We at Lakeview feel we can get an excellent education, if we try! For some reason, we feel, once we get to school it's time to fool around. But in this case, we have never been so wrong. Our lives educa- tion comes from these four years of diligent working. With the three years of English, two and a half years of Math, two years of Science, two and a half years of Social , Studies, one half year of Typing, and one year of Physical Education, we are able to walk out of | this school knowing we have the capability to earn the 200 credits required for graduating. It's already 8:30. Darn! Overslept again! That gives me exactly six minutes to take a shower, three to get dressed, two to comb my hair and brush my teeth, and five to eat breakfast. On the other hand, skip breakfast, I've already wasted three minutes just thinking about it. Let's see, that leaves exactly nine mintues to get to school and two to get to class on time. Drats! Late again! I just missed it by one minute too. Maybe they'll let me off easy this time. Great! Just in time for announcements. Goulash again? Yuk! At least I'll have some extra time to study for that semester test during lunch. Terrific! Another L-Club meeting after school and early practice. That gives me about fifteen minutes to go home and grab a bite to eat before choir practice. My stomach is already growling. Maybe they'll sell concessions at the freshmen basketball game tonight. Oh no! was suppose to sell concessions tonight! Maybe I can help clean up. Guess I'll have to skip the homework tonight. I can always work on it in the morning ... if I don't oversleep (again)! 21 Kaylene Gehring Sue Harkness Todd Hassebrook Trace Hassebrook Dan Hellbusch Shelly Henke Lisa Hennessy Corrie Hughes John Jaixen 22-SENIOR CLASS Sandy Jaixen Jo Jan James Lenny Janssen Steve Jarecki Keith Jedlicka Kevin Jedlicka Kris Kluck Bill Kodad Lisa Korte SENIOR CLASS-23 Top Right, Phil Wemhoff asks help from above to pass English. One of the favorite pastimes of every senior was sitting in the pit. Sitting in the pit was the one thing they could do without doing anything. The pit gave the girls a place to gossip and get caught up with the latest rumors. It gave the guys a chance to practice their wrestling abilities and eye that pretty girl sitting on the other side. Although it was off limits to underclass- men, Freshmen were often found singing or committing strange acts in the pit during lunch, especially when both Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Kamm were gone for the day. The pit also served as a quiet place to study during classes and somewhere to go after being kicked out of the library. SENIORS-29 Mike Remm Sandy Rickert Rob Sander Ryan Sander Dave Schreiber Kent Schumacher John Siefken Michelle Sprunk Lisa Thomazin 30-SENIOR CLASS One of the advantages of being a senior, as the 1983 graduating class discovered, is being looked up to by the underclassmen. Four long years can get you a little respect! Another advantage is getting out of school early. Although it appears that seniors spend their last year just counting the days until graduation, 97% of the class would undoubtedly say they had learned just as much or more their last year than any one of their previous years of high school. Reaching out to end their last year at LHS, the class of 1983 found it was no ordinary year. It proved to be an exciting year full of special events. Special activities of almost every senior's year included: chosing candidates for Homecoming, Snowball and Sweetheart, trading senior pictures, visiting colleges, participating in last high school competition, voting on graduation announ- cements, ordering senior keys, attending last Prom, and making plans for after graduation. The seniors, as well as the rest of the school, welcomed a new student; Tomas Matre. Tomas, more commonly known as Tom, is a foreign exchange student from Norway. Tom lived with the Harmon family during his stay in the United States. He participated in Wrestling, FBLA, Swing Choir, Stage Band, and served as president of the band. As sponsors of Snowball, the senior class decorated and provided refreshments for the dance. The seniors also showed their support by paying five dollar dues toward the colored pictures in the yearbook. Hook a Victory was the Homecoming theme for the senior hallway. The seniors received fourth place in class competition. They also received ten dollars for third place in Christmas window decoration competition. Their theme was Have a Smurf of a Christmas. Our today's and yesterday's are the blocks with which we build our future proved to be an appropriate class motto for the seniors. Maroon and cream were chosen as class colors and roses and baby's breath were class flowers. Class sponsors, Mr. Barnes and Mr. Cruick- shank, aided the seniors in chosing the suitable size caps and gowns and in making final plans for the big day. When graduation day finally arrived, the seniors proudly switched their tassels. Some showed tears of joy while others showed tears of sadness. Although the seniors have all gone their separate ways, they will always reach out and remember their days at Lakeview High. Top Right, Senior class officers: Kent Schmacher. Vice-President. If you were to ask a junior here at Lakeview, just what it is like to be a junior, you would find mixed emotions on the subject. Some students may tell you that it's great to be a junior because of the fact that they only have one year left to go, and then you find those who say, that in a way, it is sad to be a junior because they know they are nearing the end of their high school years and will miss the fun and excitement of Lakeview. There are no mixed emotions when the question is asked “What kind of experience is the junior year? to a junior. A probable 60 out of the 67 students will say it was a busy, but fun filled year. During the course of the year, the juniors placed first in the Homecoming hallway competition and ranked second among their competitors in the Christmas window decoration contest. As juniors it is a tradition that they be the ones who give the “farewell gift to the departing senior class, this gift being the best prom possible from the class effort. The class worked hard on this project throughout the year, beginning with the magazine sales clear through until the last streamer was hung with hopes that it would be the best prom ever. It was then the juniors prepared themselves for the responsibility of being the reigning senior class of 84. One way of explaining it might be to put yourself in a middle child's position, you have the juniors and seniors ahead of you who have all those privileges you just can't wait to have, and the freshmen below you who can get away with the things that you're suppose to know better about since you're older now. As sophomores, students find that they are given more freedom with their schedules than they were given as freshmen, giving them the chance to pick classes which will aid their career goals in the future. One requirement which every sophomore contributes to is the decorating of graduation, no if's, and's, or but's about it! This year the sophomore class decorated for the graduation ceremony with great taste which appealed to everyone. An exciting part of the sophomore year is the selecting of the class ring, along with that, probably goes one of the harder parts of the year... waiting for the rings to arrive. As a class, the sophomores placed 4th in the Christmas window decorating contest and second in the Homecoming hallway competition, among many other happenings and achievements which contributed to a successful year. Looking back on your freshmen year, you reminisce moments that you've stored in the old memory bank throughout the year, and suddenly they seem as if they are happening all over again. Like the time those hot shot seniors made you sit in the pit and sing We love you seniors until you were blue in the face, or the time at the first dance of the year you finally got up the guts to ask cutie to dance and made a fool of yourself by stepping on her toes. Actually, the freshmen year is not as dreadful as many incoming ninth graders fear it is. In fact, it can be quite exciting and rewarding as the 1982-83 freshmen class experienced. Capturing first place in the Christmas window decorating contest and placing third in the Homecoming hallway competition reward- ed the freshmen with a feeling of accomplish- ment and showed they could do just as well and better than their upperclassmen. An exciting tradition which the class took on was the decorating and planning of the Sweetheart dance, which was a complete success. Retiring queen Anita Long, crowned the new reigning Homecoming queen Diana Asay, and retiring king Jay Rodehorst, crowned Doug Means as Diana's king. Following the Lakeview-Crete game was the Homecoming dance where Diana and Doug along with their court were honored. A disc jockey out of Kearney, got the dance rolling at 10:00 sharp and kept those who attended up and dancing into the night. February 12, was a special night here at Lakeview for all the school's Romeo's and Juliet's, this was the date set aside for the annual Sweet- heart dance. The lights were turned low and soft music played in the background as the 1982-83 Sweetheart King-Tom Matre, and Queen-Gwen Franzen were announced amid their court: Neal Dreifurst, Robin Elsasser, Lenny Janssen, Shawn Warnke, Duane Lusche. and Lisa Korte. The freshmen class decorat- ed the dance area with a Valentine theme, and supplied the students with refreshments throughout the dance. Even though it's the '80's, many girls are not ready to join the liberators and ask the guys out. The Twirp dance gave these girls their chance. Each girl had her chance to ask the guy she'd been eyeing all year. If she didn't take advantage of making a date before the dance, there were plenty of single prospects when she got there. Twirp was once again spon- sored by the student council who also provided refreshments. Music was provided by Sound Unlimited. 56-TWIRP Top Right, Ryan Sander gives the Senior response. Prom is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as a formal dance held for a high-school or college class . But how would you define a Lakeview Prom? Unfortunately, this definition can not be found in the dictionary! A Lakeview Prom could be defined as a formal dance for Lakeview students and their dates, but is that all it is? It would surely be better defined as the biggest night of the junior-senior year! This special night was held April 30, 1983. Sailing to Brighter Tomorrows was selected as Prom theme by the junior class. This was highlighted by nautical decorations portraying a ship. Guests were greeted by Captain Rich Neater and a Steward Suzan Hassebrook. The ship featured lounge chairs and a silver chandelier centered over the middle of the dance floor. I spent the past year playing for the mighty Lakevlew Vikings and that was one tough job! Our season record was 3-6 over-all. The season started off on September 3 in our territory. Albion defeated us 6-14. Our second rival was Scotus. Unfortunately, the score in their favor was 8-13. Boy! Was that game ever rough on my shins! On September 17 we made our first whooping victory over Ord with a final score of 0-40. I took quite a few flying leaps that might! We came back for our second win on September 24. The final score of the Central City game was 20-15. On the rainy night of Homecom- ing we came face to face with Crete. The score in their favor was 6-12. By the end of that game I was drenched from end to end! On October 8 we packed our duffle bags and traveled to York for a 12-9 victory. The next two weeks I would rather forget as we were defeated with a score of 0-21 to Seward and 0-14 to Schuyler. But we enthusiastic Vikings never gave up! We triumphantly left the field with a 14-0 victory over Fairbury for our last game on October 29. As I finally retire from my position as head football, I can trully say that I will always look back with a smile on my lace as I reach out and remember all of those terrific games I played with the mighty Lakeview Vikings! 113 Cross Country Activates '83 The Cross Country Team had another busy year as always. The Vikings put on a good show for the crowd during the holiday tour- neys at Platte College, conquer- ing the green team 41-39, but the real crowd pleaser took place during a regular season game, when our Vikings rocked the Shamrocks through 3 overtimes and came out on top 70-60. Capturing honors for their playing abilities on the court were Jeff Muhle achieving All- Conf. and Paul Wilke along with Doug Means obtaining Honor- able Mention. The team's excellent playing skills and substantial season record was their ticket to the district playoffs in Norfolk, where the players roared through first round action beating, Wayne 64-46. Pam, Karlene, Denise, Barb, and Michelle as they step up to become varsity performers! 14 freshman girls along with first year coach Charolette Shaw put together an outstanding record of seven wins and only one loss. The young team showed a great deal of enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Each player worked hard in practice and gave 110% at game time. Many of the girls were called upon to play with the J.V. squad. This gave them the motivation and experience that improved each individual as a player. Jeff (Fr) 44. 64. 66.67. 81 149 Reach Out And Remember! Another year has gone by, but to Lakeview students 1982-83 was not just another year, it was their year. Their year to challenge, to compete, and to reach out and strive for the best! To win together, for better and for worse. Togetherness helped to promote school spirit. Students working together in athletics, extracurricular activities, and even classroom work helped the year breeze by smoothly. Freshmen got a taste of what their next three years will bring, sophomores learned the ropes of becoming upper- classmen, juniors finally made it to the top, and seniors got to look back on all the years and try to do something with what they had learned. Of course there were the usual events and all of the joys and sorrows they bring. These golden moments never to be forgotten. Volleyball and football marked the beginning. Cross country followed close behind. Basketball came in and went out with style. Wrestling proved to be rewarding, even sent one to state. The cheerleaders along with the pep club kept everyone going with pep rallies and class competition. Speech, Drama, and Band as well as Vocal and Dance kept everyone entertained throughout the year. Golf came on the scene in early spring, and finally the tracksters did their part to bring the year to an end. The victories, the disappointments, they were all packed into this one year that all Lakeview students will want to reach out and touch someday. It was a special year, it wasn't just any year, it was their year.
