center for human actualiza- tion--a place where each student, at the end of her two months has gained a new knowledge irreplaceable to her goal of total nursing care. 67 ,,- :of-,li Y Q ul SX X Danville Junior College 1. b , li N MI MR. Chorus The Lakeview Chorus, one of Mrs, C'rygiel's fondest dreams, has helped to put Lakeview Memorial Hospital School of Nursing on the map . Besides performing at Capping, Graduation, Christmas, Spring Concert, and community functions, the chorus has performed as far away as Peoria, Illinois, as invited guests of the Maternal and Child Health Convention. We feel confident that under the direction of Mrs. Shirley Stude- baker, the chorus will continue to progress. tk 5 'ill l I ANN CRIBLEZ--OUR CI-IAPLAIN The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Swansbro, M.D Editofs ote Aw .ef X's.., We, the PARAGON staff, and the nursing students would like to give a big vote of thanks to all the de- partments of Lakeview Memorial Hospital. Without their generous cooperation, the yearbook would not have been possible . All the staff members will agree that working on the yearbook has been a challenging experience. We have attended yearbook and photography workshops and learned many new strange terms: layouts, crop- ping, ffstops, and shutter speeds. We have worked hard but have had lots of fun, hoping to put out a book that does justice to the school and captures many precious moments for the students.
