The Log .... 1958 To the parents .... whose understanding has guided us through our youth into adulthood. We always say thanks for the car, thanks for money. thanks for gifts .... but in dedicating this Log, we offer appreciation for the thousands of intangibles. Thanks for being our moms and dads and just being near when we need you, Graduation. Alune -ith, means for the seniors. the accomplishment of a thirteen-year milestone. May your conhdence and faith in us strengthen as we assume those duties of leadership that you. our parents. have so ably performed. -fr? i 8 To the students .... who attended Lakeview this year . . . . to each of you: the crowded or the lonely. the adjusted or the confused. As you walked these halls or passed through these doors. day after day. week after week, a history of your future was being made. Our castles will be built: some will crumble .... but right now. at present, we can look back and benefit from this years experiences. This yearbook is dedicated to you. because it tells Your Story' of the wonderful and fulfilling year of l957 - 58. To the community '.... whose loyal support in everything from athletic events to school elections has been appreclated. America has many small communities with small high schools. but we are especially glad that the indi- viduals and families who live in Lakevieu' settled in this particular spot on the big map. ln dedicating this book, we say congratulations on progress so far, and know that even more progress will be evident in the future. Administration . . 1918 We are the administrators whose guidance and teaching affects not only the education of our youth but their lives as well. We began this school year ambitious for scholastic, physical, and social development for each student. We planned for each one according to his talents, abilities, and interests. To ,the sophomores, we proposed plans for study, curriculum changes, advice, homework, and social adjustment. To the juniors, we gave encouragement, added responsibility, and stressed the need for outstanding scholastic achievement toward the ever-important senior year. Before the seniors, we placed opportunities for thewacquisition of basic skills and the development of vocational competencies for college, business, and community life. Throughmethodsandprooeduregweattemptedtogiveallstudents experiences in the 'operation of democratic principles and an awareness of responsibility for democratic ideals. Zfmw Students .... 19j8 We are the students who, in the colorful and crisp autumn, returned to Ll-LS. to begin a new year. As we looked upon the year from that first day, we set our sights on a bright beginning for friendships, a better education, a successful football season, and new experiences. The days grew colder, the hard winds started to blow, trips to the Administration Building seemed tougher and tougher. Homecoming introduced the first snow fall, and the winter winds were here to stay. Thanksgiving found us thankful for the great school we attended .... wishes that had been fulfilled . . . . that world crises were easier . . . . that we are in America and free to have our thanks . As students, we looked for jobs over the Christmas holidays .... and shopped and partied and skated .... on cold winter evenings studied in cozy living rooms, unmindful of the harsh north winds. At the start of the New Year, we found ourselves blinking and wondering .... wondering where in the world that half year had gone. It was gone, though, so we picked up and plunged into a second semester with vows to may harder. The rrhrrey Gang rehearsed and produced Turn Right , while the basketball team looked forward to new victories. The days grew longer, the universe more cluttered with Fxplorers and jupiters. Victories for all came and went. Time flew! Being students and in our youth, Spring hit us like the flu epidemic. Colors once again mingled around our building .... breezes blew .... flowers bloomed. To seniors, farewellg to 'good luck . Here they found oppor- tunity for club participation, individual responsibility, and the selection of courses which would prepare them for their future. During the basketball season, class members operated the concession stand for all home games. The annual Hard Times' Day, held in the spring was organized by the sophomores, and fun was had by all who participated. The outlook is promising for this group which has shown continued interest in self-development, and much spirit in school activities. H Sophomore officers for the year were: Thom Martin, presidentg Rolly Frantz, vice-presidentg Karen Malli- - son, secretary: and Carolyn Birdsong, treasurer. Igffl' We are the athletes who, in the summer of '57, thought of the football season, the cold air, and the new formation, working hard for a championship team. We have now, nothing but memories .... of lighting against someone bigger, someone smaller, someone faster, someone slower .... of a snowy Homecoming. As these events turned into memories, some of us found ourselves at basketball practice .... once again looking forward instead of backward. We thought then of the packed gym with lots of noise to cheer us on into The Come-Back Team of the Year . It proved to be a hot and cold season with victories to make us sing and losses to make us silent. By the end of the tournaments, Spring was upon us and we had a varied number of sports to capture our enthusiasm .... baseball, golf, track, and tennis. We' made our decisions .... then once again prepared. We heard the crack of the bat for homeruns .... we made long drives .... we broke records inthe440....'andweacedopponens. The switch from the old punt-wing to the T-formation had its dithculties. It was by trial and error. at the teams expense, that errors were eliminated. The first T.V. conference game provid- ed Lakeview with a victory over Sturgis. The seasons high point occurred when the Spartans out-played the then-rated number one Class B team in the state, Albion. Spartan victory was positive with a hu- miliating 27-7 score. Climaxing the season was the annual Homecoming game. A last minute vic- tory was captured by East Lansing in a driving blizzard. Statistics showed Lake- view with a 3 win - 5 loss record. Special tribute was paid Coach Colburn, who, while in need of an immediate oper- ation, showed his sincere Spartan spirit in coaching the team throughout the entire season.
