Highlights included winning the Thun- derbird tournament at Edsel Ford High School in Det- roit and becoming District co-champions. They also placed second at Kellogg Community College, fourth at Ann Arbor Huron, and fifth at the Battle Creek Cen- tral tournaments. Each member won at least two indi- vidual trophies. Bruce Sholes and lim Tompert trav- eled to Boston and Pittsburgh for nation-wide tournaments. Mr. Lynn Wallace advised the debate team, while student teacher Steve Smith helped out. Forensics activities were centered in Miss Ellen Har- vey's acting class. Students performed such things as monologues, multiple readings, public speaking and acting, One-aCt plays and short readings. Freshman are still required to take a full year of Freshman English. The only change in this year's curriculum was the addition of a New Testament and English Lit course. According to Mr. Glenn Lawrence, depart- ment head, the only changes that can be seen for next year are putting more importance on phase one of this program by working more with the student who has some difficulty in his reading. All of the courses which received a good res- ponse this year are again being planned for next year. ul t ' E-, Above: 4 down . . . 8 to go. The new ovens and ranges for the home economics depart- ment and new automotive equipment from the Ford Motor Company were among acquisitions. The wood shop acquired a new duplicating mach- ine. Mr. Sam jennings, wood shop teacher, said that this would eliminate the guess and gosh method. New textbooks were also purchased for the first time in many years, he said. The improve- ments will help motivate students to do more creative work, Mr. Jennings predicts. The home economics department included units on nutrition and health foods but with updated facts and preparations. iff:-'32 Above: Home arts boys get together and sample some really gourmet cooking. ' 56 Communications Enrich Curriculum The elective areas of foreign language and speech contributed greatly to the students' enrichment in the form of communication. Speech and drama classes strived to encour- age the student in all forms of verbal and body communication. Speeches and plays were produced on an individual and gre- garious base in both speech and drama classes. Preparation and encouragement were put towards forensic contests and the all school musical, South Pacific. The foreign language classes, French, Latin, and Spanish, aided students on to a broader scope of verbal and written communication. These courses studied foreign culture as well. Miss Ellen Harvey remained the main dramat- ics instructor as Mr. Wallace led forensics. Counselor, Mr. Deane Harsha, retained the position as head of the foreign language de- partment. i it Upper right: Miss Ellen Harvey presents Teri Haggstrom with a first place award for her reading in a school forensic contest. Such skills as painting, sculpture, and drawings were displayed. We have a lot of talented art stu- dents, said Mr. Richard Lovell, a member of the art fair committee and journalism teacher. We feel these students should be given an opportunity to display their abilities to the community. Working with Mr. Lovell were Mr. Hal Wurl, art department chairman, and Mr. jerry Mackey, art teacher. Increased enrollment resulted in the division of the freshman choir. It met two hours a day and the mixed choir was dropped. The Band had an excellent year in both concert and marching seasons, but a lack of funds limited the pur- chase of some new instruments. Various field trips enriched the students' back- ground. American Government students saw justice in action as they visited the area courts. Certain economics students were able to journey to Lan- sing's Aircade. Department head Harold Chase's classes were given the chance this year to break away from the usual rules and regulations through the formation of their own constitution. Success was achieved only in the fifth hour. Their constitution was named Chase and later changed to Chase and Brophy upon the arrival of the student teacher, Miss Lynn Brophy. Mock elections sponsored by this department were held in March. ..... 1 A ' C A . ith, . do Upper left: Lawyer Bryan Dandenault tells about his role as City Attorney to Chase's fourth hour government. L.. 61 New Math Program To Start Next Fall A new math curriculum will go into effect beginning the fall of 1972, said Mr. Larry Laughlin, Math Depart- ment chairman. The program is very similar to the new English one, he said. We will offer separate se- mester courses to give the student a greater selection of mathematics to choose from. It will be a five year program beginning with four prin- ciples of math semesters along with the present pro- gram and eventually changing to a total of seventeen different math semesters. The new math curriculum accelerates students so that eighth graders will begin algebra and students will finish the present math pro- gram by the end of their junior year. This leaves room for independent study. Mrs. Sheryl Stevens returned to the math depart- ment after a one year leave of absence. Left: Mr. Hepler explains a polynomial. Science Seminar, basically designed for seniors, is a comprehensive review of previously studied math and science. It is divided into three phases, the first being a combined math and physics taught by Mr. Larry Laughlin and Mr. Dickman Kausrud. The se- cond phase takes in chemistry. This is instructed by Mr. Deland Davis. Biology is the third phase, taught by Mr. Norman Rubel. Photography is solely instructed by Mr. Richard Colburn. lt deals in the actual exposure and devel- opment of film. Both of these are semester courses which are de- signed to enrich the student's background. Another addition to the science department this year was Mr. Ed Drew. Mr. Drew taught general science and spearheaded a drive for a new interde- partmental ecology course. ,.......-.- ,,.. . Al J., V7 i l, E, W 'll U1 95 N V53 V71 Ez. 'DUS- 3rr Ibm crm QE. How- ever it has only been presented, said Mrs. Colburn. Despite a lack of funds and space, the library at- tempted to rejuvenate its facilities. New lighting and audio-visual equipment were among the improvements. Mr. Volpe, special education director, taught basic subjects such as math and English. Being able to pick from a certain class list every five weeks offered greater variety and increased the students' en- joyment of their classes. Freshmen through seniors were mixed in the same classes. No longer was any student kept from taking an advanced class just because he had never taken a beginners class at Lakeview. An example of this was that freshmen were able to take lifesaving if they could meet the requirements. Heading the men's Physical Education Department was Mr. Gary Beard. Other instructors were Mr. Bill Brandell, Mr. Ron Lynch, Mr. jim Ritter, and Mr. Buzz McNally. Mrs. Delores Hepler led the women's Physical Educa- tion Department. The other two teachers in this area were Mrs. ludy Case and Mrs. Terri Rozen. Modern dance was a favorite among girls physical education. 1972 Honor Rolls Largest in LHS History Top: Senior Alpha Honor Roll. Abov I Iph R ll Below: Sophomore Alpha Honor Roll. Later in the school year they sponsored a roller skating party at Skateland in which quite a few stu- dents took part. Not only was this a money making project but it also provided a night of fun for those who participated. During Homecoming Week, freshmen showed a lot of spirit and enthusiasm throughout the week by helping with building the float, decorating one wall in the cafeteria and by participating in the Field Day events. In the tug-of-war event the Freshmen boys won over the sophomore boys. Possible future plans for money raising projects in- clude such ideas as a bake sale. The class is advised by Mr. Raymond Perry. They were Mr. Earl Seaver, Mr. Don Garratt, and Mr. Calvin Hunter. Mr. Hunter replaced Mr. Richard Brown in the middle of the school year. No changes were made in the Administration Staff of Superintendent Lloyd C. TeSelle, Assistant Superin- tendent Karl Randels, Director of Special Services Da- vid Brophy, and Curriculum Director Dr. Carl Pacacha. The Administration initiated the protection of the pipes around the high school and replacement of the boilers in some of the older schools. Discipline Central's loss was Lakeview's gain, stated Mrs. H.K. Green, librarian at Battle Creek Central, when asked about the loss of Mr. Al Leibert. Mr. Leibert was with the Battle Creek school system for 18 years. He was appointed as assistant principal on August 16th, after the resignation of Mr. Walter johnson, who requested a transfer to a counseling department. Other than the replacement with Mr. Leibert, the front office remained the same. Mr. T.N. Thomas remained as principal and Mr. Ouellette finished his second year as assistant principal in charge of student activities. According to Guidance Director Mr. Robert Harvey, Counselors experienced an increased interest lo- cally in vocational education, due to the increased interest in the state toward career education. This year the counselors aided over 150 students in obtaining training at the Area Vocational Center. The counselors also visited the center more this year in order to learn more about program op- portunity and to see how the students were doing. Above: Guidance office secretary, Mrs. Helen Solomon.
