THE PIONEERING SPIRIT CDF i958 Every generatioin has its p oneers. The covered wagon pioneers of a couple of generations ago, search- ing for new land, rnore riches, and better places in .-.lngr tg make their horves, ne,er even visoned the 'one eagle Wght of Chanes A. Linebergh through 'ne ai' across uncharted seas to the old world. Travel to C1lSl6t1l places used to be about the ory kind of pioneering done Today the world not onli. travels fast and far, but its pioneers delve deep in'o the secrets of the eartn and sky 'n their effor's to cring greater blessings 'o ncntaiwity. So many t7elds of exp oration are open today that 'here are more pioneers in a single state 'han there used to be in entire nations. One can sit almost any evenirg by his radio or tele- vision set now, and listen to sone pioneer in astrono- rny or outer space tell of the exp orations he is making on some star that is hundreds of ight years away from us. or of the movement of some satellite that is encir- cling the earth. A fe.-v moments later some other pi- oneer in another field of science nay explain to us how the electrons of an atom behave. The danger which youth faces today is that it is so easy for you to witness the modern pioneer and his achievements without any effort on your part. We must not forget that it is up to each of us to keep pace with the onward march of the pioneers of the ages in bring- ing increasingly more and more blessings to humanity in every field of knowledge and experience. Only by accepting cheerfully our share of responsi- bility for world progress, and in carrying on in spite of difficulties and discouragements, can we merit a place among those who have lived creatively. We wish for each graduate of l958 that you may be truly pioneers of this age, in both attitude and action, H, B. Ferrin lllllVllNlSTl3lllTlllN Left tc riglwtg Mr. H. B.
