From the football field to their annual band concert, the high school band, under the direc- tion ot Iohn Masteller, excels all others, in Lakeview's opinion. The school is proud of the fine work and honors that band members have won this year at ensemble, solo and group festivals. They appreciate the way in which the band helped to make our pep assemblies very entertaining and lively. The band participated in both the Kalamazoo district and the Olivet mass festivals, bringing back top honors for Lakeview. In April, Chuck Aurand, Paul Orr and the sax quartet jour- neyed to Lansing to compete in the all-state contest. Mr. Snedecker, the quest conductor for the band concert this winter, entertained the group in May with his East Gary, Indiana, band. This concert was very enjoyable. In the spring, two musical organizations joined in a Pop Con- cert which proved to be one of the highlights of the year, featuring classical and popular music. GERMAN BAND: Standing, E. Longman, D. The club consists of fifty enthusiastic members and is under the capable direction of Mrs. Ioyce Seymour and Mrs. Iean Lower. College iight songs were quite the thing at the beginning of the year. In unison the boys sang their hearts out and the effect was lusty, impressive, and gratifying. From that phase of music they gradually developed into negro spirituals such as In the Evening by the Moon- light. By Thanksgiving the club had worked Boys' Glee Club out Grandma's Thanksgiving. They sang with the Girls' Glee Club at the Thanksgiving Assembly and were received very well by the students. Other favorites throughout the year were Strike Up the Band, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Hallelujah, and Ballad for Americans. Musical entertainment was provided a num- ber of times by the Glee Club at assemblies and pep meetings. Their participation in the combination band and chorus Pop Concert helped make it the triumph that it was. I14l

Upon seeking the source you found that this was the Lakeview High School Girls' Glee Club, in which there are sixty members. They might have been rehearsing for one of their many yearly assemblies, the May Festival in Kalamazoo, or the mood-making Pop Concert in which the mixed chorus and band partici- pated, featuring both classical and popular music. As a branch of the glee club the Girls' Octet has been a popular group. At noon the halls were often filled with the melodies of Star- dust, Make Believe, Winter Wonderland, l.et's Take an Old-Fashioned Walk. The Octet has sung for assemblies, exchange assemblies, and has had many outside appearances. Girls' Glee Club-- l6I
