Finally! That’s what most of this year's seniors were saying. When May 19th rolled around, we were very excited. Finally facing the time of when we were leaving. Leaving our friends to start something. To prove to ourselves, and the ones around us, that we can make something of ourselves and of our lives. But what lies ahead? You make that decision. Will you continue on with school? Will you get a job? Or will you get married? Some will move out of state, and we may never see them until our class reunion. But whatever the case may be, we will be separated in some way or another, from one another. Here at Lakeview High School, we have been taught general knowledge. But some people took advantage of what the school had to offer in extra classes, such as computers, speech and drama, wood shop, newspaper, foreign language, and yearbook, just to name a few. Some people took classes that will help them later in their career. Some just took what will get them by. Some got out of school earlier in the day to work at their job. It’s a time of many decisions. Do I get a job? Do I go to college? Do I go to a trade school? But whatever you decide, you're doing what fits you best! So as Casey Kasen would say, Keep your feet on the ground and keep reachin for the star!” TOP RIGHT, Bob Case. Steve Pallas and Mrs. Slusarski are sentenced to behind bars during a studyhall. There is a lot of things that have to be accom- plished. Here is what a few juniors had to say about the year they had. Theresa Tribble said she really enjoyed this year, because there is just one more year left, then she can pursue a modeling career in Dallas, Texas. She also said she was glad juniors got to decorate for Prom. Vicki Osten said her junior year was a learning experience. She said she had a lot of work to do throughout the year, but the outcome will be a big benefit for her. She can't wait to pursue her career. Leo Kosch was glad he was a junior, because he could finally be in the speech and Drama class. Where as before he had to be in the junior division. He was glad to finally be able to participate in fun class activities. Jim Saalfeld commented that it was the hardest year that he ever had, but he is sure it is worth it. He says after all those American History tests with Mr. Strunk, he will be ready for anything in college. Among everything else the class placed second in the Homecoming decorating competition, and third in the Christmas decorating competition. The sophomore year is usually the year when you are finally accepted into high school life. School now seems to be easier. The big dream that is looked forward to is getting those class rings, but they have to wait a long time in order to finally get them, but the wait is worth it. The sophomores placed fourth in the Homecoming decorating competition and in the Christmas decorating competition they finished first. The sophomore class experienced a busy but fun filled year. They realized that you have to work together as a team, in order to get important things accomplished. Remembering the times when you couldn't get those lockers open, and panicing, thinking that you were going to be late for your next class. How about those times when you were scared to walk past the pit, the fear of being initiated. The Freshman class learned this year, that in order to get something accomplished you have to work together as a team and looked forward to the dream of becoming a Sophomore. This year's Freshman class of 87” knew what they had to do as a class. They were very ambitious and hardworking, when it came to decorating. The class finished third in the Homecoming decorating competition, and second in the Christmas decorating competition. Football-49 Snowflakes Of Celebration On a cold snowy night on the 23rd of September, the Vikings approached their home field hoping to defeat the Central City Bisons. During halftime, the activities for the night were: the Homecoming candidates walked out to the middle of the football field, waiting patiently to find out who would be the Homecoming King and Queen. When the time came the new King and Queen for 1983 were Russ Sindelar and Judy Henke. The rest of the game was exciting to see the Vikings trying their hardest, but the game ended with a Viking loss of 13-8. After the game everyone went to the dance floor and danced away the loss of the game and was looking forward to a fun night ahead of them. Wonder where everybody went? Hey, isn't that the finish line up there. What’s Mr. Whiting doing? He's yelling at me! What? He’s telling me to run harder. Hurry, only 50 more yards to go. Wow, I made it! I can’t believe it. Mr. Whiting is telling me I broke a school record. What a way to end a race. Even though I didn’t get a first place medal, I broke a school record. They are the girls that stand in the freezing cold, trying to raise the crowd’s spirits when the game is a lost cause. They are the one's who make the commitment to be at all games, home and away. And they are the girls who create the pep rallies that get everyone ready for that next big game. Being a cheerleader requires patience, time and money. The girls buy their own outfits and provide their own transporta- tion to all the games. On To State A season of excellence. This year, the girls varsity team did just that, excelled. They worked to give us one of the most memorable seasons we have ever had. After defeating Scotus in first round Districts, they were well on the way to a victory well worth remembering. They advanced to second round Districts and defeated Hartington Cedar Catholic in the best game of the season. Pierce was the only thing left standing between Districts and State. After beating them to become District Champions, the girls were off to Lincoln for state tournaments. It was a goal, an accomplishment. It took high spirits and hard work on the part of the girls, but they achieved it. It was truly a season of excellence. This year the girls Jun- ior Varsity achieved an 8-7 record by working together as a team and using the skills taught by Coach Gertsch. The Fresh- man team got their first taste of Lakeview basket- ball with an 7-4 record. They found out what its like to work together and play high school basket- ball, while gaining skills that will help make next year’s J.V. team even better. Working hard and playing as a team helped the guys to gain experience while struggling to over- come difficulties. There were four returning players to the varsity team; Jim Specht and Brian Kuta, Seniors! Joel Smejkal, Juniori and Keith Gehring, Sophomore. Joining the team this year were Brian Souillere, Jeff Inselman, Kevin Tuma, Scott Walling- ford, Brad Asche, Wade Behlen, Scott Smejkal, and Dave Brakenhoff. The hard work, near victories, and constant improvement that went on between the players and their new coach was sometimes over- looked by a 2-17 season record. The season was a frustrating one for all involved as there were only four returning varsity players, but the desire to practice and win made the going a little easier. Boys Basketball-67 This is the story of Basketball Bart. He was the leading basketball for the 1983-84 Lakeview Boy's basketball season. As might be expected. Bart was bounced through a lot. He led the Junior Varsity to a 4-10 record. Although the boys had a tough season Bart helped them learn new techniques for a more successful season next year. However, Bart found the Freshmen easier to work with. He was able to give them the boost they needed for a 10-5 season. Bart really helped the players the best way he knew how. But some days Bart didn't like being himself. He got in certain kinds of spells where he didn’t like to go through the hoop. The players realized that you have to work together as a team in order to get things accomplished. Bart did his best to help them out and he gave them the enthusiasm to make next year’s season a hit. Lisa and Jeanne exhibited the pride, dedication and spirit it takes to lead a wrestling team through a tough season and proved that hard work makes good cheerleaders. Wrestling-73 Snowball Dreams Come True Have you ever dreamed of becoming royalty, wearing a crown, or dancing with the prince or princess of your dreams? If you have, then your dream may have come true on the night of December 23rd. It was a night made for crowning a new King and Queen, for appointing attendants and for dancing until midnight. Jim Specht and Kelli Krings were announced as the Snowball King and Queen with Reva Went, Rob Neater, Sue Meyer, Brad Asche, Rhonda Borchers, Wade Behlen. Jenni Meyer, and Brian Foral as attendants. The students that attended the festivities danced to the tune of Complete Music” and admired the decorations done by the Seniors. All and all three meets were never able to be made up. All of these being duals was a lose that hurt the team because of experience that could have been gained. The teams overall perfor- mance went very well. In addition to their regular routine they took on some fund raising events to raise money for their new eye-catching sweat suits. These all-weather sweat suits will be a Columbia blue in color with silver lettering across the back spelling out LAKEVIEW. Silver and white stripes will line the sides of the sweat pants. To pay for these a total of $420. dollars was raised. The track members held car wash and a big wheel race. Despite the rescheduling of many duals due to bad weather, the golf team finished out the season with a 2 and 2 record. The short season hurt the younger, inexperienced members of the team who were just beginning to develop their competitive form. Since spring forgot to come, many practices were held in Lakeview's hallways instead of the Elks Country Club. Ed Kinzer and Mark Shelby took part in coaching the boys to a very rewarding season. Each year, when it comes time to sign up for next year’s classes, there are always some people who want to take some- thing easy or who have a period to fill up. Some of these people often decide to be an aide. At the time they sign up, they think it will be a pretty simple class period, but, they soon find out differently. Being an aide involves typing, correcting papers, or just doing the general running around for a teacher. It can often be a difficult or tiring job, but their help is always ap- preciated. One of these not so rare occasions is when sheep shearing season comes along. It’s hard to keep clean because we get in rather close contact when the sheep are held in sheering positions. This quickly passes though and sometimes I feel like I have fleas but then I realize it’s from the sheep sheering season. Another thing I dread is being tossed to the back of the van. This ride can be hot and very uncomfortable. The sewing on the emblems is a very sensitive time in my life. I have to learn to endure pain. When the needle pierces my corduroy I could all but scream out in dire pain. The members, according to rules, are required to be very particular about my wear. Members' girlfriends are not permitted to wear me. While wearing me, the members are expected to act like respectable ladies and gentlemen. This is the new name given to replace the previous L-Club. The change was made because it was thought more appropriate. Lakeview wants to keep the group united to represent the athletes of LHS and promote more spirit. This year the club constitu- tion was tightened. It is now stated that an athlete must be active in at least one sport this year to be a member. Next year the dues will increase from $1.00 to $3.00. One of the activities of the varsity club was to put on the traditional grade school tour- nament. The Varsity Club sold concessions and t-shirts for money raising activities. The profits were very pleasing and will go toward a good cause. 75% of these profits will go toward the school’s athletic department. This money will be appreciated by all of the various athletic organizations in Lakeview High School. The remaining 25% of the profits will go towards a field trip. The members, with the sponsors approval will choose where they would like to go. Should I Join? What does it mean to be a member of Varsity Club? Being a member of Varsity Club is an honor. It means that you’ve given your best at a certain sport. It means that you’ve worked hard to get what you want. It means that you’ve reached your goal. It means that you've participat- ed on a varsity team and met the requirements to receive a letter. And most of all. it shows that you are a devoted athlete and represent LHS with pride. 118-Varsity Club TOP RIGHT - Adam Edwards takes a break while selling concessions. We once followed, now we lead.” The words echoed in our heads as we marched to the familiar beat of Pomp and Circumstance. It was the moment we had all waited for. The time when we would say good-bye to our childhood and look to the future. As we took our seats, the memories of the past four years came flooding back-, the dances, the games, time spent with friends, the rowdy times and the sad times. We remembered them all. It was hard to describe the emotion we felt as each of us received our diplomas. It was a mixture of happiness for what we had to look forward to, and of sadness for what we had to leave behind. Whatever each of us was thinking though, there was always the knowledge that we were all going our separate ways and were about to encounter the biggest challenge of our livesi choosing a path to follow. As the ceremony ended, and we marched down the aisle for the last time, we realized that after following for so many years, we were finally ready to lead others as we had been lead and look towards the future with open-mindedness, at the opportunities it offers and at the challenges we must conquer. It was published by the Walsworth Company of Marceline Missouri. Our Representa- tives were Greg Adams and Mike Diffenderfer, both of Lincoln. The theme of Vol. XIV Lakeview Viking wants you to remember these years fondly, the joyous times and the disappointments. But also look ahead to the years to come. Lakeview had some problems this year with the football team and with spirit. But had just as many highs with speech and Girls' basketball. Crosscountry, golf, track and volleyball did their part in supporting LHS. I hope this book has helped you to remember the days at Lakeview and use them as a learning experience. Good luck with your future and Go for your dreams. Gina Mueller Editor Team Members Adviser - Sandra Coke Team I Mary Lutjelusche - Captain. Ads Theresa Tribble - Ads Sherri Swanson - Typist. Index.
